That did it. Thanks a million. It was the filter, clogged so tight that I don't know how anything was getting through it. It was the type that can be cleaned and was inside a canister that didn't even resemble a filter canister. But anyway I cleaned it and reinstalled it and everything works perfectly.

I think you nailed it. Do you have a suggestion on an online/phone parts house where I may be able to purchase a PTO clutch? Also, are there preventative things I can do while I have it split? Like Foot clutch, pressure plate,fork, seals, screens so I do not have to go back in for along time. The unit has alot of wear. Thanks again. Rod

You can also get JD manuals by calling 1-800-522-7448. This is the JD distribution center and they are the same manuals the dealer sells. I don't know if the dealer marks them up or not, but it would be worth checking.

Indirectly. I bought a 1070 and loader for my father as a small payback for a college education. As an after-thought, I decided a canopy would be good for keeping the sun off. As time went by I noticed cracks appearing in the canopy from finding building braces and guy wires. I thought oh well..then I noticed the BIG cracks. It seems he was pushing over a leaning dead tree with the bucket when another dead tree behind it fell on the tractor's canopy. I shuddered when I analyzed the direction of fall.

Hello,I have an Yanmar FX24D 28HP 4WD tractor with power-shift. The tractor has a problem with the PTO. 1st and 2nd PTO gears work fine but 3rd and 4th are locked up and will cause the tractor to die when you shift into them and pop the clutch. But the biggest problem is the PTO is always spinning except when you push the clutch in, even with the PTO gear in neutral (this is kind of dangerous since you can only turn off the PTO by locking the clutch in). I checked everything I know to check, PTO shift lever is shifting properly, fluid ok, etc. Any ideas? By the way, the tractor was orginally purchased at an auction like this.Thanks in advance! <br>Bobby =)

Sharpen the blades, it's that simple. Also, be sure they are sharpened only on top side, i.e the bottom of the blade should be totally flat, the cutting edge should NOT look like this < it should be a ramp up, not a wedge shape, if that makes sense. If it is not sharpened this way it will not cut correctly. Best of luck.

OK, I have finally got the time to rebuild my JD 7 backhoe control valves - thanks to all for their input. My next question is this - the unit is 15 years old. I bought it used and the hoses "look" ok except for corrosion at the connectors. Should I bite the bullet and replace all of the hoses or should I just brush down the connectors and paint them? Also, is there a less expensive alternative than buying the hoses from JD? I was contemplating getting stock length hoses from Northern and just dealing with the extra loop. Is this a good idea? Also, hoses on the 7 are 1/4" ID and the hoses from Northern would be 3/8" (same 3/8 NPT connectors). I am sure the larger hose wouldn't cause a hydraulic problem, but would there be a mechanical one for clearance where they route throught the unit? Thanks for the continued advice!!

Mike: Always nice to hear when a problem gets solved, and always interesting to hear what the problem actually was. That is one for the books--a correctly diagnosed problem with a truly unpredictable cause. Actually, I suppose a physicist might find some predictability to it, but fixing a tractor is more practical than theoretical. My 'for the book problem' was spending hours on a Triumph M/C that blew fuses unpredictably. Neither the other mechanics nor myself could find the problem or cause the fuse to blow no matter what we tugged or wiggled. I finally found a prediction. The fuse blew when driving downhill and when only the rear break was applied. Having found a prediction, it didn't take too long to find the cause. It was bad wiring where the wiring harness went around the steering crown. Going downhill and applying the rear break only caused a forward weight shift, which spread the forks forward and caused a short. Bring the bike back to the shop, and everything would test OK. Drive it around on the streets and it would be OK. Hit the hill and use both breaks OK. We must have gone through 30 fuses trying to find the problem. Anyway, that's my theory of repairs. If you can predict it, you can find it. Otherwise, you've just got to start putting new parts all around the problem until it goes away. Hope you, me or nobody else actually needs my repair theory in the future.

I took the day off yesterday to get some "seat time" on my tractor and generally to play. Adjusted the movable latch plates forward about 1/16 inch and then there was no problem raising the hoe high enough to engage the L-pins. And to put TomG at ease - you're right, the system won't go into relief simply by moving the rockshaft arms (which are the 3-point lift arms) to their full upper limit. The system was going into relief because the backhoe was lifted up against its stops and the rockshaft was not yet at its upper limit. Which makes sense now. My problem was not that the rockshaft couldn't lift high enough, it was that the mounting adjustment on the hoe was not allowing it to go high enough. Mounting and removing the hoe is now less than a five minute job each way - even going slow. Reminds me of one of my uncle's favorite sayings: "By the time I finish this job, I'll know how to do it!"

