Tom, my Northern neighbour, step away from the forest, you're losing sight of the trees...or have you been doing Quality Control work again, LOL.

Of course we can't use an Alaska slab, we're not in Alaska, we're down South here, where frost is a seasonal problem, not a PERMANENT fixture. The freeze thaw cycle would wreck anything bridging slab to ground, ie. electrical, water, and septic connections, not a good situation for a permanent residence. As for permanent residences on piers, the same problem occurs, how do you get freeze sensitive pipes and such from the ground up to the house and back?

A resort operator at a golf course/resort I did some work on a couple of years back had a unique concept for re-programming the learned behaviour of problem bears. He had a CO2 paint-ball competiton gun, the kind that fires gelled 'paint' (actually a vegetable dyed gelatin mixture) capsules, using syringes he carefully topped the capsules up with a blend of Cayenne Pepper and Capsasian (?, the active ingredient in the Pepper spray the police use). When fired towards the bears they thought they were getting a handout, however it seems the bears din't find his projectile hors-d'oeuvres very appetizing at all, in fact he claimed to have a very low rate of repeat diners.

Good point about counter-rotation of the differential. True enough that if the tractor is sliding, then there's already virtually no traction so brakes aren't much good for stopping. Brakes might keep a tractor from turning and side rolling though. I understand that's actually more common than getting a wild ride all the way to the bottom.

Doug: I was joking about my own freezer used for garbage. The idea is that if it has undisturbed garbage in it, then is it actually bear proof, or aren't there any bears visiting? Yes, it's a freezer in the woods, but when it's working can you hear it? This is sort of like the cat riddle of some months back. Maybe if I do enough quality control this'll start making sense, but I am happy the freezer with a fridge thermostat does the job.

Mark: Those would be brown bears while ours are black ones and junior cousins. Still any bear is really strong. One came in (or maybe fell in) through the roof at a friend's camp. It came out through a bedroom wall and an exterior wall. Bears don't bother with doors and 2x4's are no problem.

Actually there's no question that we've got both visiting and resident bears at our house as well as camp. Most are normal bears that run away when you yell at them. Increasingly 'dump' bears don't run. Yes, we've got bears--both running and non-running. The non-running ones probably are courtesy of our wildlife officials who have a charming practice of relocating 'problem-bears' from more populated areas to our backyards.

Mark: I posted my explanation in the other hitch thread. To Murf's comment, I'll add that draft control has two levers. One adjusts the sensitivity of the lift to changes in draft. Decreasing the sensitivity means that it takes heavier drafts to trigger the lift. <br>

The sensitivity to draft can virtually be taken out of the mechanism and then the hitch sort of works like position control. Full up on the draft lever raises the hitch for transport. In draft control the hitch flops when there is no draft (you can't stop in draft control).<br>

The other lever is the position control, but it controls how high the hitch can go rather than how low like in position control. The position control is used so that draft control can't pull a plow clear out of the ground.<br>

In terms of a hitch raising in increments, I don't think anybody is very successful at 'feathering' them. It's just not the nature of the beast. That’s why I virtually never touch the 3ph when I grade with a box blade--3ph movements just aren't precise enough and the timing is usually off as well. I control action of the box almost entirely with a hydraulic top-link. I mentioned something I called a 'centre-neutral' hitch in another thread. I've never used one, but just maybe they feather better than position control hitches. Since in the other thread I said I’ve never plowed with a moldboard, here I’ll say that I’ve never used draft control. Some experience huh?<br>

I'll take a guess that load and draft control is the same thing--afterall draft is a kind of load. If not, I sure am interested in what it is.<br>

I used to think that the main thing about draft control was that it'd raise the lift if a hard spot was hit when plowing. I do remember my cousin ‘panic grabbing’ a lever on an IH tractor when the traction failed in order to keep the tractor from digging itself into the field (in the '50's the lever may not have been for a hydraulic lift however). Draft control does that automatically.<br>

After reading a bunch of stuff here, I realized that draft control did a bunch more than lifting over hard spots. At first I thought it maintained constant depth. Well, I guess it does that as long as soil conditions are constant. It really maintains constant draft, which is only approximately the same as constant depth.<br>

What somebody like me (who never was good enough so my uncles would let me plow their fields) might miss is that when a tractor starts up a hill with a plow, the hitch floats upward and then the tractor and plow are on different slopes. When the plow first starts up the hill, it sort of buries itself in the bottom of the hill. In effect, it goes deeper, which increases the draft and the hitch raises it. The same thing in reverse happens at the top and the hitch lowers so you keep plowing rather than pull the plow out of the ground for a few feet. Of course, if a tractor in draft control stops then there’s no draft and the hitch flops down on the ground—not exactly great for finish mowing.<br>

