In my experience, the more weight on the front of the chain, the better. I use
a 4 foot section of well casing. It's about 10" dia, and weighs about 80lbs.
Anything less and the front of the chain link lifts off the ground as you pull it.
A couple of 4x4 pieces on the back end keep the fence straight. Definitely low
tech, but it works well. Be sure to level first with a blade or harrow, as
this rig will NOT fill in any hollows, or remove any humps, but will smooth the
surface to the existing contours. If your lawn is on a slope, it is a good idea
to scratch the surface at 90degrees to the slope prior to spreading seed. Stops
it running off with the rain. A leaf rake works well. And don't water the ground or the seed before you roll!!!

Ron, I purchased a 2wd '79 JD-950 w/75 loader in excellent condition for $7500 (western NY). I would estimate 4wd and '85 model would bump the price up considerably. MY 1998 Farm Equipment Guide Blue book mentions 4wd 950 pricing auction pricing as: Low: $4410, High: $9592, Avg: $7121. Hope this information helps and Good luck on the acquisition. Regards Mark

Does your brother's tractor have front wheel drive? Mine has. What breaks and what use is the tractor put to? Does he use a front loader? Tire type and ballast? What about the blown engines? Is it the head or something else? What are the symptoms? Are the tractors early or late models? Any information would be appreciated.

I love my 855 as well. It's a very capable machine (for a homeowner) considering how gentle it is on the turf. I'm also impressed with how quickly I can mow my 2 acres with the 60" mid-mower, given all the obstacles and 180 degree turns. It competes with my Gravely walk-behind for mowing speed. Which hoe do you have? I'm shopping for one myself.

My Kubota B8200HST, when I traded it off, was ten years old and had almost 1000 hours on it and it had, during that length of time, required the total replacement of a tachometer cable ($9.95) and ran as good as the day it was purchased new. My present John Deere 4400HST got all the way up to 8 hours before the PTO locked up and required repair and 100 hours before the transmission required replacement. While the Kubota did not set any real records, I can still take a great deal of pride in its quality and dependability during its ten years of proud ownership. The JD may have set a record of a different type. Mike S.

I have built the model 808 3pt. version of backhoe for my John Deere 1070 tractor. I have dug about 10 large pine stumps up with it so far and cleaned out my creek for irragation. It has worked great.

I have a cub 7275 with the pretty much std 1-3/8 6 spline rear 540 PTO and I just picked up a Bush Hog Bush Hog (made by the company of the name). It also has a 1-3/8 6 spline shaft. I need to get a driveshaft for this.I have the Quality farm& country catalog, and talking to a dealer, he said I should go after no smaller than a series 14N driveshaft, which is compatible with the Waltersheid 2300 or the Bondioli&Pavesi 4 series.Here is my dilemma: The 14N shaft does not come with the implement yoke and ujoint. I need to use either a tractor end slip collar or quick link...which pushes my cost to over $240, however in the quality catalog they list 'metric' driveshafts (waltersheid or bonioli) for about $100 complete, but using a implement end shaft yoke (which I can replace)'SAE' drive shafts are square tubing or rectangular tubing, 'metric' driveshafts are round tubing with 2 or 3 'nubs' - does anyone use what could be a metric driveshaft with good results? for the price I'd be dum to not look at them. All of the SAE driveshafts are 48" compresses which means I have to cut, the metrics apparently you can get in 5-6 sizes to fit the compressed/extended ranges....any help is appreciated.

I have Kubota 3010 and and have no trouble pulling a 6' 20 disc with 16" discs. It works great although I have only used on slight grades but I would think it would do well on hills as well. Good luck!

