Kimball... Not an answer to your real question, but I remember from my years of growing up on a farm that sickle mowers are (1) *very* labor intensive (lots of vibrating parts wanting to come loose, plus sharpening takes lots of time and patience), and (2) subject to immediate, dramatic failure if the sickle hits a rock, stump, etc. Now that I have my own few acres of grass to keep down, I use a bush-hog-type rotary in the rough stuff and a riding mower around the house.

Thanks SteveofNJ, I did buy the JD 790 and I Think I got the "right" one. Took it to the land last Saturday and cleared the Kudzu from out of 2 large Red Oak trees. I will go this coming weekend and try to free several more........Scott from Tennessee.

turfman- If you got a few minutes,could you check to see exactly where the dealer tied into the rear work light harness. My original thought would be to tie into the rear work lights within a few inches of them. Secondly, when you run the rop lights, do you have all your lights on and if so, does your alternator keep up with the current demands. Appreciate the effort. bo

Greetings all,Just surfed in from the John Deere threads and wanted to pose a question to Boomer owners. Seems that a lot has been written by JD 4xxx owners about turf tearing (scuffing) when cornering. Has anyone ever seen this problem with the Boomer series compacts? Larry, thanks for your input. Here in MS in many areas the soil below about 6" to 12" deep can be high in clay content and hard. The reason for breaking up the soil deeper is to promote water drainage and plant root penetration. Most soil and plant science experts recommend chisel plowing or subsoiling for enhanced plant growth,some even go as deep as 18".

Dana,exhaust looks good. How much did it run to have done? Is the pipe
supported where it crosses under frame and is there plenty of clearance?

Hmmm, some good thoughts. I called for insurance, and one guy told me something like 3,300.00 for 300,000.00 libility a year. But, this was for excavating (digging into the earth). I would guess you guys doing lawn mowing, or tilling/soil spreading, can't be paying 3k + for insurance. So, I guess the trick here is to use my contracting business, and it's insurance, and tell the agent I have "A JOB" that requires some digging with a rental machine, bet the additional insurance would be a lot cheaper, and I am sure all these Landscapers are not paying that kind of money.

As far as implements, I have a sub soiler that works great (even in rocky soil) for shallow trenching (cable wire/pvc pipe for irrigation). Have a rake, and would hope to get a backhoe as soon as I get some cash for that. Anyway. Keep the ideas coming.

To post a Picture You:

1) You need to store them on a Web Host
2) If you don't have a Web Host you can get one at www.xoom.com. after you
get a web host you can ftp the images to your site
3)If you've got that then you need to place the URL of the image in the
Picture/Image link on the CTB Postmessage Page

If all of this seems like gibberish, then simply email the photos to me as
an attachment along with the message content you want to post, I will take
care of the above for you and host the pictures on jPlan. The pictures
should be in gif or jpeg format

I would also like to have a photo Page with an index of all the makes and models. Your help is appreciated.

Dealers If you would like to help photos of your tractor models would be great particularly a set of pictures all taken from the same distance from the tractor. This would give buyers an idea of the raltive size of the machines which varies fairly widely.

Russell Just go look at both tractors you'll know the New Holland is the right decission, Kobota didn't quit making that model for nothin' A 1960 model looked the same!!! New Holand is much more user friendly.

I have a 4200 hst 60" belly mower it has no trouble mowing or bushoging in the a or b range but out on the road if you start up a grade you will soon run out of power in c range.

As a landscaper I had the same problem. I got a scrap of steel pipe ~ 24" long, just slightly larger than the auger bit (12" in this case) and welded it to a scrap of heavy steel plate, then blew a couple holes with the torch to let rain water out. Now even the female summer students can hookup or drop it. The whole thing stands vertically in the pipe the mount, this allows hookup or dropping with ease even on uneven ground, unlike the 'parking stands' made by the manufacturers. Besides it cost all of probably $5 (for coffees) to make....

I bought a Ford 1500 4WD with the Ford 770 loader this summer from a dealer for $6500. I have sort of compared since then and I feel that this price was in the ball park, especially since I bought it from a dealer. I have seen the 2WD without the loader advertised for the same price. The 1500 is a 20 HP tractor, 17 at the PTO. The 1X10 series used the 3 cylinder diesel the 1500 is a two cylinder. I have been happy with this tractor and it has done everything I have needed it to do so far, working mostly in the woods. I have not had it out of 4wd though for more than about 5 minutes :-) I would think the backhoe and snowblower could add 2-4k to the price depending on their condition.

It's not the way they came. but they did come in an optional 2wd. Same size tires would not hurt (or help) the 2wd version. They could cause lots of damage to the 4wd version.