Having said all this, it's important to note that I still have never plowed a field. Of course, many working farmers today don't own moldboard plows I hear, so maybe I just sort of stumbled into modern times.<br>

Glad to help. I imagine that owner's manuals are available from New Holland, and that would be a good thing to obtain. The manual gives basic maintenance routines, tire load charts and all the basic info needed to keep the tractor running well. <br>

If the 20-series injector pumps aren't self-bleeding, that will be an upcoming challenge unless you have a description of the procedure. If you grease the tractor, most zircs are obvious but 4wd tractors have a pivot point at the middle of the front axle. However, most owners’ manuals don't say much about cold-weather starting, changing the coolant every 2 years, checking wheel lugs, loader frames etc for tightness and a bunch of other stuff. You can find out about that stuff by reading and asking questions here. It’s also a good idea to read about safety issues.<br>

Owners' manuals also don't say much about repairs. Repair manuals are available from NH and parts manuals also are useful because they give very detailed exploded parts drawings.<br>

My PS is gone. A new box is a grand!!!! Does anyone know what the adjustment screw does at the botom of the power steering unit....mine is frozen. It looks like the first place to start.

That is the going price in my area for a new 4100 plus FEL and maybe a post hole digger. Other than the plain jane simplicity of the 790, the other selling point is (like the 4100) it is a purely Japanese product. The only drawdack to the design that I have heard about are the dry brakes. Check some recent posts for details, but that would not be enough to scare me off of one.

I seriously considering building a steel framed house. I really like the Heritage brand out of Arkansas. They seem to have a well thought out and engineered package. Has anyone had any experience in erecting one of these? And secondly, does anyone know of a crew in the Houston area that will erect them. I can finish it, just dont know anything about red-iron erection. Thanks

Guess what? It wasn't the fuel cap. After months of trying to work with this dealer I finally got fed up and went to another dealer. The tractor dyno tested at 17 hp at the pto. The valves were adjusted a little too tight, readjustment gained a couple of hp. Turns out the return fuel rail was installed upside down (twice at the first dealer!). When it was installed correctly the tractor put out 29.5 hp at the pto. Finally the power is where I remember it. The first dealer thought I was nuts. I had to pay the second dealer $260 for his effort which the first dealer said he would reimburse but I'm still waiting.

About all you can do is try to improve traction. Tire chains and
weights help but it is still only 2 wheel drive. The Onans always start
unless the battery is low or there is water or dirt in the fuel.
I dont know of a pre heater for this engine. If you have the unit in
a garage and have any type of heat at all it will always start. They
are not warm weather only engines. The only units that would not start
for me were the diesels, and only if the battery got low. If we put
a jumper on they would always start.

I have a L3410 HST w/ an LA482 loader that I have attached a Meyers ST-90 power angle blade to. The blade is mounted on a pallet fork attachment that replaces the bucket.
The power angle is controlled w/ the remote valve and lift is controled by lifting the loader arms.
Advantages: Cheap;The used blade cost less than $200.00, Fast to move snow and allows stacking of banks by lifting the loader arms; easy to hook up
Disadvantages: The tractor/blade combo is long; It's hard to get the blade height right so the blade trips correctly;he tractor is light enough in the front end to be pushed around by the blade;if you don't have a remote valve you need to manually tilt the blade or rig up the electric pump to do it.

I have a 95 D1105E engine. It started banging like somebody has a sledge inside Saturday. It is loudes in line with the crankshafte where the mower deck couples so I figure I probably have a bad main bearing. I need to get it rebuilt or replaced. Any suggestions other than $3400 for a new engine? Short blocks around? Replacement manufacturer without such a captive network of non-competitive dealers? Chevy 350 for $500 ; )

Let me know. I can drive or ship it if I have too.

I just purchased a L3010HST after MUCH research. From reading, talking to owners, dealers and finally, operated as many machines as I could, I came up with the following:

My opinion: there are few bad choices. I wanted a hydrostatic transmission and that ruled out Kioti and Massey F. That left New Holland, JD and Kubota. I found fewer users in my area with service problems (the dealer matters a lot) among Kubota users. I like a lot of little things better w/Kubota than JD. Fewer electronics to potentially fail, more substantial loader, metal rather than fiberglass construction and slicker 3 pt hitch to name a few.

That said, I've friends who love their JDs. I almost bought one.You'll regret neither when you're sitting on top.

It makes sense that the 4210 HST would be a little sluggish on hills. It weighs 1100 pounds more than the 4100 Gear and only has 3 more useable horsepower.
