I was told that you could start your tractor up and keep it running on WD-40 untill the air would get out of your lines...
I guess they would fill the injector line up with the WD-40.

$Has anyone ever heard or seen a roofrack for a fiberglass canopy?I have a Bucktop canopy which is very strong,I think a basket style would be nice to put a shovel,chainsaw,lunchbox etc on.I have looked at different places on the web etc.I could make one if I had the right materials?<br>I know you do not want to put too much weight upstairs because of balance and stability.Any thoughts?<br>Hillbilly$ Roof rack for fiberglass canopy

Eric--Although Roger could not remember any failures related to these metal filings, metallic contamination has been an issue with some of the 4200, 4300 and 4400 Deeres and has been mentioned before. My 4400's transmission needed to be replaced due to metallic contamination--the suction screen was full of metal filings, the hydro filter was clogged with fine metallic dust and the hydro transmission fluid also contained a lot of fine metallic dust. JD DTAC recommended a transmission fluid change on my tractor at 50 hours instead of the much longer interval mentioned in the manual AND they also issued a much larger hydraulic fluid filter. This is my experience and does not necessarily relate to your situation with your 4100 which was manufactured by Japanese workers in Japan instead of the JD workers in Augusta, GA. There have been several postings about metallic contamination in the 4200+ in the compact tractor forums, but I have never seen any postings about metallic contamination in the 4100 Deeres. I can purchase a 1510 compact diesel tractor(low hours), 4x4, turf tires, Bush Hog front loader, 5' blade for $7910. Is this a good deal ? I have 17 acres with a lot of hills and slopes. Is this tractor up to most tasks. Also, I don't like the turf tires and was wondering what would be approx cost to replace all tires and wheels with R4. Thanks, <br> Dan

Hi Chris! I was wondering if you had considered the John Deere 790 ? Its just a hair bit bigger in fiscal size than the 4100, But has 30 motor HP and 25 PTO HP.It is a stick and not a hydro drive but is avalible in 4 wd and power steering for $10,995 . Its front end loader the model 70 lifts more than the loader of the 4100 and I think the 3 point hitch has more lift too! I bought mine a few months ago and LOVE IT! I have the 70 loader and 7 backhoe . When the backhoe is off I drag a 6' grader blade with ease, or drive a JD 506 bushhog. I also have a John deere 950 which is about the fiscal size of the 990 and the 4600 except it only has 27 pto HP . The 790 gives me the power of the 950 . and the handling of a compact. It's GREAT!

I started out with a JD 755 20hp,4x4. it weighed just under 2000 LBS. with turf's. it had no problem with a 50" tiller. tilling plowed ground I needed the loader for extra weight, but no problem. It pulled a 5' disc and a 1-14" moldboard plow. it handled the disc fine (with loader on) I could plow 6" deep without any problems unless the top of the ground was loose or very trashy. no chains either. you will be fine.

Thanks for the input. My manual states that I can adjust the rear tread width from 51 inches to 75 inches. Therefore, I should be able to get the chains to fit. The rims on the 4500/4600/4700 are bolted not welded.

I put chains on my NH 1320 this winter and I agree...what a difference. My tractor is 4wd with turfs and front loader. I ordered the chains from www.tirechains.com; they have resonable prices. When I received the chains the fronts fit with some minor lenght modifications. The rears would not fit due to an interference between the inner side chain and the ROPS. There is about an inch of clearance at the closest point between the tire side wall and ROPS; of course, this is exactly where the side chain was positioned. After some study of the problem I realized that chains could still be mounted if the side chains rode higher on the sidewall near the shoulder radius.

I ended up returning the rears and ordering side chains, cross chains, cross chain hooks and a chain tool (like a giant pliers) to make custom chains. I built a pair in an afternoon and they fit and work great. I originally built them with 4-link cross chain spacing but have recently ordered more cross chains to make them 2-link spacing for a smoother ride. The 4-link digs just fine but I think the 2-link will make a large difference to the ride.

Moral of the story is don't be dicouraged if pre-made chains won't fit. With a little study you can probably make your own custom set for about the same price - although the tool is about $75. Just make sure your side chains are not too high such that the chains could come off the tire.

Right you are, Anthony. Wheel weights are great for traction and stability, but they don't do much of anything to counterbalance a loader. For that you need weight behind the rear axle.

I do not know if any of you JD 4000 series fans make it over to the Yahoo discussion board or not(not a lot of activity there),but there is a guy over there that used to work for JD in some position,that posts notes and advice that seems to be very knowlegable.He goes by the name of Doctor Deere.I will post on yahoo and tell him about this board if does not already know.<br>Regards again<br>Hillbilly

I agree! I am a dealer in Connecticut and I love selling those Leinbach rakes. They are inexpensive and built better than most of the name brand rakes.

Jim, I agree with you. I have R4 tires on my 4100 and my lift arms would hit when raised all the way up. I adjusted the links and the arms from narrow to wide adjustment but it didn't help much. I called the dealer and he suggested turning the tires out. It made a hudge difference. I have plenty of clearence. The tractor is much more stable with the loader and it's alot easier to clean the rear end of your tractor. I have several attachments and the pin widths are different on all of them. Turning the tires out makes attaching much easier.

I just got a quote for a 4400 hst,mfwd,less mid pto, r4's,430 loader, folding rops,61" bucket w/ bucket level indicator..All for 19970 !!!! I live in Ks around KC..If that deal holds up I will try to buy at the end of the year. That makes the mid mower set up a bit high to me.Just my two cents worth but i have been looking at JD 4400's a lot lately. The hydrualics on these machines seem to be far better than any of the other colors

I guess 'PTO cover' is the same thing I call a 'PTO shield'--a metal housing above the shaft. I don't get a connection between a ROSP and PTO shield either. However, I've never really looked a folding ROSP bar. Maybe some part of the lower mechanism goes inboard from the bar and swings up through the area where the shield is located. Seems a bit far-fetched, but maybe. Of course, manufacturers are supposed to be safety-oriented. It also seems far-fetched that a new tractor would be designed so a shield couldn't be used, or that a new tractor would be supplied without one. Don't know, something else is probably going on.

Al, check with an RV dealer for trailer shocks. Most towable campers don't have them but they are a semi-popular add on for improved ride and handling. Hope this helps, Rob.

The particular tractor may have been a Kubota. As I recall several people thought the switch design, or its location, was poor. Apparently, the PTO switches were prone to failure. It might be worth digging into the archives to see if they were talking about a Boomer.
