Like computers, you usually want to buy as much as you can afford. For the job you described, either will work. Cutting around the house can be cumbersome with a rig that big. My TZ25DA would make short work of everything you described and comes in 3-4k less with all the equipment. If you're going to do a lot of loader work, get the 30...definitely. In any case, go to the dealer to drive and operate the equipment on both so you can feel the hydraulics and the effects of the exact implements on weight and balance.

Craig...I couldn't be happier with my TZ. I knew about the ballast issues, but all tractors have them. I was a bit unprepared for the weight of the mower (60" 3PH). The loader and box blade counter each other perfectly. I may spring for the front weights later. I intend to just use the loader as ballast for now. If you've just got light landscaping on an estate-sized lot, the TZ25 is perfect. If you're doing more farm-like work, step up to a larger tractor.

I'm buying a country place...the owner has a MF 253 in the barn. Year unknown. Looks to be a bit below average condition with 14,350 hours on it. Tires are 75%. I know ZERO about MFs...any guesses as to its value? Thanks!

You mentioned some deed restrictions. Are they true "deed restrictions" that "run with the land in perpetuity" or are they Homeowner Association rules/covenants? It makes a difference. There is procedure for either, but we have to know which way to go.<br>

Set the box shanks as deep as your tractor's HP and traction can support.<br>

Make a pass with the box blade, loosening all the dirt.<br>
<br>
Now use the bucket to remove and discard (or reuse elsewhere) the loosely compacted dirt.<br>
<br>
If you're up close to the house, try tilting the loader bucket down right at the foundation and dragging it back to do the fine details.<br>
<br>
Repeat as necessary. <br>

With some practice, you can compact the dirt nicely when you're done by dragging the bucket tilt-down.<br>

The TC24s are a great value but they are about $2k more expensive and require a more expensive loader, making the combo about $3k higher. All in all, as I said, a good value but stretching the budget after adding all the implements.

Call me crazy, but placing caustic or toxic liquid IN your tires seems an inelegant solution to a pretty straight-forward engineering issue. This is doubly true given that I have a small area to work...where I have pets, kids, a garden and well water. Adding ballast to the 3PH while using the loader makes a lot more sense. The 3PH weight has a greater moment than the tires, which rely on weight alone given their proximity to the frame. I think I'll wait until my new TZ25DA shows up at my shop and actually read the owner's manual. I'm betting a 400 lb box scraper at 18" from the rear will be more than adequate to support the full capacity of the loader. The last newbie question remains: do box scrapers have custom made weight sets that go with them?

City boy question...I'm buying 80 acres. It's in hay now and relatively flat. I know I'll need a loader, mower & box blade. The mowing will be the largest repetitive task. I intend to put a 3000' grass airstrip on the property, so I'll need a mower capable of a pretty neat cut, but it doesn't need to be a putting green. The box blade will be used to put a crown on the current hay field. The airstrip will be 50'x3000'. It will also be used to keep a driving path clear and smooth. The loader will do light to moderate duty. So, what size tractor to keep me from mowing continously? Also, which mower? Rotary mid/rear mount? Flail? Thanks in advance!

What are your needs ?? Will these tractors do most of the tasks that are required by you easily ?? What did you think of the tractors when sat on them and drove them at the dealerships ?? Which dealership did you feel most comfortable with as you are buying into people at the dealership as much as you are buying a machine. A lot of people buy the 33 instead of the 29 due to the fact that they both weigh the same, the price is very close and you get a few more PTO hp.

I ended up getting 285/75 16 Mastercraft Courser AT tires which are made by Cooper and look like their Discoverer LT. Tires look nice and seem to ride better than the the Michelin LTX 265/75 16 tires that were the OEM tires. The tires do make a minimal amount of noise over the Michelin's but with the radio on and the Cummins purrin' you don't notice it.

I've had my 33D for two years and it has been flawless. A friend has had his 1715 for eight or nine years and has never had any problems with it. The class II New Hollands seem to be very reliable tractors but as others have mentioned a good dealer is a very important part of the equation. Good luck with your new machine and here's hoping it's Blue.
