Just bought an L1501. It included a 4' box blade, bush-hog, disk, and a new 8' x 16' dual axle trailor for $5,400. Fair deal??? Also, anyone know where I can get a maintenance manual??? Any other 1501 owners out there...Thanks for any response...

Don, right you are! Mine is the older yellow blade. From what I see of the web site, it is a lot like the 800. Someday I'd like to measure the metal thicknesses that I can get to and see if they are still building them so heavy. Or I guess I could just weigh it and compare. I agree that the 500 looks like the right size for my 33 horse tractor. A lot of dealers don't carry these top end blade, but it is nice to let people know that they are out there. In your opinion, who else makes a really good blade?

Most backhoes do this, although you could make the argument that they shouldn't. The seepage past the valves and/or seals is so slow that I don't think that this will affect the power at all.

What kind of oil & filter are you buying. I bought 2 gallons of Low Viscosity HY-GARD (JDM J20D) last fall for my 425. It cost $6.59 per gallon. The manual for my 4400 says it takes the same oil. $6.59 X 7 = $46.13. Is there new math involved here or is it the filter that is expensive.

It really depends what you want. I have a 4100 gear. Bought the gear unit to save some money and really don't regret it. It's really boils down to a choice of automatic trans vs. clutch. Both will do the job. You just have to clutch the gear model. If you are comfortable with this in your car, then it will be no big deal in the tractor. The hydrostat would be more convienient though if you're doing a lot of loader work or any kind of repetative stop-go-change directions type of use. The 790 is the best buy if you are looking for a tractor of this size. It's a very solid unit. I shied away though for two reasons: 1) JD had the 4100 gear on sale last month for $9999, and 2) the frame size of the 790 appeared to be too large for some of my intended mowing uses. I really was looking for a compromise between power and manuverability. I made the right choice for me. If your 5 acres is wide open and easy to manuver around, I would definately go with the 790 (just a lot more for the same money). My 2 cents.

Jim, I was a little suprised in reading your post, that the Kioti was only 500 bucks less than the Kubota. I recall the Kiotis being alot less than the Kubotas. Before you decide on either one, get a "check" on those prices. I'm sure, like the others above, that the kubota will have a better resale value. As far as the Kioti goes, compare the specs. It MAY wind up being a great little tractor... Once in a while I'll hear the Kioti critized, But does anyone remember what was once said about the now well proven Kubota when it first showed up years ago??????????? I personally would like to see more competition in the compact market. Best of luck Jim in your choice.

In the early 70's I worked on a private yacht with a pair of 12V 71 supercharged Detroit Diesels and a pair of 30kw generators. As we had dry smokestacks we also burned kero because it produced less smoke & soot. By the way, we burned 35 gal per hour.
However, on my TC29D I just use fuel additive & that has taken care of any "winter fuel" problems here in SE Michigan.

Hi I'm in the market for a hydraulic dump trailer for hauling gravel, brush, leaves , shingls, and the tractor. Does anyone have an opinion on the different brands? I have done a little reseach and have found Bri-mar, U-dump, Dandy dump and Foster. I have seen Bri-mar and Dandy dump in person, they seem functional but a little flimsy. The Foster is a New Holland company, lthough I have only seen a brochure they seem to be the best built. Almost over built. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

The only word of advice I'd like to offer is: IF you decide to go with chain tie downs, be sure you get the new "compound" tighteners. Don't get a deal on the old style, which, while easy to close (tighten) came slamming open and are a signifcant safety hazard if you're not paying attention. You don't want to catch a tightner in the face to save couple of bucks.

Yeah, now you're starting to make sense. I naturally only think end over end if going up or down a slope. Bringing in the possibility of going sideways while going down hill because you lost traction does register. You have made the clearest and simplest case. I think some of the justifications in this series of postings, got so complicated that those of us that are "simply" challenged just didn't understand. Good job.

I got my 790 in Oct. 99'. Love the machine, and sounds like you are getting a great deal. I paid 14,700 for 790 4wd mid/rear pto/70 loader/ ballast box/ turf tires.

The pto's have seperate levers and can be engaged one at time or both, as well as a 2-stage clutch, so yes to your question. But, I guess you know all this by now. Love the machine, and snow removal was a blast this winter.....

I agree, Jim. Did one year of research and shopping before buying mine. Concluded that ANY compact (new or used) is a wiser investment than a $10K garden tractor.

Michael, you just may be onto something here with out even knowing it my friend. If everyone had a compact (kids included), they would all be out playing in the dirt and getting greasy like the rest of us instead of fighting and shooting... What d'ya think?

I just sold a 855. I moves a 5' bush hog fine. There was a little power dip when I ran through a 2"suckling but not bad. I am looking now at the 4600 which is twice the pto power. I needed more power for an auger. When I got to the last foot of a 4' depth it had gotten stuck. This is also because the soils were damp to wet near trees I water. This caused the clay to hang it up. I used a 4" tiller with it no problem. A two row off set 18" disks totaling 16 disks on a 5 or 6 foot widt set up. I also had about 300 hours 365 when I sold it. I paid approx. k$13k sold for $10.6k. It had a loader with scraper box with 4 dropout scarifiers. The back hoes fun close to $7k.

Bob, maybe I'm missing something in the info. I saw at your website, but here is how I see it. The tractor side is $195 (for Cat. 1) and then a further $195 per implement. Now as a landscaper who specializes in golf course construction the economics looks like this. Tractor plus only 6 implements (pulverizer, box blade, aerator, roller, tiller, and rake) I am looking at $1365 plus since this is US $ it is $2047.50 for me in Cdn. money, and I still have to get off to hook up the hyd. lines and/or pto drive shaft right? By my calculation it would be at LEAST 200 hrs. of saved time before I even came close to pay-back, never mind any savings....what am I missing?

we've used a ford 601 with a loader and forks for years to handle sod pallets and have never had a problem.most of our pallets usally run around 800 to 1100 pounds.our skid steer works well with the olny problem being reach.loading in a pickup is easier with the tractor becuse you don't have to push the first pallet with the second one to get them both in the bed.the rear tires are filled with fluid and we have 2/3rd's of a 55 gallon drum of concrete on the 3 point for wieght.god luck.

contact your new holland dealer.mine got recalled last year to have some modifacation done to it.today i took it back to have the deck replaced.after they did the mod.it never cut the grass clean so i complained.the service manager contacted NH and they agreed to replace the deck using my old parts.the way it was explained to me was if i wanted it replaced they would do it,but it wasn't a manditory recall.good luck

Well, my search for a compact tractor is over. I made a deal on this 855 last night for $17,500. I guess it's a fair deal because it's more than I want to pay and less than the owner wants to sell it for! I take delivery tomorrow.
