Brand loyalty is not an issue with me. Its no secret the 4100 is built by Yanmar. I agree poor workmanship should be unacceptable for the consumer. There is entirely to much low quality products being produced today. I'm just trying to understand if the metal particle contamination originally being discussed is going to be a problem to the life of the tractor. Seems to be a common discovery. It would be great if a lot of this work came back to the states. Will it? I don't know.

Glad you like the BX. I think that Kubota builds an excellent tractor. If JD has really missed the boat then maybe they will just buy up the product line, paint them green, and market them as JDs.....Don't laugh, they've done it before. It did well for them, too. And they aren't the only company to do this. Given the high cost of developing a new product from scratch, this tactic can work out pretty well for a company.

Eric, it sounds like you are on top of it. Really, there isn't much preventive maintenance that you can do that you are not already doing. Talking to the Deere rep was a good move. Too bad you didn't keep any of the particles, the relative proportions of the various materials is easy enough to measure, and would tell us a lot - particularly if it changes from oil change of oil change. I wouldn't be surprised if the screen has caught and eliminated most of the aluminum tooling process shavings. From here on out what you should see is very finely ground particles of iron growing like a beard on the magnet. This is normal wear. A sign to be concerned is when the magnet begins to pick up identifiable chunks of magnetic material.
One thing you might want to do is to document somehow the conversations with the JD rep. Lots of companies are glad to help you out past the warranty if you can prove to their satisfaction that the claim is legit. Emails, faxes, letters,....something more concretethan a telephone conversation.

The 1300 is a nice little tractor. It will handle a 48" pull behind mower. You remove the 4 bolts and it has a standard PTO shaft. Sooner Sales has a set of arms for sale on the Yanmar clubs page.Check it out. The Yanmar Club on Yahoo is a great source of information on the 1300. It also has several parts dealers on it. I deal in Yanmars. I couldn't do it without that club.

Don't know why me, but this is another message I can't respond to. Best choices for the problem are the starter relay, the starter switch, repay and starter wiring and safety switch. I don't know if the 1715 has a safety switch for both the transmission and PTO, but the safety switches are good candidates for creating the problem. Good luck with finding the problem. It's a little hard to work on electrical problems without a wiring diagram--hope you've got one. I have one for 1710's, but I don't know how similar it is to the 1715. Best hope is for a simple oversight like the PTO was left engaged.

I forgot to ask if you're in a cold area. Part of the idea of bad fuel is diesel gelling in cold temperatures. The cloud point of some #2 diesel is 15F, and at those temperatures wax particles can start forming and clog the fuel filter. Use of an anti-gel additive is a good idea during the winter. Anti-gel additive doesn't do much good after the fact, and serious gelling may require replacing the filter as well as draining and flushing the fuel tank. Anti-gel additive doesn't do much good after the fact. It gets real cold here, and I use #1 diesel plus anti-gel.

Help! My father-in-laws Ford 1715 (about 4 years old?) won't start. He was using it normally, shut down to move some stuff and when he got back on, it won't start. The lights work, the instrument panel lights, it just won't turn over. When he turns the key, he gets nothing, no clicking, no anything, except the gauges come on. Any help would be greatly appreciatated. Thanks.

Hillbilly, What you are looking for you may find in a flotation type tire. These tires are usually twice as wide as the normal tire. Try some of the larger tire companies that make Ag. or Industrial type tires. David

We are very disappointed with our 2120. The clutch chewed itself up after only 258 of relatively light use costing us $1400.00 This is not our first tractor. We had aFord 2000 for over 30 years without ever having to replace the clutch so its not like we abused it. Ours has the HST. In the future we'l try to use the clutch less replying instead on the shuttle shift.

Price comparisons are difficult to respond to. On the net, you can't get a sense of a used tractor's condition or local markets. In my case, prices are in a different currency. In general, 14 acres probably could use a larger tractor, but it's mostly a question of time. Small tractors can do most tasks done by larger ones, but it just takes longer. Generally, small tractors take small implements (or small bites with larger implements) which requires more passes to complete a job. However, there are exceptions. For example, if you need to trench 5' with a backhoe, then you need a 6+' hoe, which may not reasonably be used on a small tractor. Generally, I'd say that 14 acres could use a larger tractor. I've got a 1710 with turfs and 4 acres. The 1710 is a little large, and most times I'm traction rather than power challenged. However, I do need a 6.5' hoe, and I do like my 6' box scraper and 5' snow blower. I suspect that I'd sometimes be power challenged with a 1510. On the other hand, I do my mowing with a riding mower. I can do it faster than with the 1710. The 1710 would leave too much trimming and take too long to maneuver around landscaping. Regarding tires, factory options for the 1710 are ag or turf tires. They take different wheels, so changing tire types is expensive. I don't know if industrial tires are available that fit the turf wheels. A dealer should know. The issue here is not only finding industrials the fit on the wheels, but also a tire set that preserves the rolling circumference ratio between front and rear wheels. Front and rear drive ratios are designed to accommodate different sized front and rear tires, but you have to keep the same size ratio as one of the factor tire sets.

I installed a "Multi mount winch" on the front of my JD 4400. I fabricated a trailer hitch receiver on the weight extension bracket and am still able to put 8 suitcase weights on the bracket. I can use this winch on the hitch receiver on my pickup too. I could pull my tractor up hill with brakes set. I thought this might be handy if I ever get stuck or have to pull a tree down or move a log, just to help get me out of a bind. Also I can move a trailer or log splitter on the hitch mounted on the front. The winch is an XD9000i.My battery only has 500 reserve amps, 750 reserve recommended for use of winch.Best regards,<br>Hillbilly

The B2910 comes with a rear PTO shaft COVER, and a rear PTO shaft CAP. The shaft cover is the u-shaped metal flange that wraps around the top and sides of the PTO and is intended as a safety shield. The cap is a black plastic cap that covers the PTO shaft itself and is supposed to keep gunk off the shaft. The manual says keep the COVER on at all times, and replace the CAP when the shaft is not in use. The ROPS has nothing whatsoever to do with the cover, and you should have a cover installed; my B2910 came with both btw.

Joe, My two cents. Go with a trailer rated for more than your intended load and DEFINATELY spend the extra two hundred bucks for brakes. Remember, the road is not always going to be dry and smooth. That 5000# + will push that f350 through a slick intersection when you least expect it. Depending on how large you go, our company has much better luck with dual wheel tandem axle than the triple axle single wheel models.
