I don't know the year of the 336D but it is in good condition. It was used in a nursery and has about 1700 hours on it. It was maintained by the same mechanic since in was purchased. It currently doesn't have a loader on it but the mechanic who is selling it plans to put in on. I think the tractor by itself would be about $6200 and another $2800 to add a loader to it. Also I don't think it has a ROPS roll bar on it. Does this seem like a fair price?

I did lots of research on this awhile back. I ended up with a JD4100 and am very happy, but my decision was helped along by a factory sale that JD had going. I also looked at the New Holland TC-18 and the B-7300 and B-7500 Kubotas. Any of these I think I would be just as happy with. They're all well made and offer similar features and HP for about the same money. I also looked at a compact Massey-Ferguson awhile back. Seemed very smooth and well-made and cheaper than any of the rest, I don't know why these are not more popular. Just go with one of these brands and you can't go wrong. I would made your buy based on price and availability of parts/service in your area.

Good idea Murf. I'm actually real close and only need a couple of inches. I also thought about that too, but just posted to see if anyone had any other ideas. Sounds like ROPS removal is a hassle if not necessary.

Yes, I agree. I was suporised how much dirt I could push with the Ventrac. I have the 26.5hp diesel engine, and it has some torque!

I got mine from Lawn Care in Martindale, PA, (central pa).

Try out Steiner turf equipment also in Dalton Ohio, manufacturers of the the 25 year old turf tractor that will out perform any other tractor that size with about 30 different attachments that will hook up in less than 1 min. We have had steiners for the last fifteen years and they can't be beat. Hillside mowing is one of the steiners best jobs that can be done very easy and you feel safe. They also have powerbox rakes and terra rakes availableany many other attachments that you could use to do the job.I LOVE MY STEINER.

just received a bunch of pics on the front end. There is an "abominable snowman" after all. The design has a radius rod at the rear of the cylinder attaching both hubs. In my opinion it is similar to automotive steering.

Keith, you've got to wonder about Massey....They've been around forever, their tractors are as good as you'll find, you never hear about any problems with any of them, and the prices are less than some of the "off-brands". Every one who has one seems to be satisfied with it. Used ones rarely hit the market. But for some reason they just don't have the cultish following of JD or Kubota. Everyone knows the name, and Massey claims to be the number one selling brand world wide. If true, they have managed this without really igniting anyone's passion. I took the 1235-4 for a test drive a few months back and was impressed by how quiet it was, how handy all the controls were, and particularly how easy to get on and off. Everything worked perfectly. Visibility was great. The engine and transmission work fine. The fit and finish is top notch, and they seem to be nicely beefy where it counts. The dealer is a long time friend of mine, and he says that they are just as durable as a person could want. So why aren't they more popular? Personally, I think it's the wheels..:-)..I never did care for the look of that 4-spoke rear wheel...and the fronts look like garden tractor wheels to me. Then they go and paint them electric grey. They always have. Same color for 50 years. Nobody else paints their wheels grey, do they? I wonder if Massey knows about this??

I will probably be purchasing a 790 in the near future and will also be purchasing a finish mower. Most people I talk to say a 72" 3 spindle is about max for the 30 horses (25 PTO) but one dealer says he has a 90" 5 spindle (Woods?) that works perfectly. Wondering if anyone has any experience with this rig. Will it have enough power?

Charlie, please let me know of your experience as soon as you can? What attachments did you get? Do you have R4's on the front? I am trying to get the following question answered: In terms of strength and durability, is there any difference between the engine, transmission, and axels of the 7500 and the 2410. I don't think there is, but I have yet to speak to anyone who has actually torn one down for repairs. The same question/answer would apply to 7300 versus 2400. Any help you can give will be appreciated.

Well, I've had my Ventrac 4000 for over a week now, and I must say that I don't regret my decision at all. The workmanship on the tractor is great, the only initial problem I had was a leaky fitting on my slip scoop, and the local dealer picked it up, fixed it, and returned the tractor in one day!

I'm having a blast. THanks Jack for all the help. I'm sure that we will have a lot more conversation on the topic of Compact Tractors. you really pointed me in the right direction, I'm hooked!

Just to give you guys some information about how I am using my tractor, I live in the middle of Amish country in Lancaster county on 5 acres, surrounded by a dairy farm, and three others. I have a 60" mower deck that I use to cut 2.5 acres of grass, and a slip scoop that I can use for just about everything! This week, I was using it to move a pile of topsoil over 50' for spreading, and cleaning my nieghbor's horse stall, and then used it as a wheelbarrel that afternoon! (After I washed it out of course).

I'm really having a good time with this thing!

