Scott - not to complicate your life, but are you ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY sure you do not want a hydrostatic transmission? You mention a loader, and I really find the hydro makes like easier. If you have tried hydro, and still want the 790 or 2500, I bet they are virtually identical in quality and capabilities based on brief test drives I took on both before i went hydro. "Once you go hydro you wilkl never go back"

Life is very simple, your tractor is a see-saw with the fulcrum being somewhere in the middle of the tractor. Too much weight in the front of the tractor-read load in bucket- and not enough in the back and you wind up on a three point landing looking at the ground {bucket and two front tires}and going no where. If your bucket is real high when this happens then you may merrily be flying throught the air playing superman. Depending if you got loaded rears and the weight of your tractor and the amount of load your bucket can lift you have to add enough weight on the back to counterbalance the front load. Read your owners manual-it should be real enlightening or just add about 400-600 lbs. on the back and carry your loaded bucket real low . The tractor will tell you if you have enough. bo

Can someone please explain the difference between a live continuous PTO, a live independent pto and a transmission pto system? I'm interested in a ford 1720 but I'm not sure what kind of pto it has. I know the manual says it has a duel clutch when it is depressed have way the machine stops but not the pto and when it is depressed all of the wat down both the tractor and pto stop. What kind of pto system is this?

How do you test oil to see if it is ok ? Without going to any laboratory. My Massey Ferguson dealer who also sells oil from the company that manufactures Massey tractors told me that one simple test was to put 1 or 2 drops of oil on your index finger and rub gently with your thumb. You should not feel your fingerprints. Many oils fail that test and many oils clear that hurdle. Any opinions ?

Yes, the grab hooks I see are welded to the bucket. Thanks for the comment. I'm
familar with the cast metal quality of welds but hadn't connected the idea to
hooks welded onto loader buckets. Yep, not a good idea to subject welds to much
lateral force.

I once, unfortunately, saw a truck tumble down a mountain pass in Colorado. We saw the truck at a wreckers on the way back and stopped. The person I was with identified the cause of the crash as a tie rod that somebody had welded, and not even a good weld. I don't believe the driver survived to learn the lesson. Don't try to save money by sticking critical parts together with
the little arcer in your garage.

Regarding my floating loader bucket: The dealer said "opps" when I asked whether there was any reason why somebody would want a floating bucket. I have a few less gouges in my gravel drive way now that I'm not trying to spread gravel while riding the lift control.

This was a good quality tractor. Very commonly seen. Also available in gasoline with a Continental engine. I think that the diesel was Continental or Perkins. And I think that they were 4 speeds with hi/low. I could see that tractor being worth that money, although few people would agree with me. But for $5500 it should be in extremely nice condition. New tires, new hoses, good metal - needing nothing at all and nice exterior too. Some MF 65s had a bastard-type auxillary hydraulic outlet which required you to flip a lever and select either the 3pt or aux. flow to anywhere else - like to a loader....but not both at the same time. This was a real drawback. They also used a two-stage clutch for the PTO. If the clutch is hard to depress or seems like it has no adjustment then be suspicious of a worn-out clutch - a major job, and fairly common in old Masseys. Are you sure it has power steering? A power steering pump does not guarantee that it has the rest of the power steering components. These cannot be added to some of the Masseys that came as manual steering originally. Make sure it was originally a power steering tractor.
If you are looking for this type of tractor you might also look at the JD models 3010 and especially the 3020. They were considered to be better tractors (and you are in the right price range), although they don't have that nice rounded profile of the older MF 65.

As a landscaper with a fleet of Kubota's, I can assure you, despite what the dealer says your machine will NOT suffer so horrible fate if you use non-Kubota fluids, filters, etc., so long as they MEET or EXCEED factory specifications. As a new owner you are about to find out that the orange paint we are so fond of is worth about $12,000.00/gallon, based on dealer parts pricing......case in point, one of my employees recently bought a 'female' quick-disconnect fitting at the local 'Orange store', it was $24.95, Kubota's m.s.r.p., I checked. Thye next day I bought two more at the nearest (Blue) toy store, they were $4.95, stamped with the same manufacturers name and part number as the first one......bottom line SHOP AROUND......

