My front axle has sprung a leak!! I was wondering how big of a job it is to repair. It's leaking were the two halfs come together at the wheel. The bottom part is stationary and the top half rotates when the tire is turned. What ever seals these to pieces must be bad. I'm not sure how to get it apart and what kind of seal there is. Maybe a o-ring or gasket. I need to get a repair manual. Any help would be appreciated.

Well I just unloaded a JD455, I had a lot of trouble with oil leaks on the unit. To make a long story short the tractor is overpriced for what you get. The parts are even more overpriced!!! I think the reason they paint them green is because it takes alot of green to keep them going!!! I bought a New Holland TC18 With all the bells and whistles for less then a loaded out 455. It is a little big for my application, but it does a great deal more! Besides the resale is much higher on a compact tractor then a garden tractor. I think that if the BX Kubota was available at the time that I replaced my Deere, it would of been a consideration. Although I am hooked on the compacts now!!

Just something to think about.

I'm writing a study on the effects of exchange rates on establishing market dominance. In this case, it is a well known story that the North American manufacturers ignored the compact tractor market for years and Kubota established itself very well. I'm wondering if the North American manufactures could have done anything about Kubota if they had been paying more attention.

Nuc, there's one factor that you may not understand. Tractor manufacturers build different variations of similar tractors exclusively for certain markets around the world. The more advanced the countrys farming practices, the more advanced the tractor and also the higher priced it will be. For example, JD still builds tractors for sale in Argentina and Mexico whose designs became obsolete in the US up to twenty years ago. I would suspect you might find similar differences in tractors built for your market as well. I do know that MF is still building tractors for less developed ag markets that are virtually unchanged from the ones they sold in the US in the 1960's. Just my $.02. Don.

I regularly use a 6' Land-pride finish mower & a 5' Bush-hog behind a 20hp. 2wd compact with no problem at all. The only thing your available (pto) power determines really is the SPEED you can work, sometimes if the grass is thick (in the spring, etc.) you may be gowing awfully slow, but it still beats a 19" Lawn-boy... Yesterday I looked at a 1998 JD 855 with 140 hrs on it, garaged, 4wd hydro trans, #7 backhoe, #70 loader, and calcium filled turf tires. It's supposedly been used only for residential use, but the owner is a building contractor and has a trailer for it, so I don't wholly believe that. The seller is asking $21,000 for the package. It's in great shape, not a scratch on it. I offered 17K and he countered with 19K. Should I go for it? It's more than I want to spend for a used tractor, but having the backhoe would make my life a lot easier. I'm a little worried about the PTO H.P. though. I'm afraid it won't have enough guts to run a brush chipper, power rake or 5 foot brush hog. I was seriouly considering getting a new 790 which has more PTO H.P., but having the hydro transmission would be nice for all the loader work I need to do. Any comments would be appreciated.<br>

I'm new to the board, and have been having the infamous scuff problems also (I purchased a 4300 4WD with R4 tires last summer). I just contacted my dealer, and he told me that Deere is in the process of sending out upgrade kits for all 4000 models regardless of tire type. My dealer guesses this upgrade would start in the next few months. That's the latest I've gotten, and from past experiences, I don't think he's making it up.

This is one topic I actually speak on with experience. You can control a tractor much better with front end pointed up the hill. Also, if you have directional tires(R1,R4)) your traction is greatly decreased when backing up a hill or trying to hold back driving down hill if the nose is pointed down. Also, if you are going down a hill and the rear tires start to slide, take it out of gear and hold back with brakes. Otherwise the tires will begin to counterrotate and the back end will start to come around the front. But, as stated before, the most important thing is to not traverse a hill sideways if you are at all uncomofortable. And if equipped with a loader, keep it close the ground. I would have to suspect that most compact tractors that are flipped can be blamed on a loader with the bucket to high while transporting a load.

I have just purchased a house in Maine that has a four-stall barn, a small riding ring and 15 acres of pasture with some hills. We will have from 2-4 horses on the property. We will not hay the property. I could use a tractor to bush hog and/or finish mow the fields; possibly seed the fields; move manure; keep the riding ring in shape (did I forget anything?) I plan on snow plowing with a truck as that should be much faster and warmer! I have been primarily looking at new compact tractors -specifically the Kubota B2710- as I have absolutely no mechanical ability! Carver Equipment has the B2710 with a loader on sale for $15100. It would probably cost another $900 for delivery (or I could take 4 days to drive down and get it with a rented trailer and maybe save $500). Of course, I would still need to add on a "pulverizer" and a mower and possibly a box scraper. If I want to buy new, I may have to wait until next year. Should I consider buying used? If so, what price range is the "sweet spot" for used compact tractors? Which brands? If I buy used, do you recommend that I buy from a local dealer because I am mechanically challenged? We will be moving in the fall and within a year of moving in, I will need to purchase a full-size 4X4 ½ ton pu, a horse trailer, a tractor and of course, some horses! I’d love to buy a new tractor, but maybe some of the money "saved" by buying used would be better spent on the truck (which I would use every day), the horse trailer (a SAFE one!) or the horses themselves! Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! TIA PS We’ve had horses and some land before (but never a tractor), so we have some idea of what we are getting into!<br>

