J Green - From what I know of auction prices around here (SW Wisconsin): JD1020 gas = $4800 +/- $800; JD48 loader with 6' bucket = $1900 +/- $400 ... both items depending on condition and how badly a guy wants the equipment. As always, things seem to be going high when you're thinking of buying and low when you're thinking of selling.

Mike, thanks for the insight. I realize what you are saying. I doubt seriously if I will ever use this tractor for more than mowing. I will never use the 70hp available. I am just so tired of the vibration,noise and underpower I seem to experience with most air cooled engines.
The project is well under way. The subaru engine is now being modified. I have developed a way to make the one inch shafts for the Lovejoy connector to the pump and for the PTO. It looks like I will need to raise the pump up off the platform to align with the center of crank on the Subaru. The biggest problem I see now is the exhaust. They exit the heads right about where the tires are. Ill figure out something! The Subaru engine was from and 86 car with tons of pollution devices that need to be blocked and plugged so that is taking lots of time also. I plan on pulling the Briggs in a couple of days and doing the first "fit check".
I did consider a new Briggs 18hp engine before starting this project. It would have cost about $1000.00. This project so far has cost about $75.00. Of course I am not counting labor, Im cheap!!

Got my new MX5 delivered this weekend. I have some fields that haven't been touched in years. Drove through stuff that was well over my head and came out the other side without a problem. I read a lot on this board before buying and the info I got really helped in making the right choice. Rounded cutting edge shatters the saplings so will not have to worry about them breaking through tires in the future. Thanks to all that help us rookies out with their questions.

I wouldn't want to try using the loader as a parking brake if the tractor is still moving. It is amazing how fast a tractor can flip over and planting the bucket will try to stop the machine faster than gravity, momentum & inertia wants it to. Likely result, a tractor on it's side, probably after a few revolutions in the air, and hopefully with the operator anywhere but underneath it. At least rolling fast down the hill offers a chance at deciding the resting position when the ride finishes. I watched a skid steer do this a few years ago on a golf course we were building, it must have rolled end-over-end a dozen times before it came to rest beside a pond, if the tumble had started 50' farther over the machine would have ended up in the drink. Not a good idea. Best of luck.

There is another type of 3ph control that I'll call 'centre neutral.' Push down to lower and pull up to lift. I think the 3ph moves faster the further the lever is pulled. I also believe that in neutral, the 3ph floats upward like a position control hitch. Such a hitch might actually be more useful to many owners who don't do much fieldwork. The main advantage of position control is that most quadrant levers have sliding locks, and the lock can be set for a particular position. That way, plows and other implements can be lifted off the ground for transport or turn-around and then pushing the lever down to the lock will return the hitch to its same position.

My Ford engine will sometimes lug down if I'm going into a pile and lifting the bucket at the same time. The engine RPM will usually come back up and the bucket lift if I push in the clutch. Trying to run both the hydraulics and the wheels at the same time takes more power than the engine delivers.

There is a lot of weight to lift if a bucket is put into a pile of gravel near the bottom. I usually go in near the top of a pile even if I have to drive part way up. If the pile is too big, I'll drag some down from the top. I usually go slowly into a pile with the bucket fairly level. I start rolling the bucket back when it's in the pile and then start lifting the bucket out of the pile. There are some tricks that minimize the hydraulic power needed to work gravel piles. A loader that's well matched to the tractor shouldn't over-power the hydraulics.

Basement block is porous. You definately need a good french drain and make sure the drain will not plug with silt.
I placed flush side pipes on my drain so that I can flush the french drain. I also place the drain cloth over the pipe in the drain rock.
A block wall is only strong in the vertical direction. Hydraulic (water pressure) can crack the wall, if high, even if you seal it.
The skim coat seals the wall and provides a little strength in the horizontal direction.
The other option is to place a layer of foam over the block and then seal the top of the foam. There are two options here sheet foam or the urethane spray foam. The application of the spray foam has a urethane water proofing top coat.
I don't know about the Dow Styro foam systems I believe they seal the wall under neath and the apply then bond the foam on the top for increased water resistance.

