Do you have a digital camera so you could take a couple pitures for me? I am building my own, and am looking at how the plows attach to the frame to allow tripping and adjustment for angle of the plow(contact angle with ground, not the right-left-straight angle). I would GREATLY appreciate it if you could.

Cherokee: simple, boxier, good vehicle. I bought a 94, have a 160,000 miles on it, no major repairs and still going strong. (Gotta love those I-6's)

Grand Cherokee: Cushier, more refined, better ride. Other than that, I think the powertrain is the same.

If you want a Cherokee, jump now. 2001 is the last year for them! They are being replaced by the Liberty, which I think is pretty funny looking. More like a Rav 4 looking thing, kind of.

I have a Koyker 150 loader on my Cub 7260. I have about 225 hours on the tractor, and the loader has never been off of it. I've had no problems at all with the loader.

No experience with rear discharge, but based on my experiences with Woods 72" side discharge, I'd recommend Woods. Does an excellent job of mowing. Seems like it sucks the grass up after the tractor tires have driven over it really well.

Sorry to lose you. BTW, if you have a "toothbar for the bucket" does this mean that you have a loader as well? You didn't mention it.

I purchased a 1999 left over at a auction last fall 4x4,loader,strong running machine,they do smoke more than average,plenty of tork,downpresher was nice at the hitch,I did sell the tractor 2 months later for what I payed for it,I was
afraid of getting stuck with a machine that I payed good money for might be hard to get parts for and I couldnt find anyone to honor the warranty, I found plenty in usa and canada having a good supply of parts .If I found another one cheap I would consider getting one again if it was 2 wheel drive,I was told by several people that the front end is week with ratcheting type hubs,good luck,glenn

I agree with john ,I bush hog a little more than 5 acres with my 790 4wd using a big old john deere 506 bush hog and it does the job well. The adding of 4wd gives you 3 advantages, First 4 wheel drive, second a 2 stage clutch which really helps foward and reverse gear shifts or up shifting with the bush hog running ,Third power steering.Also you might want to check out your tire options , The R1s are great in feilds but are not kind to your lawn. You might want to op for R4s alot kinder to your lawn but still gives you great traction.

Keith, I bought a JD 4300 last year with a front-end loader and a brush hog> I bought a 18' trailer thinking that I would rather have too much trailer rather than not enough. The first time I loaded the tractor with the brush hog attached I found out that I filled up the entire trailer. I recommend you take a tape measure with you and go measure the length of the tractor with the longest attachments you think you will ever have.

John, after reflecting on your post feel I should make a suggestion based on a hydraulic problem I had for a year and a half. I don't have a Deere, I have several Cub Cadets and one, a 7275 (hydro MFWD) equipped with FEL and hoe just couldn't seem to lift more than the 23hp gear drive Cub I also have. Several trips to the dealer, who claimed to have checked out EVERYTHING, revealed nothing. The problem got a little worse in cold weather, with the relief valve screaming with the slightest load. I brought it back to the dealer and they replaced the FEL loader valve, the problem continued. I called Cub and they told me what to do. After hooking up a test gauge I found the problem to be so easy to fix that I almost cried. The Cub, being an open center machine, has three pressure relief valves: 1 on loader frame, 1 built into the loader valve, and one built into the hydraulic block on the hoe. If any one is defective or out of adjustment the whole system suffers. I adjusted each according to spec.'s and the machine came alive (I did replace the valve on the loader frame as it couldn't hold the pressure). The system had been out of adjustment from day one, and here I was getting ready to move up to a bigger machine, just what I think the dealer wanted. So, before you get too far ahead of yourself, run a simple hydraulic pressure test. You may find all of the strength you are looking for is right in what you already have. Best of luck.

Morning Bob I do not like to try and pull much snow forward either. The rear blade will clean right down throught your tracks but with any amount of snow they tend to load up. You'll spend a lot of time going over what you did recleaning it. You did not say how big a tractor or bucket you have. So I'll shoot from the hip. You can increase the size of your bucket with some bolt on wings for snow or bulk material (sawdust, chips etc). Make them as wide as you need. You could order an aftermarket blade for your loader also. I'll still bet what you have is 10X better than the old shovel.

