Dane, not a bad idea, but it would take me forever to drill the heads of the bolts with a small enough bit. Maybe if I had a machine shop? Anyhow, the bolts on my 4400 have never loosened, unless it was something the dealer caught last summer when I had it in for some warranty service. I've used it mostly for loader work this past year, but only have about 50 hours on it. I still check the bolts regularly, but so far, so good.

Peter, if the hose isn't leaking and you are able to connect and disconnect ok, then it should be ok to wait a month until your 50 hour service. I'd tell the dealer now because they may have to order the hose anyway.

Murf and Dave, I haven't been able to track down a poly pto mixer so far, only steel ones. I would be more interested in a poly unit also.

A quick word of caution (hopefully) before you fire up those engines. If they have not run for some years you will want to do a little more prep. to them than just the points and a charge. First thing is to is remove spark plugs and give each cylinder a squirt of diesel fuel, this will lossen the rings if sticky, disolve any surface rust and give the best possible compression for an easier start. Next drain the oil (or pump it out as the case may be), replace the filters and oil with new. After all you don't want to pump 5 year old dirty oil through a motor do you? It is now as drained as it will ever be. Lastly, spray carb cleaner down the carbs to remove or at least loosen any gum or varnish that has accumulated there. Lastly, after the engines fire up, don't forget to 'fog them down' after so that they will not rust internally before they go into regular service. Best of luck.

Thanks for all the input guys. I guess the logical thing to do first is pull the tank and blow out all the lines. I checked the shop manual and there is no mention of an internal filter in the tank, but who knows? When and if I ever figure this out, I'll post the solution for future reference. Thanks again.

Hi Roger. I made my living with my tractor for a couple of years, and a lot of that was backhoe work, so yes, she's got a lot of hours on her. As to the stabilizers, the answer is "sort of". The upper mount on the 'hoe is triangulated to the lower mounts. This limits the side-to-side motion to a couple of inches at most, and then only when transporting. With the rig properly set up for digging (stabilizer pads down far enough to lift the rear wheels of the tractor off the ground, FEL bucket rolled fully forward and loader down far enough to lift the front wheels off the ground) there is no noticable movement of the lower arms. The upper mounting point moves within the limits of slop in the pin/mounting hole which creates a certain amount of jerking, particularly in tough digging conditions. The most abuse of the mounting happens when digging in bad enough conditions that the 'hoe will drag the tractor, bucket and all, across the ground, or pick it up off the stabilizers while biting, and drop it when the boom is lifted. Generally, I take this as a hint and take smaller bites. Occasionally, I just bull my way through. In one extreme instance, I had to chain the front of the tractor to a Michigan loader to keep from skidding the unit across the worksite with every bite. I should have passed on that job, but they were desperate, and paying VERY well...

Dom, another suggestion. Some of the tractor supply houses sell toy tractors (riding size) that should be perfect for your son. Get him one for Christmas. He'll love riding it while you're riding yours. Just remember to keep him back from the real thing when you're operating it. JonB

You will want the 29 with a 72" deck. They have had a rebate going, to upgrade it was only 400 bones. Don't know if that is something that is still happening.

The Agco ST series compact tractor is the same tractor that is sold by Massey dealers as the 1200 series but painted orange for the Agco-Allis dealers instead of the Massey red. I have owned a Massey 1250 for 2 years and am well satisfied with it. I have a front end loader and a 6 foot mid mount deck and r-4 tires. I see that now you can get these tractors with either hydrstatic trans, 16foreward 16 reverse with power shuttle or 16 foreward 16 reverse with manual shuttle. Mine is a manual shuttle which suits me fine as it is syncro shuttle and I am a firm believer in the KISS principal ( Keep It Simple Stupid)

Hope you get this one figured out. I think I'm out of easy fix ideas that could be done without a manual. Regarding filter location. Many compacts use spin-on canister types that shouldn't be hard to locate. Some use a permanent container with replaceable elements (the permanent container looks like a heavy-duty canister with a hex-head on top. The Ford 1310 (two steps smaller than mine) uses a different type permanent container that looks more like a metal cylinder that bolts onto the pump. Most filters are mounted near or on the pump. You can find the filter by tracing the suction line from the sump. The suction line usually is a large steel tube that attaches to the TX/DIFF case (The left side for Ford 17 & 1510's and the right side for 1310's) and runs forward to near the front of the engine. The line may have some rubber sections and may use ordinary hose clamps. Suction lines inevitably run to the filter. Many pumps are located near an engine�s front, because the pumps are driven from the cam or oil pump gears that are located under the timing gear cover that cover most of the front of an engine. A few pumps may be driven from a gear on the cam shaft and would be located near mid-engine.

When I think about using the hoe, maybe 140 does sound more like it. I actually ordered an older model, and I didn�t retain the literature. Apparently the model changeover occurred after my order was placed, and I was surprised when a different model number showed up--even more surprised that it showed up on a 50' float. Only a baby hoe on a big truck. I don't know if the older model had a wider swing or if my memory of the literature is faulty. Perhaps making a virtue out of a deficiency, I'll say that a 140 swing hoe should be less subject to tractor flips on side hills. Of course, a hoe shouldn't be dumped on the downhill side anyway, so there's really no virtue other than price. It did take awhile for me to realize the reason for 'always dump uphill' safety rule. Never the less, the hoe has done almost all of what needed doing and certainly is less stressful on the tractor frame than a larger hoe. �Course maybe the attraction is that the low seat reminds me of the Harley I never had.
