A while back I seen a picture of a JD farm tractor with a JD loader on it ( I'll try to explain it). The bucket cylinders had linkage that went back to the main post of the loader. What this did was kept the bucket in the same possion as it was raised up or down. When the bucket is full you have to curl down the higher you go so your load don't come over the top of the bucket. It was a self leveling type of design that pay loaders and dozers (with buckets) have been useing for a long time.

Thought I pick up on Bird's comment that his loader lift and dump work at the same time but not the lift and curl. First thing to know is that I'm guessing about some of it. Maybe somebody who really knows this stuff will comment. As far as I know, oil flow is continuous in open centred systems, and line pressures are around 100#. Pressure is developed when a valve is actuated, which closes the centre and diverts oil to a cylinder. Valves are hooked in series, so the first valve in the line that is actuated gets all the pressure, and later valves are disabled, or nearly so. In a conventional system, only one function at a time operates, and the valve nearest the inlet on a SCV assembly takes priority. In my system, the rear hydraulic circuit is first, and when it's in use, neither the loader nor the 3ph operate. There a 'however' here, although. When a double-action cylinder receives pressure and moves, oil on the other side of the piston has to have a return path. In a two hose system, that oil would be forced into the return line on the other side of the closed centre. As such, some pressure would be developed if a later valve in the line was closed, which would allow limited operation of several functions. If one of these functions was a regenerative circuit, which are often used in loader dump circuits, the dump might work reasonably well. Regenerative circuits require pressure but little oil flow. That might explain why a lift and dump might work at the same time, but not a lift and curl.

However, I believe that in 3-hose power beyond systems, the oil pushed out of an operated cylinder does not use the open centre flow return line. The third hose provides an independent return path to the sump. So, the above idea to explain how a lift and dump might work simultaneously doesn't wash, and I believe 3-hose systems are now fairly standard. An alternative idea is that the input to a regenerative circuit uses special passages within the SCV assembly, which are fed directly from the inlet section. In such an arrangement, it wouldn't make any difference which centre in the SCV assembly was closed, the regenerative circuit always would get pressure as long as one centre was closed. This last idea is guesswork on my part, maybe it's correct or maybe somebody will offer a better explanation. Even if my guess is wrong, I hope this note help demystify hydraulics a bit for somebody. Anyway, my best guess is that Bird's loader dump is a regenerative circuit while curl is conventional.

In replying to Todd re snowblower, I went to the thread on 12-24-00 entitled "Best Snowblower" and tried to highlight the url in the floating window that has the opened thread on it in order to "cut" the url(control-c) in order to paste it on the reply today. Nothing happens except to move the window around abit. How can you cut and paste a specific thread on this site? I cruised the menu above and don't find an answer. Any help is appreciated

Craig, I've grown up in the landscape business and have seen guys come and go. They have new fancy equipment, and a nice new truck, a couple years later it's all for sale. My advice is to buy used equipment at auction if possible and upgrade as money permits. This is not a get rich quick business but it is a very fun and enjoyable business for me and my father. Thanks for the info everyone, I hope it also answered Randys question also. As soon as my local dealer can find a snowblower i think i will get it. I have 900 feet of gravel driveway not including parking or turnaround areas and it seems everytime it snows, the bucket seems to be getting smaller ? I think I am ready for a snowblower.

RE: eye bolts in the floor.

The guy we bought from (he built the pole barn) was a car nut & had 4 "V" shaped plates in the floor (I think they are standard for auto body shops) that he used for frame straightening. If the idea is for straightening things, it is better/stronger than eye bolts and is flush with the floor.

turfman, I've noticed several of them sitting on a dealer's lot for quite awhile now, and keep thinking I'll stop and look, but every time I'm by there, I decide I don't have time today. Somewhere I read that they're the same as the Boomers (since the Case-IH-New Holland merger) but that some of the options on the Boomers are not available on the Case (don't know yet whether that's a fact).

Mickey, your question isn't specific enough. The shop manual can be great for helping you understand how everything works (if you care and don't already know), most routine service is covered in the owner's manual, but if you ever have to repair anything, the manual can tell (and show) you how to do it. Of course, if you only use the tractor and let someone else do all the service, maintenance, and repairs, then the manual is probably not worth the cost to you.

Happy to be corrected, and also happy that my impression was on the conservative side. Yes, I don't like side hills either. When I first got my back hoe, I pondered over one safety instruction--'When on a side hill, always swing the bucket to dump on the up hill side.' It took awhile for the idea to settle in, and then came the 'Oh Yeah, got It' flash!

Thanks a lot for all of the good responses and lots of things to consider. I have talked to the Great Bend people and this is what I have been able to determine. The JD 410 loader for the JD4100 has a lift capacity of 875 pounds, while the Great Bend GB220 loader has a capacity of 810 pounds. The GB has about a 6" higher lift. All other specs seem very comparable. The JD410 loader detaches and parks in under 5 minutes with pins (no tools). The GB220 requires about 10 minutes to detach and park and requires the removal of 2 bolts. Otherwise, the Great Bend has an excellant reputation for toughness and durability. One comment I have to make is I am very impressed with the prompness and helpfulness of the GB staff. They didn't bad mouth the competition either, just gave me the facts and said that both would serve me well. One small thing: GB custom paints the loader to match any brand of tractor so that they don't stick out like a sore thumb. I have decided to ask the dealer (who sells both loaders)if he could demonstrate attachment and removal of both loaders on a JD 4000 series tractor, and see if the slight ease of the Deere is worth the extra money. The other thing I'm going to check is if the GB loader mounting frame portion that stays permanently attached to the tractor, will in any way conflict with my JD mid-mount mower. Well, I just received a more firm price quote and I guess that the difference is actually $600. The quotes I have are: JD410 ($2800 installed) and GB220 ($2200 installed). Both of these prices exclude the SCV valve and joystick, since I already have the factory installation of these.

An inspector told me that grounds don't last forever--at least in the sandy acid soil around here. He said that the utility did some research and found that the life expectancy of steel rods and plates can be as short as five years. Anyway, 'tingles' aren't normal and may indicate inadequate grounding, even if the original wiring and design was good. I can only sympathize with any dairy cattle subjected to a poorly grounded operation.

Mike, I saw a TC35 yesterday with the Woods loader on it. The only difference would be the contour shape that is notible with the new loaders from NH. Woods offers the quick attach bucket and I believe all the skid steer attachments from woods will adapt to this loader. So if the cosmetics don't bother you I would consider the woods loader over the NH. I think NH is missing the boat on this one also.---Cliff
