Terry, my dealer just returned my 4200 w/ new axle. I ditto your comments concerning the improvement. However, I am certain the front wheels turn further to the right than to the left. Have you or anyone else noticed this or is mine just in need of adjustment?

Hi Halsey! Thanks for the reply. Yes I do realize that a larger bucket does not mean a heavier load. I would want a larger bucket for snow, leaves, shoveling dirt, etc. The 48" bucket that I have now I can fill up with 3 dumps from my grass catcher from my 21" walk behind Honda! I just like the idea of using the bucket like a lawn cart so that I don't have to empty it by hand. I thought that maybe an after market retailer might have a bucket to used for something like grain, manure, etc. Thanks for your input. C. David Williams

JD 13 series cutters are junk. They will only hold up to cutting grass (not an tougher than a finish mower). Check out Bushhog brand.

I also find that most of the trees cut by the shredder die out.
I have seen little problem driving over previously cut trees. The stump
left usually is very loose in the ground and bends over when run over again.
The mesquite does tend to return as a small bush but will stay small if
you mow oftern. If you really want to get serious about eliminating the
mesquite shred them and spray the stump with a mixture of Roundup & diesel.
Radical but it does get rid of them.

Mike, I've twisted an ankle just a little bit a couple of times stepping down from the tractor, but fortunately never enough to be worse than a little soreness for a day or two, but your message reminded me of a neighbor who has an Oliver 1755 (two step "ladder" down from the platform) and a couple of years ago, he had to go through a gate, putting out hay, and didn't want the cattle to get through, so he got down, chased the cows away from the gate, opened it, hurried to get back on the tractor and through the gate, then hurrying to get down and back to close the gate, he fell off and twisted a knee very badly. Not only did the cows all get through, but he was laid up for a week (so I got to take care of putting out the hay for awhile for him). Just a reminder; be especially careful getting off if you're in a hurry.

A neighbor who is moving is selling his JD 855 Tractor (not sure what year it is) that has 602 hours w/#704 Loader, 261 Finish Mover, 5' Bushhog, Post Hole Digger with 2 augers 6" & 10" - all of which is kept outside & not covered. Is $10,000 are reasonable price for all this.

I have a JD 513 cutter that I bought this spring. The 413 through 613 are light duty cutters. I have under ten hours on mine and I was marveling over the weekend at how beat up I've managed to get it in that amount of time. The biggest problem is that the metal in the rear is getting bent outward from snagging on stumps and rocks. There are also many dents in the sides from bits of rock flying into them. It looked heavy enough to me when I bought it, but now I wish I'd bought a medium duty cutter. Keep in mind that it's getting pretty heavy use for a light duty cutter; I routinely cut rocks and brush with it. My rear acreage is a depleted gravel pit that now has 30 years of growth on it which hides rocks quite nicely. The front pops them up out of the ground to be processing into crushed stone.

Your loose shaft is not causing the problem. I have B6000 that runs fine with a lot of looseness in the shaft. You need to look at all the common diesel engine issues. They are really simple. You get fuel and air--they run. I would suggest first making sure the glow plugs work. These engines require a lot of preheating to get started. If they are working, check for clogged injectors. Are you old to enough to remember when Chrysler product cars had a positive ground? I can't remember when they changed to a negative ground, but the early 50s had the positive ground (I'll probably always remember because I installed a new battery backwards in one).

I spent enough time last winter sorting out the chains stuff that I realized that I got through most of the winter without them OK. I'm using a Ford 1710 (4wd) with turf tires. I plow a little, but mostly use a blower on frozen gravel. I don't know if I'll get chains (all wheels) or not.

A blower that is wide enough to cover your tire tracks is a good idea. Manufacturer specs, often available on web pages, usually provide recommended minimum HP, which a good guide.

3ph blowers are easier to find and there are more alternatives to front mount types where mounting requirements to the frame, loader arms and mid-pto attachments can be fairly specific to the tractor. Some manufacturer, other than JD, probably makes something that fits, but I don't know. Maybe somebody else will suggest a particular after-market manufacturer.

Myself, I have a 3ph blower. I use the loader quite a bit to stack, shove piles around, and clear in places where the blower won't work well. Learning to drive backwards was preferable to giving up the loader during the winter or having to change back and forth.

I'll add a couple of bits to an engine concept discussion. I'll probably learn something, and I've always got plenty I should learn.

