On another thread I ran across Jeff and Norm debating the virtues of new vs used tractors. The point was made that good condition used compacts were priced close to the same dollar as new ones. Now I'm curious....If the price is that close, who buys the used ones? Are low hour used ones more reliable than new? Is there really anyone out there who would rather have a used machine at 10% off rather than a new one?<br>

I didn't think you could go wrong with any of the tractors that you looked at. Congratulations on your new "beast". That green color is sure easy on the eyes, isn't it?

From the pictures I see at various manufacturers, a subsoiler looks like what we call a "middle buster" around here. If I was to design an anchor for a compact tractor it would look a lot like a subsoiler.... :-)
I'm saying is that you may find it hard to pull. One thing that really lightens up the pulling is o search for the kind of subsoiler that has the tooth mounted to the tool bar in such a way that it can wiggle side to side an inch or so as well as fore and aft.

Michigander, I looked at your post under Kioti thread, found it interesting. I'll look into Kioti DK45. But I'm hesitant due to lack of Kioti talk in my area, and my profession takes me to scores of farms/farmers. That in itself, however, can be overlooked if the tractor is new to the scene and promises a reliable service network. I came into the compact market closed-minded, had to have a Deere. My mind got opened up in a hurry after I found I could almost rip the fender off a 4600 just by getting on it. Then found the loader joystick crammed into my average-sized thigh due to poor location, presumably because JD couldn't locate the joystick on the weak fender (the "bad design" domino effect). Then all the bad JD compact posts (MFWD scuffing, etc). My JD dealer is a great softball friend, but I couldn't pull the $26K trigger for all these JD mistakes. Too bad for us both. Would take a new 4000-Ten series with these mistakes fixed to get me back to a JD compact (love bigger JDs, no problem!). Kubotas, great tractors, my eyes just can't take the color. Suppose I could paint it. New Hollands, after sitting on a TC in protest to the JD 4600, fell in love. But find the "option discrimination" against gear-drive TC's distasteful. Working on that. No perfect tractor on the market, personal preferences differ. But sure wish they (NH and the rest) would realize that a good bunch of us "Boomers" can darn well afford any compact options they can throw at us, gear drive or otherwise, if they'd give us the buying opportunity.

I have a JD 4300 with a Lorenz model 530 snow blower, 66" , 520#
Price: $2,084, $50crating, $130 freight from Benson Mn. to Medford, OR.This unit has paddles vs the auger. Less likely to distort, bend, and the wet snow is no problem. I installed a longer arm to turn the chute, using a 1/2 inch socket swivel. The shoes that controls the distance between unit and ground are the key to controlling picking up rocks. I replaced the round dudes that come with the unit. After various choices I found that large surfaces work best. 12" x 24", the ends at 2" are bent at 42 degrees. I set up the shoe very close to the unit, very little ground clearance. The shoe is forward of the unit by only the amount of the bend.
I finally can plow , leaving very little snow, and not spraying the 3/4" minus rock with the snow.

Sorry to hear you and your father inlaw had problems with a power king tractor. I have one with a 56" front blade, 33" tiller, and a 60" belly mower. The only thing I had to do on it, in 27 years, was reline the clutch plate. Otherwise never had a bit of trouble with it at all. Just hope the kubota B2400, I just bought, can measure up to the power king. My son wants me to sell it because of a shortage of space, but I guess that will set around in the way. Don't think I want to part with it.

I will mainly be using the blade for some grading and dirt and gravel moving. Snow removal will probably be the biggest thing. I always figured it was better to have a little bit more than you needed than to not have enough when you did. Also I figured if I trade up in size I would already have an adequate blade. I'll have to see about blade dimensions since the dealer who sells them is located 150 miles from home.

My experience with Curtis snowplows is the mounting tabs are NOT welded to the frame, but shipped loose. This isn't to say they can't be ordered ready to pin on, just that I have never seen it.

My grandfather has an L305 Kubota with a worm front axle stub & knuckle. We're trying to either buy a replacement part or heck a whole front axle if we can find one. hey guys, i have a jd870 w/FEL and i move 750 lb and 1,000 lb round bales on the loader with homemade 4x4 wood forks that i bolt on. when loading i stab a roll with my 3 pt hay king spear and pick up a roll with the front forks. works great. i would not try to lift the rolls with the FEL and no counterweight on the 3 pt. go slow when moving and keep the load low to the ground and DO NOT turn fast.

Happy HolidaysI developed a oil leak around my front drive shaft comming out of the front drive axle reduction gearbox. ( below the transmission ). My question is can the seal ( if thats what the problem is) be changed from the out side of do i have to drop the box and replace from the inside?Thanks To All<br>Chris

I have a 400' drive and I have a JD 1050 with a 6' Schulte blower on the rear.I also have an 8' blade on the front so I can move snow in both directions. No matter which way I go it's a lot off fun.

Yep, my 3 gears plus reverse are synchro while the 4 ranges aren't. I'm glad for the synchro gears, because I don't think I could figure out how to double-clutch with the hand throttle set at PTO speed. I am certain that I'm no piker in the wind department myself. The only difference between your wind and my wind is that your wind usually blows stuff around (I learn things). Mine often is just too many words. I should have watched more John Wayne movies I guess. Of course, my wife probably thinks I am a John Wayne movie--plenty of sound, but just not very many discernable words.

The 790's are self bleeding and after changing the filter and adding the anti gel additive it ran just fine.I'm sure the 28degree temperture also helped.

I love my JD4100, but it'd be nice to have some instrumentation on it to let me keep an eye on things. Does anyone know if you can get temp and pressure gauges, either JD or aftermarket stuff, for the 4xxx series? Or will automotive type work? Thanks all. Scott in New Hampshire.