GWS, count me as another ground engaging JD 4100 fan. My box scraper is about 450 lbs., (usually with scarifiers down at the start of a job). It also handles a post hole digger w/ 12" auger, a middle buster (with various flyers and furrows attached). The furrows are used for laying pipe and plowing. But I'm still shopping for the perfect tiller and rock rake. I've moved tons of earth and rock with the loader and box. My 3pt mower is a flail mower/shredder weighing around 650 lbs. The 4100 seems perfect for me, although you should evaluate all the great machines against your needs. My only Deere implement is the loader. Best of luck. JonB

Found a Cab from Jodale Perry Corp for the 4700. They do offer them for models 4200 through 4700, and it looks like a factory install, like the orange one. The base list price is $3475, and they offer many optional features depending on your needs and use. The salesmen, Angus Kyle 204-822-9100, said it was a ROPS Cab and replaces the ROPS that comes on the tractor, unlike Curtis which sits in front of it.Are there any other manufacturers who make Cabs compatible with the 4700 other than Jodale and Curtis?Also heard that JD offers one, Europe only. Anyone know why?<br>

Reuben, I can remember when I was so new to these tractors that I didn't
even know what questions to ask. In fact, I remember when it finally dawned
on be that 3pt hitches were standardized - which meant that any implement
would work on every tractor! What a eye-opener!
(Of course then I found that some grey market tractors had
reverse-rotating PTO shafts...but luckily they are rare)

Most compact tractors will do the job. The major brands are very similar
in quality and capability. Compared with any other tool that you care to
name, all of these tractors will surpass you with their ability, their
durability, their price, and their resale. It is not uncommon for one to be
20 years old, have a thousand hours on it with no repairs needed of any
kind - and none expected, and see that it is selling for about exactly what
it cost brand new in 1981.
What bothers me about your tractor decision is that I am afraid that it may have to be driven by the slope of your land - which changes things dramatically. A 15 percent slope is enough do this. I think we need some more info on the land itself. Where is the grass? On the slope? Come to think of it, are you intending to mow with the tractor or is it for other chores? What kind of soil do you have...many rocks? What kind of climate....those sorts of things.

I had a 955 ( w/7A loader) for 8 years. loved it, neat toy. I bought a 4400HST. I didn't like the idea of the tractor being so much larger, and heavier. The 4400 is so much stronger and very maneuverable that the 955 is a waste of time when it comes to moving dirt.

I find that the difference in the two terms boils down to the amount of time and parts are required to get to the bottom of the problem. Auto's like tractors have gotten more complex. I enjoy working on some parts of them, do to my education being in the late 60's I don't know about the spagetti when you open the hood. I could experiment with it and learn more about the system as to why this does that and why but I have little need to. I have a friend that does that type of work but he doesn't enjoy getting his hands dirty so after he finishes getting that out of my way than I work on the engine. Often when you talk to the right person they will be able to tell you exactly what areas need to be looked at in order to fix the problem. That eliminates them from needing to experiment with your equipment because at the schools they were trained in ways to properly repair that piece of equipment. So many times I've heard about a mechanic who has tried to fix something several times but can't seem to put a finger on it, two three times back to the shop and the bills are still coming and with no results. That is the difference, I've been on both sides and give me the tech for those moments, otherwise a mechanic can be a great friend.

Steve I didn't answer all that you had on your list so I'll finish it now. A loader doesn't need to be greased daily unless used all day and if I were to rate it for snow removal at this time of the year one squirt a week would be sufficent or every 10 hours of operation. You should check for loose bolts and hydraulic leaks every time you go to use it. On the deck, you should check it with every use, clean it and be sure the idler and belt tension pivots are free and move easily. I find that that is often over looked and is the biggest reason for premature belt failure on many decks. The Kubota double width belt gives many people years of no belt failuresas long as that is keep clean. Greasing should be done at 50 hour intervals on the deck including spindles, wheels,and driveshaft.

Murf, that blade sounds impressive to me too. I'd love to see a picture. As far as patents, I think you may be missing a good bet. And it is a subject that I know something about, since I hold a number of patents - mostly of the "original idea" type that you mention. Some years ago the patent office extended the concept of patent from the "original idea" to also include "any improvements on an existing idea or process". These patents are just as strong and even easier to get. They usually start with a description of a problem with some existing product and offer a solution that will solve some aspect of the problem. You get a patent on this solution, not on the entire product.