Got to use the 48 backhoe on my 4400 quite a bit last weekend and I'll share my experiences. (PS: Chris, I see that on another thread that you got your 48 backhoe, please add your experience to this thread also.) First off: the 48 backhoe is very impressive! My most recent backhoe experiences were with a Kubota B20 and a Taguchi mini-excavator, but the 4400/48 backhoe combination is in a league above those machines. I spent 4 hours or so digging rocks out of some trails and an old pasture that is slowly being converted to a "lawn". These rocks ranged from "breadbox" sized to "6500 watt generator" sized and the soil is mostly clay. The 48 backhoe with 18" bucket handled these pretty easily. I found that the servo controls were good, not great, but smooth enough at low rpm and slight motions. The hoe certainly has plenty of digging force. Next time out I will be tackling some fresh tree stumps... then I will really know how good this backhoe is! I also used the loader bucket with toothbar to clear some brush and dead limbs from along a stone wall fence. The toothbar works great in this application too, although I would really love to get hold of a brush-brute for removing the 1-2" saplings and juniper bushes. Other interesting learning: the fuel gauge on my 4400 was showing about 1/4 tank when I ran out of fuel. Bone dry. Obviously the fuel guage doesn't work right even though it registered properly when I added 5 gallons of fuel. However, the self-bleeding fuel system on the 4400 Yanmar engine worked as advertised! It took about 30 seconds of cranking (I only cranked it 10 seconds at a time, then let the starter cool) and the engine fired back up. This is a very nice feature, as anyone who has ever gone through the messy pain-in-the-rear job of priming a diesel fuel system will attest.

David - Hi,(& Semper Fi) I've heard that the dealers get a rebate of sorts if they keep their warranty costs down to a certain percentage of sales, so, you either have to find a good dealer (I certainly did), or keep in touch via this board. I have questioned other dealers about the scuffing, and they too appear ignorant of the issue. I would imagine this guy knew about the problem but wouldn't admit it. As a matter of interest, my dealer had only two complaints (and replacements) out of 35 sold last year! By the way, I traded a Kubota for the Deere (I also upgraded the model)- more comfort, hydro, etc. Jack

Brian, click on the link below and look up the 3 tractors and their specs there. I can't vouch for the accuracy of their information, but there's a lot there. They indicate the L275 was made from '81-85, 23 PTO hp, the 1510 from '83-86, 20 PTO hp, and the 234 from '82-84 with 18 engine hp (PTO hp would be less). As to which one's the best buy, I don't know.

I did bracket 'oligopoly' for anybody who would split a fine point. Same theory. Guess they teach pure competitive models in Econ 101. Market distortions due to departures from the competitive model must come later.

Anyway, I rather think about my tractor, which makes me happy, then Economics, which doesn't. From me, more about tractors and less about theory: Hope everybody else is happy with their tractor too. I'd just rather see more corporate energy go into engineering and less into organizational overhead. I'm not sure that all the effort that goes into things like producing or preventing the latest corporate takeover does much for product quality.

Just that Del over on tractorbynet mentioned there were some. I think my 1710 is a later model and should have any upgrades, but I'm going to check with my dealer anyway. I'll post a note if anything turns up.

Just reading this thread and wondering if you folks would write in an update on what you did. I am about to get a NH utility tractor (looking at the TNF and TNS) and want to run a PTO driven vac with a mower (necessary for the vac pickup).

David, have you taken these concerns to your Deere dealer? It would be interesting how they react, you might have all your questions answered and a new tractor. Any quality dealer will tell you how those problems have been solved and how they will deal with any future problems you might have. Good luck!

I received my 1070 today. Only 245 hrs. I was a little disappointed with the overall sheet metal cond.. There are rust bubbles under the faded paint in many spots. The paint just doesn't seem to be adhering very well either. Therefore, rust is evidently going to be a problem. Was this a problem for deere in the past? My JD750 seems to be better built in this department by a long shot w/ stronger sheet metal and better paint. The 1070's a 96' model with foam filled turfs, MFWD, cool draft features, no mid pto, but power steering! It has a great turning radius and the sync. shift seems to work fine. No more grinding gears. But.. I'm really still attached to my 750, and I am going to miss her. I can't afford both. Unfortunately the 1070's lift cap. both w/ loader and 3pth is a necessity for the next year or so. After that with only an acre or so to mow, I'll probably want a smaller tractor... I wouldn't bet on that last line. (I'll stop whining now).
