Bird, both of mine have decompression levers. They work as you say, by holding the exhaust valve slightly open. You don't have to worry about the motor starting (or running) when the lever is pulled. They won't ever start when the compression is reduced by that amount. After all, a diesel is a "compression ignition" engine. If it doesn't compress then you have no fire at all.
There is one downside to the decompression levers, and that is that some people get into the habit of shutting the engine off with them instead the common method which is by pulling the throttle all the way to off. This is not a good practice. It doesn't seen to do much damage, but at the least it will end up stretching the decompression wires and levers. The thing that the manuals never seem to mention is that a decompression device is for holding a valve open BEFORE the engine is running. They are not built to open a valve against 500 psi of compression pressure! Rambling on....Turning a motor off is another way where diesels are unlike gasoline engines. On a gasoline engine you usually have the throttle set up so that all the way back on the throttle is the idle position and the engine is turned off by turning the spark off.. On a diesel, pulling the throttle all the way back cuts off the flow of fuel entirely and lack of fuel - not lack of ignition - causes the engine to quit running.
I like to use the decompression for the first start of the day. Here is how to go about it:
With the throttle pulled fully to the OFF positon, pull the decompression lever and hold it decompressed and then crank the engine over with the starter. It will really wind up, but this is fine since there is no unbalanced load on the engine. Just hold it there. I let the starter run until the gauge shows a tiny bit of oil pressure, or the idiot light goes out, or about 5 to 10 seconds pass - whichever is first. But I am hoping to see oil pressure. The drain on the battery is low when I am doing this because it is being held decompressed with the lever. As soon as you see any indication of oil pressure, quickly release the decompression lever and push the throttle to a little over half open - all the while the starter is still running and the motor is still spinning. It is just not firing yet. Now as you let off the decompression lever and advance the throttle, the engine compression will slow the starter motor down at about the same time that the throttle is advanced and she should fires right up. Of course when it begins to run I immediately let off on the starter switch and back the throttle down to a high idle.
The neat thing about doing it this way is that you are prelubing the engine before it ever starts to run. And also if you do it that way you never have to try to crank a cold engine up to starting speed......you already have the engine spun up and all of its spinning energy is available to help the diesel to start.

Could that 7100 have two oil drain plugs like the book says my 2710 does? If only one was drained than a full re-fill would show you overfull and still dirty. Just a thought!

I stopped at my local motorcycle dealer and asked about these studs today. They're like a 1/4" hex head self-tapping screw with a blob of carbide on the head. They seemed to be about 85 cents apiece and could be ordered in quantities of 48. Question: they are available in lengths of from 1/2" to about an inch. Any suggestions on length appropriate for an ag tire? Not from the standpoint of puncturing the tire, but my concern is if they're too short could they pull or tear out?

Thanks to everyone for their help. After your input, the input of two John Deere dealers, and my own investigation, here is what I have determined.

1. The snowblower is working correctly.
2. The fact that it didn't blow snow 30 to 40 feet was due to:
a. snow conditions and moisture content
b. snowblower chute hasn't been lubricated (I picked up some JD "Slip-Plate" dry film lubricant graphite spray at the dealer.)
c. I wasn't going fast enough
d. The snow depth was marginal at 5-6 inches.
3. I confirmed that the fly wheel and auger are all working properly and do not slip.
4. I also confirmed that the fly wheel is spinning in the proper direction.
5. I was operating the tractor at the PTO engine rpm speed of 3200 +/-.
6. The snowblower was originally purchased at the same time the tractor was purchased new.

Thanks for your input. After I talked to the salesman, I knew I forgot to ask him about those things. So i will call and find out and let you know. Any thoughts of going with a TN55? I started pricing those units, but are a little too costly for me. Do you know of any other tractor boards? I recenly received anohter price for a TC45: 12x12 sync, R4 tires, foldable rops, delx. 3pt hitch, 16 LA w/ 72" bucket (not sure if it is hd) for $22,100. I got a price for the TN55 ($23,950.00 CASH)with basically the same set-up; 32LA loader w/ 72" bucket, ag tires, 16.9 gpm pump.

