i am trading my ford 1120 for a nh tc21d. my 1120 has been flawless for 8 years. does anyone have any information on the reliability of the the tc21d? is it still made by the same japanese company?

I can guarantee you that the "accelerated wear" on the bucket will be negligible. don't even worry about it. The blacktop is safe as long as you don't catch a corner of it with the edge of the bucket...then it will tear for sure. But that's the chance that you take with any implement. As for drilling holes in the bucket, this is a sort of mental stumbling block that bothers me as well. But once you do it you will see that it makes no difference at all to the bucket and opens the door for all kinds of nifty home-made gizmos that are far more fun than a pristine bucket. I don't drill through the cutting edge...much to hard anyway. The rest of the bucket is fair game. Just yesterday I drilled and mounted two 4x4 tow hooks - one on each end of the upper edge of the bucket.

Scott, I agree,rear blade is the way to go for snow. If you're still worried about asphalt damage, you can remove the bolt-on type cutting edge on a rear blade and replace it with a strip of UHMW poly plastic. Most truck snowplow manufacturers are offering it as an option for folks who have the same concerns as you. Most welding and metal fab. shops sell the stuff. Maybe even try it on the bottom of your ldr bucket, but you'd have drilling to do.

Does anyone know if JD lists attachments for the "70" series on the net. I have purchased a 1070 with a 440 loader/backhoe and would like to purchase a pallet fork. Before I can no longer purchase attachments. My JD dealer in North Dakota, as recently as last week, told me JD did not manufacture a pallet fork for the quick tach 440 loader. Have recently been in Wisconsin and the dealer there found a fork in Canada, its even green. Apparently a subcontractor in Canada manufactured this loader for them. Does anyone know the name of this company (WEB address) and if they are the manufacture of the 8B backhole or is it WOODS?<br>Could someone tell me the difference between the 8, 8A, and 8B backhoes and if the buckets are interchangable?<br>While reading the owners manual I cam across the attachment list. And on the list was a log splitter. Would this mean that JD also contracted some company to build this and paint it green?<br>Planning on using the 3 point log splitter to split the wood then stack the wood on pallets (so I only have to move the split wood once manually) and fork the pallets to a location for storage in the winter months. <br>Since this machine came with a backhoe does it mean that an additional valve,(can't think of the valves'name off hand), has been installed with the control lever.<br>The reason why I am asking these questions is that I purchased the 1070 5 months ago. At present my work does not allow me to go home with exception of 2 weeks per year so am looking forward to inspecting my investment over the Christmas holiday. I wanted a dependable tractor that I could get on and go, that I would not need to work on with exception of normal maintenance. <br>If I wanted to install a 3rd valve, how hard and expensive would it be. May want to put a grapple fork on the bucket and will need a 3rd valve/lever to operate it. Since I purchased this 1070 in North Dakota, could I expect that JD has winterized coolant system to -40 below at factory?<br>Any information would be welcomed!<br>Duane Volk North Dakota

A JD dealer in Plattsburgh, NY (Giroux Bros) mentioned a bucket attachment like this to me last weekend. He didn't say the name of it nor the price. I'll post what I can find out.

Jim: I have a JD 850 with a bush hog after market loader. No power steering. While steering ease is not the same as on my Boomer 21TD, it is not real bad. I use the loader for loading manure, some dirt moving etc. but generally not for more than an hour or two at a time. I wouldn' want to work it 8 hours/day regularly but for intermittent work it's not a problem (IMHO). If you drive it on hard surfaces for any distance on a regular basis you will get additional wear on your front tires because of the weight of the loader. I elected to not spend the extra $1K for the power steering that I would have needed if I got the JD loader (Bushhog was about $3k installed, JD was about $5K including the PS). I have not regretted it.

PS. I just got a Kelley 650 backhoe for the JD this year... A nice little machine you may want to consider after the loader is paid for.

Jack's point is still well taken. One major reason that knowledge isn't just power in this instance, but may mean your life, is that people don't feel uncomfortable at the same point. Some are just born risk takers, and others don't get nearly as much done as they otherwise could because they can't judge a slope well. Far better to know what you're doing than wonder. I've used one of R&B's slope indicators for only a few hours and already have gotten a far better feel for what's safe and what isn't from it than from my previous 25 years of tractor operation.

