I have two acres of grass with a house, pond, driveway and a fence (slip rail fence - 4 row) all the way around the property. My primary goal is to reduce the mowing time since it's a weekly activity. Secondly I need a tractor to move dirt, rocks and mulch, plow the driveway, maintain the pond and keep the edges of the property clear of brush. So do I want something like a JD 650 or 850 series with a 60" or 72" deck - how well will these units go around trees and mow along a fence row. My other option is a zero-turn mower for mowing and a tractor just for the non-mowing work. Any thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated.Thanks,<br>Dave in PA

am I missing something here?...or just interpretting the data incorrectly?<br>NH TC33D 3ph at 24" aft = 1635#, deere 4300 and kubota 3010 = 2200#<br>NH 7308 FEL = 800#, deere 430 = 1258, kubota L481 = 1058<br>I really want to go blue...cost and ergonomics are great...but I'm concerned/confused over the apparent disparity here....help me out here NH owners!

Tom...the repair manual I have covers the 1300-1500 and the 1700-1900. Boy I wish I had it with me right now, of course I have paid the most attention to the 1500 section but I am almost certain that the 1900 did not have a two speed PTO as an option, it did have (as did the rest of the series) a two speed rear axle and the engage lever for that did come out of the left side of the control cluster in front of the seat. The PTO lever is a fairly large lever directly in front of the seat coming out of this control cluster and the 4wd engage lever is to the right. This is a blue Ford right and not the Shibarau similar tractor?

Hope this is helpful and I will be back at camp tonight I think and will bring the manual back with me if you have any questions.

I'm looking for a compact tractor for mainly field mowing (4.5 hectares) and snow removal (450 yds road). A dealer has one tractor of which he knows almost nothing about. He has (practically) no knowledge of manufacturer, engine, year etc. Only clues are:<br>- It looks a little like Kubota F2000, but is somewhat smaller<br>- There are words "Multi-trac" and (I think) "JL220H" painted on the side<br>- It probably runs on gasoline<br>- It is most likely 2WD<br>- Someone has said that the engine is similar (or same) as the one in Fiat 600 (car)<br>Can anyone recognize the machine? I would REALLY appreciate any info, since the machine is reasonably priced and has just the right accessories for me, but I simply cannot by it unless I know a bit more about it!

Kim, I'm glad you said that....because I was wondering the same thing. Tom, how do you know that the front driveshaft is moving? I think it is enclosed in a tubular cover. At least the ones on the 1910 Fords were and there is no way you could see if it was turning or not. Another thing to remember is that these tractors don't have lockout hubs. So if the front wheels are turning, they will be causing the front driveshaft to rotate. The driveshaft "freewheels" inside the transmission front cover until you engage it via the 4wd lever.

Danny-The best I can do is relate to you what I found in a 1995 handbook for farm equipment dealers. There are two model 284's. The 284G (gas) made from 1976 - 1981 had: 27HP (PTO), 4 cylinders 71 C.I.D., 8F/2R transmission, single rear hyd. outlet, 540/1000RPM PTO, 3 point hitch as standard, and weighed 2138 lbs. The 284 (diesel) was made from 1980 - 1984 and had: 28HP (PTO), 3 cylinders 91C.I.D., and weighed 2046 lbs. All other specs were the same for the diesel. The 1995 RETAIL advertised prices are listed as $1500 - $3000 for the 284G and $3600 - $5600 for the 284. Drive-it-off-the-lot prices are listed at $200 less on the $1500 end to $800 less at the $5600 end. Both models had a MFWD option (book says that adds $1800 to the price). Book also says an unspecified "front end loader" adds $1200. That's all I can find about the 284's. Hope the 1995 price info is at least some help.

I've talked to a couple people that own them & have used them on pine straw & pine cones. They really were sold on them. I sold one last week to a person that had used it to rake up small sticks after a storm. If you go to fast they will ride over the material instead of raking it. I just bought a new JD 4300 which was delivered Friday. I had a great weekend playing. It came with the new axle and the dealer had a 4400 he had just received with the new axle. I was able to compare it to one he already had with the old style axle to verify it was the new axle. I based the comparison on information I got here on the CTB. I drove it all over my yard and didn't peel up anything. I even found some sand and was turning it fairly tightly in and out of FWD and left no more obvious tread marks than you would expect. It appears to me the problem is fixed with the new axle.

Matt, I don't know about that particular engine, but some are adjustable simply by changing the length or strength of the little spring. I have an old 3.5hp Briggs on a spray rig and I had to shorten the spring recently to get the proper RPMs out of the engine.

I have a 21D and pull a rear mount 60" behind it. I'd have to go with Donald on this one. The 60" works great for me, but 72" might be a bit much. If you want a 6 footer, I'd go with at least a 25D.

I had a 52 loader on my first 855 (purchased new in 1986). The 52 loader has turnbuckle clamp arrangement for attaching to the 4" tube that runs through the frame of the tractor. This is different fron the latching mechanism found on the 70A. It is a good loader it just doesn't attach or detach as quickly as the 70A. I had a 70A loader on a the last 855 I owned. Attaching the 52 loader requires a level surface more so than the 70A.

Re: Pond construction costs, Your 5K estimate sounds pretty reasonable to me, if they can deliver what you want in a timely manner. This is not a job for a guy with a backhoe or small dozer. It will be done most reasonably with a mid to large excavator and dumptrucks unless all soil is being used adjacent to the pond (i.e. one end or side) Then a large wheel loader or large dozer may be practical. The recomendation to aquire other bids is very good advise. Its often the only way know for sure that a quote is competitive. Pay close attention to grades and slopes as its being built as its costly to rework later. Good luck, Jim

Hi guys. The JD 48 hoe is only on hold for 45-4700 tractors. I was informed that the fix is out and the back ordered units should start shipping any day now. There was not a problem with the mounts for the smaller 4000 series tractors. That's why the last poster got his so quickly.

Both the ym1500 & ym1700 use the thermosiphon system. There is no waterpump. If to high a cnmcentration of antifreeze is used in warm weather the coolant won't circulate properly & can cause overheating. I'd recommend running them with water in warm temps.
