I have a question on the use of tire chains. Does anybody know where you can or can't put tire chains. Common sense tells me that it is OK to put chains on all 4 tires and / or chains on just the rear tires. So what I am trying to learn is. Is it acceptable and safe to put chains on just the front tires ? Or will this create problems for the tractor. I am thinking ahead for Winter. YECH !! Thanks, Mark

Franc, a diesel tractor engine, properly maintained, should be good for 7,000 to 10,000 hours before needing a major overhaul.

The ROPS (roll over protection SYSTEM) includes both the rollbar AND the seatbelt. Using one without the other negates the safety of the system. And if you think you can jump clear of a tractor as it rolls while not wearing your seatbelt, you're playing Russian roulette. You MIGHT be able to jump clear, but then again, you might not. Rolling a tractor with a rollbar and not wearing a seatbelt is just asking for the rollbar to crunch you too. Wear your seatbelt!

I was having trouble with the hydrostatic drive on my TC29D and the dealer came out and replaced the electromagnet that holds the hydro pedal in position when the cruise control is on. The mechanic admitted he doesn't have much experience with the cruise control. He put some grease between the magnet and the plate that it contacts with so it would "be less likely to stick". That didn't seem right to me. It seems like the grease will just attract dirt and cause it to stick when it shouldn't, plus it doesn't need lubricant since it's not supposed to move when it's engaged. Now I'm afraid the grease is going to cause it not to hold the pedal in position when the cruise is activated. You have to remove the lower part of the dash to see it. It's on the left side. If the tractor is not running, but the key is turned on, you can see it activate and hear it click when the cruise is turned on and off. I don't think there was any grease on there to start with (I wasn't there when the mechanic put the new one on), so I'm considering cleaning it off. What do some of you folks think?<br>

Has anyone had any experience/pricing info for a 4700 model with HST? I am in the market and have decided to look at JD. I had decided on purchasing a NH 35D/40D, but JD is very popular in my area, and I am thinking about resale value. I have pricing from 2 different dealers for around $24K for the tractor/460 loader combo.<br>

Here is some more feedback... that high pitched whine does go away on my new 4300 after it is warmed up so I'm not going to be too concerned about it.

My parking brake doesn't seem very strong. I was backing into a backhoe task yesterday on a slight incline and it wouldn't hold. I put down the FEL and that stopped me from rolling. Can someone tell me if their brake is tighter?

Otherwise, the second weekend of work went along just great! I'm clearing brush by digging down a few inches with the backhoe and then scooping/pushing it into one big pile with the FEL. Still very happy with my new "tool"! Just wish I could keep the cover on it during the week...

Thanks for all the help - any additional thoughts will also be most welcome. I will be pricing out the parts to replace the o-rings and seals today. It looks like I have to do alot of un-plumbing (is that a word??) as well as dealing with corrosion around the hose connections to the cylinders so I will price out a set of hoses as well since it is going to be all apart. It's an old unit I purchased used, so it just might be time for a full overhaul.

Mr. Jacobs,

Thanks for your post. You are correct. Kubota specifically warns against using the rear and mid ptos to run implements at the same time. Since I usually have a sickle bar hung on the 3 point, it never occurred to me that it was OK to engage both ptos. Just don't have an implement loading the rear pto.

The mid pto and belly mower worked fine.

Well, not exactly the same problem, but it's kind of funny to think about. Sort of the equivalent of painting yourself into a corner. I was trenching for underground electrical service between two buildings. I realized that if I went from one building to the other I'd have the tractor rad against a wall and about 20' of trench left to dig by hand or from the side. I didn't want to do that, so I figured I could dig some trench at one building, then at the other and meet in the middle. Then I realized 'Yikes!' I'm going to end up with one trench, a building at either end and a set of wheels on either side. So; could I leave enough trench to drive over and finish by hand, could I drive over the trench without a front wheel dropping into the trench, or could I place enough railroad ties to drive over? Fortunately, I anticipated the problem before experiencing it. I dug most of the trench, put in conduit and then backfilled. I then did the rest of the trenching and drove out over the backfilled part. Anyway, I still have visions of myself and tractor straddling a trench between buildings and wondering how to get off the trench without burying a 15” tire. A bigger tractor with bigger front wheels, and I probably would have just driven off the trench.

Hello all! I have been lurking around on the boards here for the last two months and got some great advice on tractors. I'm now the proud owner of a JD 790 with bucket and brush hog which so far has done a great job on our 10 acre slice of heaven which is soon to become a small orchard. I have a question on pheasant pens and how to remove them. The former owner of the property attempted to raise pheasants, did not do well and let the top netting settle down on the ground and the weeds have grown up into the nets. How can I get the netting up?<br>(burning is not an option) I have cleared two of the six pens by cutting the edges of the netting loose then using the bucket to get under the edge of the netting then pushing it to the back of the pen. Any suggestions?