Chris--while I do not have nearly Murf's experience since he uses forks for a living, I do have a set of JD forks that are used in place of the bucket on my 430 loader (JD 4400 HST tractor). For occasional use, they work great, but as Murf indicated, they are so far out in front of the tractor that it takes considerable ballast on the 3-point to safely balance the tractor front-to-back. Also reiterating what Murf indicated about turning radius, even though the 4200-4400 tractors have a tight turning radius, the added length with the forks on the end of the loader (in place of the bucket) do add significantly to the turning radius. However, if you, like I, don't make your living with the tractor and just need the forks for periodically saving you back, then the JD forks are great. It takes only two minutes to pull the two pins on the bucket and back out of it and then drive into the fork, add the two pins and you're in business. The price I paid for the JD fork attachment for the 430 loader was $858. IF you don't need to lift anything very high, then a less expensive alternative would be 3-point mounted forks that have no hydraulics for extra lift, like those of a real front-end loader. Most implement dealers will have catalogs with several brands of rear 3-point mounted forks such as those made by Manufacturer's Diversified Services (MDS) in New Holland, PA in which their economy forks will lift 1200 pounds and cost about $225, or their standard duty forks which will lift 1500 pounds and cost about $300, or their adjustable tine forks which cost about $500. However, the total lift height of these will only be about 20 inches, so they cannot be used to load trailers, but would work great to just move pallets of materials from one spot to another or use them as a carryall.

If it happened suddenly, I would suspect the spring in the pressure relief valve for the 3pth let go. This is common, and when it fails the valve goes wide open and there is no pressure to actuate any hydraulics. It is easy to check, put a hyd. pressure gauge (capable of at least 3,000psi) on the system, you should have at least 1,000psi, 2200-2500psi at full throttle. Anything less or wildly fluctuating, and the valve is dumping fluid straight back to the reservoir. Best of luck.

I saw the King Kutter in the ad the other day. Only problem I saw is there is no corner piece welded into the top corners which makes it quite a bit weaker than if it had corner pieces. All depends on what you want to do with it. I use a 5ft on a 27 hp Kubota with no problems and wouldn't go smaller. Great implement though and very versatile. I think the last post of 5hp per foot is a good rule of thumb too.

I am looking at Compacts from the Big Three and was waiting for my quotes etc to come in from each dealer. I must say I am pleasantly surprised by the new list prices of the BX line up and the new 7400/7500 line up. I almost bought a JD 455 Garden Tractor before I stepped back and said,"not". The price of a 455 with 54" deck is more than BX2200 with 54"deck. No comparison at all between tractors. I am waiting though for the 7400/7500 to arrive just to compare. Kubota places the BX line against the 4100 JD in their comparison brochure and they are very close in specs except for size and slightly less 3 pt hitch lift. The price though is thousands less and in my opinion the quality is every bit as good or better than JD. In fact the Boomer TC18 is very close in price and quality and I will have to test each very closely. Anyone in the States have a BX series that can help me out on how they like theirs? Thanks.

I re-read the intended uses for the tractor. Mowing is on the list. Live PTO is very good, especially if finish mowing is needed. Sort of looks like a bad hair cut if the blades slow down when the tractor is gliding to a stop. Same issue, but more tolerable, for other types of mowing. Live PTO also is good for snow blowing. I don't know if the 790 has live PTO.

Regarding HST in a compact: Some say HST in a compact is essential. I went the other way. I reasoned that lack of power/traction can stop you cold, and there's precious few horses in compacts to start with. Fewer horses means smaller tires, so there's less traction as well. I reasoned that gears put more engine power on the ground than HST. In addition, the money saved by not getting HST meant that I could get a bigger tractor--with bigger tires. Guess my strategy was to get something big enough to do about 90% of what I need (which includes some construction) and save about 10% for contractors.

Sometimes contractors are cheaper than having a huge machine, but a steady stream of contractors at your door will thin out a wallet too. I just tried to get a tractor that I could keep as busy as possible without breaking the bank. ood reasoning on my part

There are somethings to keep in mind about manual transmissions. My transmission gives 3 syncromeshed forward gears in each of 4 ranges. With a manual transmission, it's important to know if you can shift on the fly. With syncromesh, you can; without, the answer if either 'no' or 'with difficulty.' I can shift the 3 speeds but not the ranges on the fly.

It's also important to consider if the tractor ever will be worked in reverse (e.g. 3ph snow blowing or dozing with a back blade). With a PTO implement like a 3ph blower, you have to run at PTO rpm, and the only way to adjust speed is with the transmission. I have 4 reverse gears. I'm not sure I'd like having only 2 reverses. Even if dozing with a back blade, I imagine that it could be tough to find the right combination of speed and rpm with only two reverses.

I think HST is much better at allowing you chose a comfortable operating speed while maintaining PTO rpm and also in changing from forward to reverse. But, I made my choice, and I got some power in exchange for spitting gears and wearing out clutches with loader work. Think it worked for me.

Cost is relative. Cost of doing business in the US is higher (wages, infrastructure, etc). A new compact in the USA probably runs a typical owner (my guess - not based on actual statistics) 20% to 33% of their annual household salary. What is the ratio in Asia?

Back blade vs box scraper was another of my quandaries. Knew all the tilts, angles, swings and offsets of a good back blade would be useful (Sort of reminds me of an old billows portrait camera).

However, I suspected that a box blade would be better at grading. I think the idea is that storing dirt in the box which also spreads under the rear blade at the same time the scraper is cutting gives better control than storing dirt on the front of a blade.

Well, I didn't know about end plate accessories. Sure would keep more dirt on the front of the blade and make smaller berms. Guess that now I have to figure out if I can do a decent job of grading with a back blade.

Lord this gets complicated. Oh well, almost anything would be an improvement on my grading with a loader bucket. Suppose I'll get better with the loader, but right now parts of the gravel drive look like they were designed with a french curve.

Thanks for the input. If I can't figure it out, I'll just have to get a bigger shed. Course I'd have to talk to the wife, and that could get complicated too.

The tractor has turf tires with an aftermarket canopy that the dealer says is around $385 installed (if purchased separately). Being a novice to tractors, I am not sure what you mean about the difference in controls.
