Being new to loaders ( Real dumb) . I plan to purchase the John Deere 4100. How does the 410 loader perform? I have 21 acres of woods and plan to use it for dirt moving, lifting, etc. Also what types of jobs can a loader perform?

What's wrong Bret??? Can't get that monster in your garage??? Leave it outside!!! But let us know what you come up with 'cause I'd like to be able to fold mine too. I almost cut mine to weld some hinges on, but I was worried about resale and liability.

Hmmm, well I can see that Sears tractors have there ups and downs, but in almost every case out in the east coast, Sears is know for it's garbage quality, and large amount of returns on their newer models. So, it still stands in my view, why dump money into Sears, instead of a nice Green & Yellow Garden Tractor. JD make the Sabre Line Starting around 1,500.00 even Scotts is made by JD and beats Sears.

Just my view. I am still love'n every minute I spend on my JD790!

I know of one individual who purchased skids for a pickup truck plow, and welded the mounting brackets to the backside of his 3pt blade. You might look into this.

Seems to be a bit of confusion among JD dealers. I'm not trying to create a controversy, because I'm not going to loose sleep wondering where what is made. But every JD dealer I've ever been in contact(5)with, has stated the 4100 is a pure import, short of mounting tires and such. The 4200 on up is assembled in GA.

Here we go again...... As I said previously, too many times, every tractor I have EVER owned (Orange, Blue, Green, and several shades of Red) 2wd & 4wd has suffered from this "problem". In fact I have been asking around since this topic came up (our family operates a large farm as well) everyone I spoke with said the same thing; if you run a tractor on grass with any thing short of implement (smooth baloon) tires on the front you will leave a couple of bare arcs in the grass where the front tires ran. Even the operator of the largest turf operation in Canada (a neighbour) confirmed this, he says it cost him ~$750 a pair for special tires that will not do this when cutting the turf before harvesting it. I never meant to offend anyone with the "loose nut behind the wheel" comment, it was offered in humour only.......the colour of the equipment may differ, the problems & pride are colour blind!! Best of luck folks......

Your question about wheel weights is a must in my book. Liquid in all four tires would be my first choice assuming this hill will be in your plans for years to come, and I don't favor adding liquid to tires. Our yard has areas which press the limit going sidways, but nothing that requires a direct approach. I find the rear wheel weights to provide additional stability even for mowing. The key in either direction will be to KEEP the BUCKET as LOW as possible. Don't forget: Anything on the tractor,beyond your front/rear axle centers, creates the "Scale of Justice" effect. Add a little inerta to that..and you've got bigger problems. Even an empty loader can "lighten" the contact of your rear tires to the ground if improper rear ballasting is used. I wish I could help more, but if nothing else, remember: 4wd provides front/rear braking. And secondly WEAR YOUR SEATBELT! Nothing at the bottom of that hill is worth your life.. and don't think it can't happen..Thats why we call them accidents! Don't mean to sound like a fatherly figure, but we all want you around to chat with us:0)

I agree Farminlady (not picking on you though), if the price is wrong. I built a 3 pt hitch PTO genset. 10000 watt unit for about $850. About the same price for a 6000-7000 watt gas stand alone. Took some work, some scrap metal and a little welding, but it works great. Had a drive shaft from my tiller, bought a splined adapter for the shaft, a couple of bearings, two pullies and a belt. Oh and a little drawing to make sure it all fit. My PTO speed is not 540 though. If someone has a 540 pto they would definately need two steps up or a rather large 33" pulley on the PTO and about a 5" on the generator. So you see the need for two steps. When I am moving snow, I could leave this unit on for weight. It is well protected from damage in the frame. And it's made for outdoor use. But it isn't as difficult to put on the machine as you would think. Also with bad weather in mind, and the frequent power outages that come with it, I have 1000 gallons of fuel to get me through in the tanks. So I opted, with my wife approving, to go the PTO way. A deisel unit would be great(separate) but they are definately to expensive. I don't want gas in my garage, except for the car, so a gas unit is out. To easy to have an explosion. In so far as excessive wear on the tractor, well I bought it to use, and seeing a diesel runs best when it is used the most, I am using this for everything it's worth. It's a diesel, it can take it. In so far as having to big a genset, I would rather have excess capacity, than run the genset at its max output. Then you have something extra if you really need it. I have a deep well, and she still grunts starting that, but that is with the well pump running, and supper cookin on the electric stove.

I have the chance to purchase a Ford 1720 tractor with a front end loader and heated hardshelled cab. It has 480 hrs and was used primarily to clear sidewalks by a small town. The dealer said the tractor looks very clean and would be a good buy for $15,000. I have no experience with tractors of any size but I have been pricing them and this appears to be a decent deal for the size machine. It is very difficult to locate used compact tractors in my area.<br> <br>How is the reputation for the Fords in particular the 1720 model? Is it a dependable tractor for starting and snow removal? The dealer also had a JD 770 for $11,800 which I was considering but the Ford looked so much bigger and had alot more options for an additional $3,200. Please give some comments on the quality of the Ford and is there any comparison of the JD and Ford or are they just two different machines not comparable?

The American, Non-Grey Market Yanmars are so rare that you would probably have a difficult time finding a junked one. Try some of the grey market Yanmar dealers because a lot of them have Yanmar parts dealerships.

I hate to be the wet blanket but because the dealer had it does not mean all maint performed properly. I bought a 1215 and the oil had been changed by my dealer. THe thing kept overheating until I figured there was too much oil in it. Their mechanics were used to bigger stuff and didn't think. Luckily no damage.
BTW dont put four whole quarts in a 1215. Te He!!:-)

I am in the process of doing a similar task [now discontinued until spring]. I started with a box scraper [King Kutter from the farm store - heavy duty and inexpensive] and then used a tiller. I also used the loader, dragging backwards with the bucket edge down, to do some shaping. Once you have the area basically prepped, the tiller works great. After three passes, the top 6" is a nice fine consistancy. Unless you are going to do a lot of tiller work, I would suggest renting. You should be able to do the two acres in a day and the tiller is managable to haul home in a truck or trailer.

I want to say thanks to all of those good people that replied to my post. These message boards are a geart help to all who read and reply to those asking for help or opinion. It looks like that ole boy was tryin to get off into my pocket. I'll be looking elsewhere for a tractor.
Some folks say that good people are hard to find these days. Well, all's I can say is I didn't have any trouble find-in some good ones.