If the 20-series is similar to the 10-series: the engine oil dipstick is on the right side below the engine oil filter. The TX/hydraulic oil dipstick is on a 'thumb-screw' under the seat on the top-left side of the TX case. The front axle dipstick (if 4wd) is on top of the right axle housing. Take care to use diesel rated engine oil and acceptable TX/HYD oil. There are bunches of good tips and info in the archives for brand new tractor owners.

Thanks. I always enjoy reading a good technical analysis. The other analysis used the idea of a 'triangular plane of support.' The points were the rear tires on the ground and the front pivot point. In this context, the tractor's CG can shift forwards or backwards and left or right depending on operating conditions. Operating conditions become critical if the CG moves outside the support triangle.

These analyses probably are similar in practical terms and both are interesting to think about. I'm not sure how far an axle can pivot before it hits the stops. Maybe not far since I have had on front tire off the ground when a rear wheel went up one hill and the opposite front wheel went up another. They do pivot enough so the axles have to be blocked when splitting a tractor.

There was an interesting wrinkle in the previous discussion. The idea was that the front support for a tricycle gear is nearly a point similar to a pivoting axle but it's a ground level. The support for a pivoting front axle is above ground level, which tilts the triangle up and increases stability.

In terms of things practical, thanks for the comment about brakes and traction. From habit I tend to use the diff lock, but I know that hitting the brakes on the side that a rear wheel is spinning often can pull a tractor out of the mire. Also in practical terms, I like the idea of SS. If I had it, I’d probably use the tractor rather than a riding mower for about 2-acres of lawn. There’s just too much landscaping and buildings to maneuver around and too much trimming left to use the tractor for mowing.

Pushing out with a loader or pulling out with a backhoe could be added to the list of ways to get a tractor unstuck. Tractors do get stuck. I wasn't aware that skid-steers get stuck easier, but I guess I can see it. I guess they steer by actually digging in. I believe that occasional needs to drive over a lawn discourages many people from getting skid-steers.

I don't know the brand. The numbers could belong to the manufacturer, or they may be B&H's. Contact info is on their site, listed below. If you don't want to buy without seeing them with your own eyes, they could likely tell you who made them. I would expect any decent tractor shop to stock them. You could also check with a place that sells or rents backhoes...............chim<br>

Yes. I ordered one. Your dealer in SoCal (did I mention I grew up on the banks on the Santa Ana River?) was not to thrilled when I called, and has not returned my call. But after jumping around a bit and some arm twisting and some crying over lost profits, my local dealer came around and agreed to a reasonable price. I got a price of 15.6k in Portland (2 long days round trip) but I figured it would cost $7-$800(trailer rental, food, lodging, gas, etc) to get it home. The local dealer agreed to $16,600 including sales tax. That was a no brainer. Now I just gotta figure out if my slightly spreading 6'3" frame is gonna fit ok on it.

You are not going to hurt the hydraulics with tire chains. If they become loose they will catch on something. With the strength of a hydrostatic drive something will break. It wont be the drive system. It will probably be a fender or something like that. We put them on lots of 220/230's.

Onans dont need much choke. Some engines have a provision for turning the choke partially off automaticaly. The Onans do not. It is like a choke on an old car. You have to know when enough becomes too much. If the engine doesnt start in a few turns I turn the choke all the way off. This usually clears out the excess fuel.

Well, embarrasingly, it seems the problem was solved very easily.
On a whim, while contemplating how to tackle the problem of taking the control valve apart and taking the spool valve out, I checked the oil level in the hydralic system. It was half way between the full mark and the end of the dipstick. Fully within the normal range. But, I went ahead and filled it to the full mark.
Lo and behold, everything begin to work. I could park it with the implement raised and it would hold it up even when I turned the tractor off.
So, before I did anything, I hooked the mower up and took it for a spin. Worked like a charm. Just like it was supposed to. So, I have backed off on fixing anything else until I have a littl confab w the JD Dealer and walk through the repair manual trouble shooting section.
Sometimes the obvious is what you need to check first.
