Randy,i have a 790 with a 261 rear mount grooming mower.I had a four wheel gauge kit installed on it,and it cuts great!It did take some getting used to,but i like how quick i can "drop" the mower and move on to something else.That may be something to consider.Good luck!

Yeah, Michigander, good point there on comparison. The spec'ed lift capacity of the 460 loader on a JD4500-4700 is 2325 lbs to max height of 111.9 inches at the pivot point. But we can leap-frog these specs all day. The bottom line for me is that the 16LA on a TC35D seems to be at the head of the class for a 35 hp general purpose tractor/loader combination (not counting the Kubota L35 of course!). As a result of this thread I've taken a much closer look at the 16LA loader with an engineer's eye and I'm really impressed with the design. It appears that the NH engineers started with a clean sheet of paper and discarded conventional geometries and fabrication assumptions. The only drawback I see is that it appears longer than conventional designs. Now I'll have to get somebody I know to buy one so I can really try it out!

One of the fun things about having a little land is having a place to play with your tractor. Almost everyone wishes that they had bought a slightly larger tractor. You rarely hear of anyone wishing that their tractor was smaller. But the truth is that for 5 acres just about any size will work fine. The smaller ones will take longer to do the job, but not too much so. Frankly, anything from about 18 hp on up will do the job. BTW, you will never use all that extra horsepower. What the larger horsepower tractor is buying you is not horsepower - that is just a bonus. What you are really getting is a wider heavier platform to use wider heavier tools.

Not really Rob,
My wife pointed out that we might be moving in 2 1/2 years. She'll be starting a residency program then, and wondered if moving up was wise. I haven't given up on it completely, but I haven't been actively pursuing it either. Just thinking about it. Are you interested, or just curious? Or do you have a suggestion?

I would not worry about draining the gravel. As long as the slope drains away from the building on all sides you shouldn't have any problems. One thing you might want to consider is a geotextile between your earth/fill and the gravel to prevent mixing. Of course, this will depend on your local conditions.

I had the same problem with a 755 a couple years ago, except I was trying to pull a plow and disc. I found some R-4's the exact size as the turf's. As long as are the exact same size they will work fine. I have a address of a tire company that supplys tires for JD,NH and others for there compact tractors how ever it's at work, so tomarrow I'll post there address and you can go from there.

Murf, you actually made me blush! Doesn't happen too often, either. No, all I got was wiser, and at the time it sure wasn't worth it, but accumulated wisdom pays off in the long run. I'm still laughing about how foolish I looked (and felt) that day. BTW, about 10 years after that incident I ran into that gal at a diner and didn't even recognize her. By that time I was a hot-shot young electrical engineer who travelled all over the country trouble-shooting big gas turbine engine-alternators. And was still a batchelor. She had been married twice already, had 2 or 3 kids, had gained about 50 pounds, and was waiting tables at night to help make ends meet. Makes you wonder, huh?

Craig, that aluminum cover is the end cap for the SCV. Removing it gives access to the valve spools. Under the large caps are check valve assemblies. To the left of the SCV body facing down are two plugs. According to the parts manual the available rear auxiliary hydraulic kit(part # BM19290)is plumbed in there.

Justine, if you are in central Florida there are lots of Air Bases around, have you considered a small thermonuclear device? Palmettos are about the second worst thing to try and get rid of. I had to clear a large area of them in the building of a golf course two years ago. Not fun at all. Relatively easy though. The re-growth is luckily not my responsibility, it's the turf maintenance dept's headache. As for prices, shop around, including some of the out of state dealers (most that I have noticed advertising here on the 'board' seem to have pretty good prices). Also remember that if you buy a 'northern' tractor it will probably have a LOT less hours per year on it, so it will look more expensive, but iss really a better deal in the long run. Best of luck.

Rick, as touched on by Ted and Roger, there is always the temptation to try the "fix-in-a-can". However, maybe as an engineer if I give you a little understanding of how such products work will make it a little clearer to you. An "O" ring works by creating a physical barrier between two parts, be they moving (as in a valve) or fixed (like between to segments of a valve body). Leaks are obviously caused by a gap where there shouldn't be one, this can be from old age, improper installation, or even debris in the sytem. The fit between the two parts is critical to create the right amount of friction WITHOUT causing distortion, which in itself would cause seal failure and a leak. The type of additive you are talking about works by introducing a chemical into the system which causes the seal to swell up, hopefully plugging the leak. The problem is that the product is "non-selective", ie it affects ALL material in the system equally, NOT just the 'bad' seal. It is sort of like pouring Diesel on your lawn, sure it kills the weeds and the insects, along with everything else. Now don't mis-understand me, I am a devout user of additives myself, but like anything else, "Use the right tool for the job". In this case the right tool is a wrench, replace the $2 "O" ring (albeit, it will be probably cost $50 for labour...) and spend your "additive" budget on something more appropriate, like some Amsoil 10W-40 for the engine ;->

I use a Bush Hog ATH720 side discharge mower and couldn't be happier.It sucks up the grass that the tractor mashes down and leaves a nice cut..This mower has a high blade tip speed and high suction blades witch is what make the mower work.

Bob, I am no expert on grass but do get high remarks for my lawn from my peers.Anyway I ran into the same thing abou two years ago and I went and rented a power takeoff overseeder..This is a 3 pt seeder that "slices" about an inch then drops seed and or fertilizer in the 'slits".Worked like a charm !The key is get the seed in the ground with seed to soil contact..But of course you need to kill the weeds first. Then as Ted says...Water, water, water.This is the most important ingredient

Roger was right on the mark, yes it is a late model grey market tractor. The 24 in the model name indicates 24 pto hp or about 27/28 gross hp. The D indicates 4wd. For other info you might go to the Yanmar group at the following link. BTW where are you buying this tractor from? Have a friend in AL with loader selling his for $9,800.00 as best as I can recall.

Luke, you have me a bit confused. Why would you want to flush your transmission? If there is no obvious contamination present, like metal chips, dirt, or gasket material, then you should just perform the regularly scheduled maintenance. If there is a problem with contamination, other than sludge which is often caused by moisture, then the transmission should be disassembled, carefully examined, cleaned, dried, and reassembled. You just can't reach all of the nooks and crannies by introducing another fluid into the case, and you never, ever, want to introduce a cleaning fluid into an assembled transmission case under pressure. As far as kerosene is concerned, it is best left as a fuel. The only time I use it to clean is when something is all apart, never when it is assembled. If sludge is the problem, then drain the case, change the filters, and re-fill using the manufacturer's approved fluid.

I too have the 54 inch deck on my 4100. My complaints. I'd have to echo the comments of these other two gentlemen. They explained things very well. The only thing I can add is to say that removal and reattaching the deck is very easy on a hard concrete surface but very difficult on unlevel ground. Also, I have the mower deck lift-latch kit and I would highly recommend the purchase of this accessory (cost $75). It allows you to lock the deck in the raised position which using the 3 point hitch. You can also limit the mower's lowest point using this kit. Another nice feature is that you can pin the mower deck lift arms up when the mower is off so that they are not dragging in the dirt when plowing, tilling, ect...
