i bought my first compact in 1985,a 1210 ford.used it hard for 1500 hours and decided it was time to trade.there was a prblem with the ford dealer on the trade so i deciced to give kubota a try,big mistake.in the 300 hours i had the orange nightmare i replced the brakes twice, axle seals once, and had the cases split to fix a noise that never could be found.traded back to the true blue and in 700 hours its been back to fix the mid mount pto seal.good luck

I am looking at a JD 455 and the BX2200, each has features that I like. Has anyone heard of a cruise control for the BX2200? What kind of tiller is available for the JD execpt for their own? Does anyone have an idea of the used price for a JD 318 with 590 hrs, a 46" deck, bagger and a mulching kit, 3 PT hitch, front blade would be?

The front axle fix went into production over a year ago on the 4300 and 4400 tractors because my 4400 was manufactured in March, 2000 and has the new axle. By the way, this front axle setup performs extremely well. Obviously when Deere engineers had to fix the previous one they weren't going to cut any corners second time around. The front tires turn very tight with no scuffing in 2WD and barely perceptible in 4WD on sand even at full lock, better than any 4WD I've seen before. The loosening wheel bolts on the left side seems to be a widely varying situation according to reports on this board: some tractors it happens repeatedly, some only until tightened once or twice, and on some (like mine) it never happens even once.

Followup: My dealer just got back to me and JD is going to warranty the wheel. It is on the way from the factory now. Dealer told me to go ahead and put loc-tite on the bolts. Just NOT the "have to heat to get off" stuff. Thanks all for the responses.

I think most 'kill' levers/knobs on diesels built in recent memory use a very simple system, far less complicated even than de-compression. The 'kill' mechanism merely opens a small valve in the injection pump and causes the pump to 'dump' the fuel directly back to the return line, and into the tank. No fuel, no run. The reason this system is preferable to de-compression is it leaves the injectors 'unloaded', that is to say there is no residual fuel pressure bearing on the injectors, lines, etc. Every injector I have ever seen will 'bleed down' over time, especially after they are a few years old, if this happens the fuel drains into the cylinders, and past the rings into the crancase and the oil, NOT a good situation. Actually Tom I think if you were to look at the statistics you would find that the single most common tractor upset IS a back-flip. The reason is fairly simple, most people adhere to the old 'if it feels uncomfortable, don't do it' and stay of hillsides. Most roll-overs with Ag. machines occur on flat level land, and I'm sure compacts are the same. I have seen the aftermath of two compacts that rolled over bush-hogging flat level land. The tendancy is to set the cruise control, point it at the other end of the field and wait till you get there. However, if the bush-hog happens to snag something of substance, and the tractors rear wheels do not stop turning, the front of the tractor will come up, as this happens two things occur. First the operator usually panics and freezes up, second, as the front of the tractor rises the weight shifts and the load, and therefore traction on the rear wheels increases, making it almost impossible to lose traction. Result, an upside down tractor. Believe me this will happen a LOT easier than you think. Best of luck.

We sure will have fun with this. Murf I went back and forth with a company once and come to find out for the way the companies sell oil no company has ever gone after a company that doesn't meet it's spec's. Many say they do but there are many differences in oil and the UDT is one of the toughest to copy. You may get by but that is all. To say how much it will hurt the unit not to have the manufacturers oil in it depends on the type of use. There are differences and for what I see some people useing I cringe.

Depending on where in Wisconsin I might be looking for a snowblower for your job. You might find it a little tough for a backblade after a couple of big snowfalls. Check out some of your neighbors and see what they are using.

Norm I wouldn't switch the size of the hoses as it will effect the performance of the unit. Most all dealers will be able to build hoses for you if you need to replace them. I wouldn't worry about them unless they are chaffed or show cuts on them.

Looking at buying a KubotaL3600 ,4wd , it's a '98 model , does not know the hours. It was a trade in at a local dealer.<br>It is also equipped with the ROPS and a Rhino<br>bush hog. Asking 11,500. Does this sound like a decent price or shuold I keep looking ?

As an after thought: If the filter cartridge is paper, it is probably intended to be replaced rather than cleaned. I think hydraulic filters are supposed to take out smaller particles than I'd expect cleanable filters to remove, but then I've been surprised before.

There was discussion on another board. Somebody was running a new backhoe off a PTO pump, and had extreme heat problems. My solution was that he was working the hoe too hard and stalling the hydraulics too often. True! Work the hydraulics less and the oil runs cooler. Somebody else pointed out the reservoir issue. PTO pumps usually have smaller reservoirs than the tractor hydraulics. He mentioned that there is an ideal ratio between pump capacity and reservoir size for heat dissipation, but I forgot the ratio. That also is undoubtedly true. I run a multi-season petro hydraulic oil. I think of the multi-season oil is advantage in my cold climate. For all I know, multi-season oils may also thin out less single-weights at higher temperatures. Synthetic oils reportedly run cooler and also might provide an advantage (if the break-in period is past).

Does any one know what kind of transmision oil to use in a L245DT? The oil pump for the 3 point hitch and the loader uses oil from the transmision.Thanks. Bob

Ed,
You should switch valve BEFORE you unhook the hoses(if tractor running). You are not supposed to run in closed position with hoses hooked up. Per manual it can damage your pump.

Also, if you ever look at a new blade or one that has been professionaly sharpend, there is always a smalee 1/32" TO 1/16" flat at the front of the blade and not a knife edge. This helps the blade maintain a better edge for a longer time. A sharp knife edge rolls over much quicker and easier and a blade with a small flat left on the end.

The tiller definately pushes you forwad when tilling. I had a 2WD Cub Cadet with Turf tires and on several occasions when tilling in soft ground I had to drop the tiller back down into the dirt to get unstuck.

Rod, the clutch is a single, two-stage clutch unit (and not cheap) I don't know of, but I'm sure there are, aftermarket suppliers. Since it is not a 'normal' clutch such as you may be used to (car, truck, etc.) I would not recommend you tackle it alone, if you feel you are able to do it, great, go ahead, but get the local dealer or someone to setup/assemble the clutch and plate, since it is two clutches in one they must be VERY closely aligned and adjusted or else you will not have both functions AND the correct free-play on both. This mis-adjustment can very quickly become very expensive. As for other things 'while you're there', absolutely, do EVERYTHING you can afford or care to do, especially transmission bearings, which are the first thing to wear. Best of luck.
