I have a King Kutter 60" side discharge. I have had if for 5 years and it works excellent. Paid 850.00. Only costs are new belt($18) and blades($30) every year. I think they are worth a look if sold in your area. Yellow color also matches my Cub:)

I'm looking at a 1987-1910 Ford 4w, with 405 hrs selling for $9200. What I would like to know is this a good deal, what implememnts that can be used on it. I would use it for moving fire wood,mowing ect.

J.T., if you want to compare the Kubota models, go to the link below (Kubota's web site). The L2600 and L3000 are basic tractors, while the L3010 (Grand L Ten series) has more bells and whistles, options in transmissions, etc. All good tractors; just depends on what you want and how much money you're willing to spend. And I'll leave it to someone else to give a comparison with the John Deere. I haven't used any of the late model small Deere tractors.

J.T., in my opinion (and I'm not much of an expert on prices), that's a fair deal; not a great one, but not bad. The L2600 (DT, I presume - you did say it's 4WD?) is a good, basic tractor if you want the manual transmission instead of the hydrostatic that most of us prefer. And while I'd much prefer having a Kubota front end loader on a Kubota (keep the brands and colors the same, both for personal preference and for resale value), I've never heard anything bad about an Allied loader.

How about using a chipper/shredder? I have a C/S with a blower, made by Bearcat, and the first thing I used it for was to chop and blow straw over freshly seeded area. As I recall, we pretty easily got 25-30' coverage, and I have a small unit. Of course, the C/S is usable for other work too...

I like to think it was my superior planning that made things work out!!! But, all I really did was get my wife interested in tractoring too, and here comes the Hyd. Dump Bagger, the chipper shredder, hopefully a tiller, etc. I DO recall arguing that the more implements we had, the more valuable the tractor would be to us...
Seriously, not everyone needs or wants all those implements - I only got the sickle-bar mower to keep some banks trimmed, not because I'm haying. And, some implements can be rented - I doubt I'll buy a post-hole digger, a local dealer has those for rent at a reasonable price. You guys made some very good points in this thread - especially about smaller tractors doing the work but only taking a little longer. I was reasonably aware of the capabilites before I got mine, but now I'm amazed at it. For those of us who are "Production Oriented", bigger usually does result in increased production - but fortunately a lot of us bought our tractors so that they can enjoy the process. <grin>

Jeff -- We're on the outskirts of Stowe, which is rapidly becoming one big gated community. Yet another reason to like the Ags is the pattern they leave in the dirt road. That washboard texture sure slows down the tourists who come rocketing up the road!

Treeman, a couple of observations, first, I don't know where you are located, but around here the quantity of wood you are talking about is approx. $5,000 worth of firewood. Secondly, if you are in a 'plantation setting' surely you wouldn't remove the stumps, since the live stump and one branch would give you a marketable tree 4-5 years from now. Third and finally, if it is something like needlecast which can only survive on a living tree, why wouldn't you just get a chipper, the mulch will return a lot of valuable nutrients to the soil and do a LOT to keep the undergrowth down. Oops, FarmerWannabe, I forgot, you asked how much to put in your tires; no more than 75% full of liquid. If you fill them with the valve stem at the top, when you get enough for it to run out there, you'll be at about the 75% level. Of course, if you don't need or want that much ballast, some folks only fill them 50%, so do it with the valve stem at the 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock position.

Frank, I know what you mean about hanging on the end of a hose in the heat, but that's what I do. My garden's about 9,000 square feet, I plant the rows 4' apart, and I water with one of the high volume, low pressure wands on the hose and just walk up and down the rows. It serves a couple of purposes: (1) I water right in the row, not between the rows, so I use less water - I'm having to buy mine, and (2) not watering between the rows keeps down the grass and weeds. A neighbor has a pump and line from one of his stock tanks, so he just uses a sprinkler; one of those with the spike that sticks in the ground and the sprinkler head on top is about 2 feet off the ground. Problem is that he grows as much grass as anything else in his garden.

Brad, congratulations on your new tractor! I enjoyed the line of reasoning leading to your purchase. Did you get a loader with the tractor besides the blade? Prices must vary across the country some, because a year ago I pretty much saw price parity in my area between the Kubotas, Deeres, and the Boomers when I included loader and backhoe and allowed a little for hp differences. I was comparing JD 4300 (32hp), NH TC33D (33hp), Kubota 3410 (34hp) and JD 4400 (35hp). Then again, I saw a wide price range across dealers within a single brand, and I remember that certain Deere dealers were the highest overall.

I live in Minnesota and have a block heater on my Cub 7275. I use it all the time and would not be without one. Diesels CAN start in cold but its so much easier on them if they are warm up first. I have an outside timer on electrical cord and it comes in early in am and tractor ready to go when I am. I have not had any trouble with hydro unless super cold. 20 below stuff. Then just stiff for a few minutes. We have had tons of snow this year and tractor and loader (Have a 7' Lorenz blower too) have been a huge asset. Just ask my neighbors!
Well gotta go, big storm coming again this weekend. Supposed to get another foot or better of the white stuff. Regards PJ Drew

I have an older 7200 diesel.
There is a knob/lever on the left that I use to shut the engine off.
Is this the decompression lever?
When I pull the throttle all the way back my engine IS in idle and continues running.
I don't have any way to shut this thing off other than pulling out this knob.
Do I have an alternative?

With regard to your mower question.......I faced same decision not too long ago........ended up going with the JD 60 inch mid mount mower......
remember one thing.....if you can't get the tractor and/or rear mount mower into where you want to cut grass.....the grass don't get cut...just about that simple....yes...JD mowers cost a little more...but take a close look at the quality and you will see why....and especially if you want to go with a mid mount......try and spring for the Deere model.....everything has to be aligned just so....to make it fit......with rear mount jobbies...you can slap anything back there.....
and as far as installing and removing mower........well...probably 90 percent of ur jobs you can just leave the mower on and do whatever it is you want to do.......but time wise...once u have removed it a couple of times....you shouldn't need more than...10 minutes..max...to remove or intall same....at least that what it takes me.....and you don't need any

I have the exact mower your looking for is presently mounted on a 870 with only 330 hrs. I am a used equipment dealer, who sells only J.D., and so far no one wants the belly mower - it has less than 300 hours on it; no rust, structural damage and totally complete. What would you give me for it and Im near Allentown PA and you?

Thanks for the info re: tillers versus discs. I'd been thinking about getting a disc, after deciding NOT to get a tiller, but after reading of your experiences I think I'll go back to my original idea - a good, strong 50"-ish tiller. I'm also pleased to hear that you have the landpride and like it - I have a couple of Landpride dealers around here, ought to be able to find something used...Besides, I'm ready to try Landpride's 3PT quick hitch (QH-15), so perhaps a deal can be made!

I have a Landpride scarifier (SF2566) and landscape rake (LR15-60) - both 5foot (60 inch) units. They're pretty heavy duty. I don't think I'm gonna have to worry about breaking either one with my li'l 4100 !