I wonder if anyone has used the foot pedal on the Ventrac 4000? It seems to me that this would free up the hand to work with just the implement attached up front, or the three point hitch? Has anyone used it? What did you think?

I also wonder if I could replace the forward/reverse with a joystick type of setup which would handle just the impleent up front. I then could use the foot pedal just for the movement.

Steveo, I ment that the 4200 pto set up is by wet disk clutch, not infulenced by the foot clutch. You push the lever and the pto is on, dont wory about the tractors motion, or the foot clutch, like on my fathers 3020 and 5020 or most hydrostatics. The 790 has a two-stage dry clutch, push it in half way the tractor motion stops, push it all the way and the PTO stops. My concern was the dry clutch setup on the 790. Any way I decided it was not a concern and put mony down on a 790. I will use the $1500 for the loader. The dealer said it would take three to eight weeks to get my 790, which ticked me off, but I have been waiting eight years for a compact, so what's a few weeks. Last week I sold my 8N which I used for pulling my 72" finishing mower. It will likely be about another four weeks before the grass starts to turn green here in the middle of Canada. To everyone using jPlan, thanks for all the excellent information, I will let you know when I get my 790.

I've had a B2400 for about a year now (practically same as B2410). The B2700 wasn't available when I was looking. Don't know much about the B7500. I was looking for the smallest, lightest tractor that I could get by with and I haven't missed the 3 extra hp of the B2700 yet. It does everything I need to do and then some. It's a great little machine. You've pretty much got the gears idea down. The B2400 only comes with Hydro and if you are doing any amount of loader work I would recommend it. I have standard on the ag tractors at the farm but the hydro is much more convenient. I have the LA351 loader with a 770# capacity. It's the most expensive wheel barrow I've ever had but it works great, I wouldn't be without it, and it comes off and on in about two minutes without tools. I don't know about the front blade, I use a rear box blade so I can't help there but with the loader you'll have the hydraulics set up there for adjustment anyway and getting an additional SCV on the rear shouldn't be a problem. I don't have a belly deck. I've got a 3-pt rear dischrge mower. The belly mower would have been more convenient going around all the trees but was more expensive and tougher to put off and on. I also bush hog a 10 acre pasture and need the ground clearance. I don't know if raising and lowering the deck is hydraulic or not but I would think that it is. A 5'or 6' deck isn't the lightest of things to crank up and down with a lever. The impliments mount pretty easy but it's a lot less hassle to get a 16' trailer. I think your 8' trailer will be too light and be overmatched if you have to transport the tractor and impliments in 2 seperate trips. You also have the problem of getting the tools off the trailer at one one place while the tractor is at another. I know people that think that the $3000 for 3 hp is worth it but as I said, I've never done anything that that I've really missed it but I do have access to 2 bigger ag tractors if needed. I hope this helps but depending on what you want to do with it, couldn't you dress up that JD455 do most of the jobs you have lined up. Don't get me wrong, I had a 18hp JD lawn tractor before and it's no compact but you could probably do it for a lot less than the cost of buying a new Kubota. It just depends what you want to use it for.

You really should get some assistance ID-ing the weeds and come up with a management plan based upon what you have. Most non-agressive annual weeds can be tilled under, but some perennial species have tuberous or fiberous roots which will resprout even worse after being tilled or cut up. If you do decide to spray, its safest to just go with a herbicide that is not activated or stored in the soil. Round-up works well and will kill most vegetation if sprayed when the vegetation is green. Then the Round-up will dissipate within a short time, and has no effect on the soil or seeds, so you can then plant right away

About King Kutter implements I purchased a new 48 inch roto-tiller about 3 weeks ago. After unloading and filling the gear cases I was greasing it and noticed oil coming out of the tine shaft. I called the dealer right away and told him of the problem. Tiller was returned to dealer and I was told he would fix it or give me a new one if it came in first. I picked up my tiller again today and was told the tine shaft had a rough spot and tore the oil seal. Dealer replaced everything he thought would cause the problem. I haven't had a chance to use it yet but it is a heavy tiller and seems well made for the price I paid $984.00

The main reason calcium chloride is used is because it adds a significant amount of weight. It shouldn't cost hundreds of dollars to fill a comopacts tire. I just had a 18.4-28" tire drained & filled to fix a hole & it cost $15. I have a kitfor filling tires with fluid. It attaches to the tube & you pressurize a barrel to 4psi to fill the tube. I used it once. It isn't worth messing around with for $15. I'd much rather have chloride spill on the ground from a leak than antifreeze. I've seen what antifreeze does to an animal that licked it because it is sweet tasting.
