Sounds to me like you are building a pretty good tractor anchor. Its working too! What do you run out of first? Traction or horsepower?

T-Rock-Thanks for your reply. My first NH product was a 1520, l995 vintage which I put 500 hours on and liked alot. I was interested in the new technology so my dealer made me a great deal on a 1530 that a local farmer bought just to pull a rear-mount mower to do his grass, then trades yearly. I thought the 1520 was adequate in power for my property and needs(10 acres of grass and pasture with occasional loader work and snow pushing) but the 1530 did not have the power the 1520 had. My friendly dealer made me another deal I thought was great(I think he likes to see me come to his shop) and I upgraded to the TC33D. For my minimal loader needs it's been adequate and the extra power took care of the problem areas I encountered with the 1530. I just turned 65 hours and have had no problems other than the bent lift arms which I didn't have on the 1520. I'd have saved $ sticking with the 1520 but I do like the "Boomer" otherwise.

Apparently there isn't anyone with an opinion on this subject. For future reference, there is, indeed a small amount of side play in the interface between the driveshaft yoke and the splined input shaft to the mfwd of the JD955. I was able to locate a new shaft, and compared the play in it,as compared to the play in the one on my tractor. Personally, I feel there is enough play to warrant a high pressure lubricant such as never sieze, but the service manual doesn't call for anything.

Since I haven't been part of the discussion, I guess this is just idle curiosity. The last regulator I changed was on a '53 Chevy (6V -GRD). I recall there were instructions for polarizing something, (the regulator I thought) and the instructions did mention 'flashing the field.' Now, I'm just curious what it was that I did.

<br> <br>----------------------------------------------------------------------------This is a question for Murf or any of you golf course experts out there.I've noticed while playing golf lately,(i find the time once in a while)that on short holes where you get a lot of divots,they place pails filled with a mixture to fill in your divot.It appears to be mostley sand and i assume has seed mixed in.Since i occationaly take a divot with my mower,i thought it might be handy to have a container of this on the truck.Is this a prepared mix you can buy or do you just mix up your own.<br> <br>

I can't help much with tire specifics, except to note that you may not be happy with ag tires for lawn mowing. I have turfs myself, but some people have good luck with industrials. An owners manual probably gives standard tire sets for ag and maybe other tire types as well. I don't know about all tractors, but ag and turf tires for my Ford 1710 take different wheels. So, if you're ordering a tractor new, it's a good idea to be fairly certain what tires you want. It's probably not just a matter of changing the tires if you don't like them.

I haven't needed chains with my turf tires for blowing snow on frozen gravel. Sometimes I could use more traction when pushing snow around with the loader, but the problem is manageable, and I can always add more ballast to gain traction. I believe that chains on the back work, if needed, but sometimes steering is a problem. Chains on the front help with traction for both pulling and steering. Some people use chains on the front only, but many people think that is hard on 4wd trains.

Lack of clearance is a problem sometimes encountered when fitting chains on tires. Turf tires, being the widest of tire types, have the most problems with clearance. If you're thinking about chains, especially on turf tires, it's probably a good idea to ask a dealer what chains will work with a particular tire.

Here's another idea. I already had a 3pt. hitch subsoiler (ripper) so I took out the steel shank, bolted on a bumper hitch attachment I had (takes a square tube - the kind used in a receiver) and used a straight insert with a hitch ball attached to it. Of course, I already had these parts on hand so all I did was drill and tap a couple of holes. If you weld, you could get some scrap steel and make something similar for a few dollars. The big advantage over the draw bar method is the 3pt hitch will elevate the trailer tongue and I can move two or three trailers around without ever cranking or folding the trailer tongue jack.

I sorta remembered what the over running clutch was suppose to do (it has been yrs since i have used the mower and tractor though), but thought it also may serve double duty as a slip clutch.. I was slightly confused hehe

I also have the same problem, The noise is only heard when letting the clutch out in a reverse geer. The tractor is a 4300, 2000 year model. I have around 250 hrs on it now and the noise just keeps getting worse. I called my John Deere dealer about the problem and has made an appointment to work on it next week. After talking to him about the problem, he has no idea of what is causing the noise. If anyone else has had this problem and had it fixed or know what is cousing it, PLEASE respond. Other than the noise, I have had no other problems with the tractor.

Boy do I feel dumb. I have also been toting 5 gal containers back and forth, to and from town. I didn't even think about the 1000 gal tank I walk past (or over) everyday. I always fill my home heating oil tank every August, and never have had less than 400 gals when filled. Thanks for the idea - a great solution for fueling my tractor.

I had time today to dive into the problem. I found the neutral switch located in the flywheel bell housing under the tractor frame. It is a micro switch device which is actuated by a roller on a lever that centers itself in a "V" shaped grove in the lever plate. This plate rotates in responce to foward/reverse pedal movement. When the pedals are neutral the roller is in the bottom of the "V" and depresses the neutral switch. After I determined the nature of the beast and how it functioned I found that the switch was not being depressed far enough to make the circuit. I loosened the two screws that hold the switch and move it towards the roller. There is not much adjustment in doing this but it was enough to get the switch to make when in the neutral position. Note: the switch is very hard to get to.
Good luck to anybody who tries to make the adjustment. I do not know if this is the factory fix, but it worked for me.

MJB, thanks for the discussion on direct and indirect injection. You might have cleared up opne mystery for me... My wife has a Ford F-250 Direct Injection Turbo diesel, and I had though that they were indirect injection before the turbo version - although I am not sure about this.
One reason for the indirect injection might be the noise reduction. I have two of the US imported compact Yanmars. One is direct injection and the motor has a distinct "diesel knock" at all speeds. This is normal for the engine...and in fact is almost a "clang" at some RPMs. The other Yanmar is indirect injection and is much quieter. Instead of a noise like a hammer on an anvil, it fires with a sort of rolling chuckle and purr. Not quiet, but not like the other one at all. The direct injection is much more fuel efficient in spite of the noise.