Vince is definately on to something here. Dealers will often push shortline attachments because they can hold a higher margin and still be less than name brand. One word of caution, most low rate financing programs offered by major manufacturers are for their brand only. Any savings gained by buying cheaper shortline products could be lost by having to pay higher interest on the whole package. On the other hand, some shortline attachments are superior in quality than name brand. Thorough comparisons are the best way to see which is the best value, regardless of price. Good luck.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid in many cases it is a crap shoot for most of us. And if Fram filters are worse than others now; well, it wouldn't be the first time a good company degraded and tried to survive on past reputation. I had a Kubota B7100 for 4 years and used Fram oil filters, but I never found a Fram to replace the hydraulic filter, so I had to stay with Kubota filters. Of course I'm still using Frams on my wife's car and my pickup. Maybe there was a reason, JerryG, that Fram didn't list a hydraulic filter for my B7100. Now that I have a B2710, I haven't had a chance to look at any catalogues to see whether anyone besides Kubota has air, oil, fuel, and hydraulic filters for it. I always kind of assume (and that's sometimes dangerous, too) that you can't go wrong following the owner's manual, so I may just stay with Kubota filters, but like some other people, I don't really like to pay 3 or 4 times as much as I should, even if it is a small amount.

Because the tractor hydraulics are a full flow type of system as opposed to a more static system like hydraulic brakes, bleeding them is not necessary. The flow will sweep out most air, and any air problem is more likely to be from air entrained into the fluid by the thrashing of the pump, cavitation, and return splash. Not much you can do about that. Cycling the loader when the oil is hot is the best way that I know of. I'd be interested in hearing if anyone has found a reason to bleed the tractor hydraulics. I can't see any reason that an air compressor would be necessary, but there are always new tricks to learn.

it will be sold friday here in texas by auction. it has several implements with it that i was interested in so i thought i would go. i need a finish mower to go with my kubota. i dont think their is any danger of me stealing anything , my auction experience lately has been that stuff usually brings more than you can buy new for. those tractors around here in texas have been advertised at around 16500 so i think youre right on the price. im hoping to get the mower, a 6 foot, for around 500 or so with almost 0 time on it.

Thanks to everone for the good feed back.I thenk i'll be able to come up with something b4 long.If i do i'll post it.By the way,for rigid brush with some horizontal branches such as Honeysucke(darn stuff),a pair of bucket forks work real well.Mount them close enough together to grab the limbs when
the forks are raised.For a stubbern bush you might have to budge it some before lifting,than it should pop right out.

I am trying to decide between a JD 4600 or 4400 and was wondering if anyone knew why the 620 or 670 Disks are not listed as being compatible with the 4400? Are there other disks available that are compatible with the 4400 or is it too small of a tractor?

Scott, I agree,rear blade is the way to go for snow. If you're still worried about asphalt damage, you can remove the bolt-on type cutting edge on a rear blade and replace it with a strip of UHMW poly plastic. Most truck snowplow manufacturers are offering it as an option for folks who have the same concerns as you. Most welding and metal fab. shops sell the stuff. Maybe even try it on the bottom of your ldr bucket, but you'd have drilling to do.

Jim: I have a JD 850 with a bush hog after market loader. No power steering. While steering ease is not the same as on my Boomer 21TD, it is not real bad. I use the loader for loading manure, some dirt moving etc. but generally not for more than an hour or two at a time. I wouldn' want to work it 8 hours/day regularly but for intermittent work it's not a problem (IMHO). If you drive it on hard surfaces for any distance on a regular basis you will get additional wear on your front tires because of the weight of the loader. I elected to not spend the extra $1K for the power steering that I would have needed if I got the JD loader (Bushhog was about $3k installed, JD was about $5K including the PS). I have not regretted it.

PS. I just got a Kelley 650 backhoe for the JD this year... A nice little machine you may want to consider after the loader is paid for.

Jack's point is still well taken. One major reason that knowledge isn't just power in this instance, but may mean your life, is that people don't feel uncomfortable at the same point. Some are just born risk takers, and others don't get nearly as much done as they otherwise could because they can't judge a slope well. Far better to know what you're doing than wonder. I've used one of R&B's slope indicators for only a few hours and already have gotten a far better feel for what's safe and what isn't from it than from my previous 25 years of tractor operation.