I bought a 60" Meteor this fall, with manual chute complete for list price of $1440 CDN - That's less than $1000 US given the current exchange. I plowed with a front blade for the last few years, and used the loader as well, and there is no comparison. The Blower is the way to go.

Added benefits - With the blower, you end up with NO banks and no piles of snow. The banks are a big issue in my area, as by end of winter, the drive is exactly the width of my plow blade and, being in a windy spot, the snow loves to blow right over the top and settle in the hole (On my drive!!##!!) so that I have to clear it all over again. With the loader your need to find a good spot to move the snow to, and in my case, unless I start at the back of the lawn, the pile gets too tall to reach the top!
With the blower, the "bank" is much wider and further away from my drive, avoiding the drifting issues.

The only downside is that with the blower the loose gravel is spread over a larger area, but my solution is to keep the blower about 2" off the gravel for the first couple of passes, packing down the snow into a solid layer. Works fine until we get a big thaw like this weekend.

Try an old set of chain harrows on the icy gravel, start with no additional weight at all and gradually add weight till the desired effect is obtained. In this manner you will scarify the ice without tearing up the gravel itself. The other thing that works well is a back-dragging a "York" rake, same deal start light and increase weight slowly, it can expensive (replacing tines) if you do it a lot, the odd time it is no problem. I have also seen snow plow blades made from the ends of 275 gallon oil tanks. You have to reinforce with angle iron and make a blade from flat iron. They work good. You just have to be careful cutting them up.

I've got a B2400 - great little machine. As the others have said, the 4-wheel drive engages/disengages by moving a lever on the right hand fender. I looked at the bi-speed when I bought mine a couple of years ago. After a long discussion with the dealer, I decided against it. As the dealer said, "It's just something else to possibly go wrong", although he admitted that he had never had to repair any. I drove tractors with and without and it seems to work pretty well but the hydro transmission makes it so easy and fast to back up to make sharp turns that I decided not to get the bi-speed. I suppose if you really had a need for it, lots of turns in 4-wheel drive or working in tight spaces, it might be useful but under normal circumstances I don't think it's necessary.

Your idea is definitely do-able. How well it works will depend upon your level of design and planning. Naturally the first thing you'll need is some sort of 3pt mounted platform. Next, ya gotta get that 540 RPM PTO up to the gen's rated speed. Chances are, you'll need approximately a 1 to 4 gearbox. NOT a 4 to 1! YA gotta increase speed not reduce. Your best bet may be to use a pully drive system rather than a gear. If for no other reason than cost. Otherwise, you'll spend just as much if not more than buying new.

Bird: Thanks for the note. I think that the pieces of this hydraulics stuff are falling together pretty well for me. With great restraint on my part, I'll stop commenting on hydraulics terminology. There will be future discussions on hydraulics, and I'll get a chance to see if I've gotten all the pieces together. I imagine that I will eventually be able to spend less time studying on it and more time doing it. In the meantime, I hope I've gotten to the point where some of my comments help people who are even more novice than I.

I own an older L-245DT. I know diesel engines are noisy but I can hear a loud ticking on top of the typical diesel knocking. Is this normal? The tractor only has 400 hours. I have never owned a compact and maybe I'm just paranoid.

To make the most of opportunities I am beginning to read more about the TC18/21. Am interested in a mid mound New Holland mower deck for it unless someone can make a case for an aftermarket deck. How easy/hard is it to put on and off from the TC18 ? What does it take to do it. Is it as easy and rugged as the JD 4100 deck ?

Are you saying that Massey wants more for their tractors than JD? This is going to make some of the JD marketing guys sad... :-) Also, did you try out any of the 4000 series? I'd be curious to hear what you thought about comparisons between the 4000 and 5000.