A regenerative circuit is one where the fluid coming out of the rod end of the cylinder is "re-generated" by being fed back into the blind end. In effect, it's pressurizing both ends of the cylinder, but because the rod end generates less force (because the rod itself takes up piston surface area), the cylinder still extends. This has the effect of increasing the flow and, therefore, the cylinder motion speed, by approximately the ratio of the rod area to the cylinder area. It has the negative effect of reducing the power available by the same percentage as the flow increase, but this is not usually a problem when used with bucket dump applications. A "regenerative" circuit would obviously be a very big mistake on the roll-back side. Note, too, that regenerative circuits only work in one direction, i.e. when the cylinder is being extended. If you tried to use it the other way around, the cylinder motion would still be to extend the cylinder. The only uses of regenerative circuits, as far as I know, is to speed up cylinder motion, and to make life difficult for us hydraulics hobbyists (as in the case of when you're trying to use an electrically actuated valve to allow the roll-back & dump circuit to also control a 4-in-1 bucket)...

After months of weighing my intended uses and studying orange, green, blue, and red compacts (didn't really consider yellow) I plan to purchase a JD 4300 HST 4wd with 430 loader, 48 backhoe, and 60" belly mower early next year. The info exchange on the 4xxx problems has been invaluable; I didn't buy last month because of the the front axle issues and made it clear to several dealers that I was holding off until JD acknowledged and resolved this problem. I consider this my small contribution of economic pressure to help solve the problem. Thank you to all contributors to this (somewhat lengthy) thread and related threads on 4xxx issues; you've helped me incredibly!

Congratulations to CTB on its first birthday! This is the only board that I regularly visit and I find it invaluable as an information source. I applaud especially the civility and focus on generic compact tractor issues, while still covering the useful (and sometimes entertaining) comparisons on color preferences. I appreciate the time folks like Roger L. take to explain topics in detail as well as the contributions from everyone on problems/defects experienced on different brands and models.

The sub-topics woodlot mgmt, hobby farming, and home-grown solutions/inventions would hold the most interest for me. Keep up the good work!

PS - Wish we had a dealer as supportive/involved as Carver around here.

I have a John Deere 2010 in need of an overhaul. I've heard this engine has been known as a lemon. Is there another engine that will fit in it's place? I have a diesel engine so is there a gas engine for that tractor?Does anybody have a good idea to share on this?

Really wasn't all that cold. Loader had been setting outside and tractor was inside though. Temp was probably in the upper 20's. I brought tractor and loader inside and let set for quite some time. I had just changed engine oil and hydraulic and HST filter also. I did notice a leak at the hyd.oil cooler and tightened fittings, this was during prior use when it was warm. This led me to think I may have gotten some air in the system. After leaving the tractor inside for quite some time it still squalled terribly at full throttle. As I was taking it back outside to remove the loader I noticed when I lifted the loader some jerking. The tractor only has 50 hrs. on it so I can't think I have a hyd. pump problem although anything is possible. Any impute would be appreciated.

Roger -- been reading your posts and have been impressed with your knowledge. Bruce L just asked a question about the regen. circuit on the loader and what it is. I have one on my JD 870 and thought that it was a method of allowing a full bucket dump smoothly without slamming down. Mine also has a lockout. I never paid much attention to it cause The loader works fine. How about you take a few moments and explain the regen. circuit and the lockout in simple language. Would be appretiated. Bo

The 870 with backhoe is located in Traverse City, MI. Both are in excellent condition. Model year 1996. I am looking for around $20000.00 complete. I would need $5000.00 for the hoe alone.

I bought a brand new 770 4wd in 1994 with loader, mid mower, and 513 rotory cutter. I love it. Has not missed a beat since I purchased it. Each one of the attachments get used a lot with no problems either. The tractor performs great with each one of them. As far as the price, I paid $18000.00 for eveything I listed. The specs listed in the other responses are right on. You won't be disappointed.

It's a L3650 the backhoe is a L4560 4wd and a glideshift trans. I hate people who screw up on thier messages and I just did the same thing---sorry and thanks in advance for any help in this matter. LA650 loader

With little to no experience with this kind of stuff I'm not sure where to start Our snowmobile club here in MN is researching a brush cutter/shredder to maintain our trails in the off season. Quickly searching the net, Loftness shredders seem to pop up everywhere. This unit seems like it might work. Our needs are to cut and remove or mulch saplings up to 3". I have a few questions: With the ocasional rock and stump sticking up, how will this effect the unit? Are they pretty tough? How low do they cut? We have two trail groomers with full hydraulic systems on each. Our plan is to attach a shredder inplace of the blade and get year round use out of it. Any information you guys can provide on Loftness or any other brush shredder will be great. Thank you.

Eric,

Be very careful here. If you plan to do any mowing or other PTO operations with the tractor, I would recommend staying away from the 1715. The trans driven PTO (not live) is a real hinderance. It would be a fine machine for loader and/or backhoe work. I know, I had one for a year and ended up selling it because of the PTO.