I think the idea that HP = torque x rpm is a rough approximation. The idea is that HP is a measurement over time. In that concept, the more times the same force (torque) is applied over a particular duration, the higher the HP. A small force applied more times than a large a large one can equal more HP. Therefore, more bangs per second (higher RPM) equals higher HP.

However, the simple idea of HP = torque x RPM treats the force of ignition as instantaneously applied and of zero duration, which is a simplification of the physics. Burning a fuel charge takes time. The pressure builds in a cylinder due to engine compression and fuel burning. Force is being applied more or less continuously on a power stroke until the exhaust valve opens. Of course, all this happens while the piston is moving. Ignition in gas engines usually occurs before the piston reaches top dead centre. I don't know about diesels.

What all this means is that how diesel fuel burns, compared to gasoline, makes a difference in both the torque and HP of diesel and gasoline engines. Here's where I've got to speculate, since I'm not an engineer. I suspect that diesel engines apply more force over a greater part of the power stroke than gas engines. The much higher compression ratio of diesel engines means that the atmospheric charge 'unwinds' over a greater distance. In addition, the heaver hydrocarbons in diesel fuel may burn slower, which would mean that cylinder pressures take longer to build up but are maintained for a longer time over the power stroke.

If all this is true, diesels should have an inherent advantage in producing power at low RPM's. However, it is true as Roger notes that gasoline can be designed (tuned) to for power at low RPM's, but they may not be very efficient. Low RPM gas engines use long intake and exhaust manifolds, mild cam durations, small ports, heavy flywheels etc.

The local Kubota dealer showed me a 6' power angle blade (model F5B6P)that would attach to a L3000 tractor. This is done with a quick attach setup that is between the bucket and the end of the lift arms of the loader. This looks like a good setup and I was interested if anyone has used this equipment.

I'm considering buying a 4 inch chipper for use with my John Deere Model 670 compact tractor. I've gathered information about the Bear Cat Model 73454, the Danuser Model 18G, the Patu DC40MF, and the Valby CH140. These are all manual feed chippers and range in price from $2855 to $3400. Now I have stumbled across information about a chipper made in China and sold by Bolton www.boltonpowerequip.com/chippers.html It's list price is $3,395 WITH AUTOMATIC FEED!! Does anybody know anything about this chipper? I'm leary of Chinese products but wonder if acquiring parts might be less of a concern with a chipper than a tractor, for example.

I own a Massey 1010, 1986 model 4wd with about 200 hrs. I have had good luck with the tractor and haven't had to purchase many parts. After reading the post on this board about the 1030 I was wondering if anyone could tell me about their experence with the 1010 or its Hino counterpart as far as reliability, parts availabilty ect. I plan on keeping this tractor for a very long time, unless I can't get parts or there is some problem with the model I am not aware of. any info at all will be greatly appreciated. Thanks .............

Don't know myself, but here are two sites that might be of some help. Each have discussion forums, but they aren't very active. Asking a dealer is another possibility.

The tractortips site also has specs for many tractors, but a lift capacity for the 8N isn't given. I note that the specs also indicate that the 8N doesn't have a Cat I 3ph. The 8N does have a 3ph, but not to the Cat I standard.

I asked my dealer the same question, and the answer is a bit qualified. For example: Does capacity mean the weight on the arm ends that stalls the hydraulics? The maximum weight the lift structure is design for? Or the maximum load that may be lifted 'safely?'

I'm not sure there's a standard definition for 3ph capacity. However, I'm guessing that tractors would be engineered so the hydraulics would stall before breaking the hitch. Similarly, I think it would be bad design if capacity means stalling the hydraulics. I think capacity primarily is a safety idea. What can be lifted without tipping the tractor up? If so, then the question becomes whether the capacity with or without front ballast?

I imagine that manufacturers are reluctant to actually put a number on capacity due to the variety of 3ph implements and uses. For example, I think the capacity of my Ford 1710 is 1875 lbs. I have pallet forks that weigh 650 lbs. themselves. If I took the hitch capacity and subtracted the implement weight, I might think I could lift about 1200 lbs. on the forks. However, the forks extend 3' beyond the hitch arms, and there is no way I would put anywhere near 1200 lbs. on the forks, even with ballast. Weight carried beyond the end of the hitch arms reduces the weight that may be safely carried.

I don't think too much about weight myself since I often don't know exactly how much something weighs. I think I'm over capacity if the steering is very light. Then, I add front ballast, usually a loader bucket of gravel. I have to trust that the tractor is engineered so that, if I keep adding ballast, the hydraulics will stall before anything breaks.