Around here hydraulic oil is sold in both 5 & 2.5 gallon buckets, but 5 gallon ones are the most common by far. An owner's manual should give you the hour intervals when hydraulic oil should be changed. The intervals for different tractors vary, but 400 to 600 hour intervals are common. Failure to change oil can result in premature wear to the gear train and hydraulic system. It can also lead to hydraulic system failure if the hydraulic filter becomes clogged. To change oil, you have to know where all the drain plugs are. Some tractors have four on the TX/DIFF and three on the front axle. You need some place to drain the oil and some way to get new oil into the tractor, and you need a new filter as well. Some tractors also have screens in the TX that must be cleaned. You should know the capacity of the reservoir so you know if the drain pan will hold the entire contents. Otherwise things get messy. You also should figure out how to dispose of the used oil. My tractor doesn't have enough ground clearance to fit a 5-gallon bucket under the drains, so I use a large drain pan. I have a pump that replaces the lid on a standard 5-gallon pain. The pump is very convenient--certainly more convenient than trying to balance large buckets and trying to pour through funnels. My auto garage takes the used oil. Some tractor dealers take back used oil—some places take it only when they’ve sold the new oil, and some places only in the original containers. Some people have friends who have waste oil furnaces. Getting rid of the used oil can be a problem, but it becomes a worse problem if it’s left sitting around. We inherited over 400-gallons in furnace tanks and drums along with a property we bought. The oil proved difficult and expensive to get rid of. My insurance broker said there would be no insurance coverage due to damage resulting from stored waste oil.

Keith, I went through the same scenario last year when I bought my 4400. Reality was that the pure economic justification was difficult, if not impossible, no matter how creative I was. But I went ahead and got the backhoe with the tractor because 1) it was about $1000 less to get it as a package at the same time, 2) it got covered under the financing, and 3) I knew that I would probably not spring for it in the future because of the big price tag. Now that I have the backhoe bought and paid for, I'm glad I did it. The convenience factor is huge for me because I spend a fair amount of time digging out rocks, stmps, and boulders that would not get done otherwise. I was able to put an "emergency" drainage trench in last fall in an hour when I needed it, rather that wait for a week to hire it out. I use the hoe far more than I ever imagined and for jobs I didn't imagine. I also think that between a backhoe and a loader with toothbar, it is perfectly reasonable to do the jobs you describe with the time limitations (or lack thereof) you describe. Not the fastest way to excavate a pond, but given time you can do it. I also consider it to be great therapy.

I spoke with the dealer and they said that it is not un-common, especially the first handful of times taking the mower deck off and on. Hopefully it will loosen up over time. I guees I will have to see.

I need to remove the loader (417 cub loader) so I can do some mows with a 6ft woods and a 5 ft hog. How as I understand it, after I remove the hydraulic connections I need to loosen the 12mm bolt on the pump and move this tab of steel 'backwards' to another hole. Correct?

Central Tractor (CT)in KY sold the poly units and had them in their catalogs few years ago, but I can not find CT on net nor can I find the units. Worksaver has steel units on the net and Northern tool (www.northerntool.com) has them for sale.

Well Murf, I got it almost right. Fortunately, the engines had been preped for storage by the marina with new oil, filers sta-bil ect...I pulled the plugs as you suggested and sprayed wd-40 into the inner banks. I could barely get my hands to the plugs on the outboard sides (forget about an oil can) so I gently rolled the engines over with a breaker bar placed on the fly wheel. They were not bound at all, in fact I believe the only thing that was stuck a bit were the belts to the pulleys. I have been unable to get rid of what I figure is about 100 gallons of gasoline, so I added carb cleaner to the lesser amount of fuel in the starboard tank and away we went. Had to clean the distributors and file the points but they both ran great. Once the new ignition parts are installed and I have time to rebuild the distributors, we should be in business. I plan on running the engines with fresh gasoline as soon as I can, then I will thoroughly winterize them, spending the rest of the summer working on it in my new barn (once it is done). I need one more project this summer to really do me in. Thanks for the advice.

Why not look at the commercial mowers? You can get 4wd, front deck, snowblower, and cab for a comparable price or less. The snowblower will be less because you will not need a drive from the mid pto and hydraulics to raise and lower it (already there for the deck). The only serious disadvantage is that you cannot install a loader on a commercial mower.

Yes, it is normal for hydraulics to lose some power when the fluid gets hot. That's one reason for large reservoirs.
