Regarding the manual, it can be a real pain trying to help someone with a complex procedure that is described in the manual. A lot of time can be spent typing information from procedures that span multiple pages, pictures and diagrams are difficult to describe, and something always gets lost in the process. Sometimes the manual is the best solution.<br>

Crunch, with a single 12V battery it's unlikely that 24V is ever supplied to the shutoff solenoid. Two 12V batteries in series could supply 24 volts but a single battery could not unless there was a boosting circuit (unlikely). 14.4V sounds like alternator output.

Looking at the manual, the fuel shutoff solenoid contains two separate coils, a hold-in coil and a pull-in coil. It also has three wires, one red, one black, one white.

Battery voltage is supplied to the shutoff solenoid on the red wire through the K4 engine run relay any time the ignition switch is on. This is the only positive voltage supplied to the solenoid.

The black wire provides the ground for the hold-in coil. It should always show continuity with ground. This coil is always energized when there is voltage present on the red wire.

The white wire provides the pull-in coil ground. This ground is switched by the K3 relay. The K3 relay is energized for three seconds at engine start by the K6 timer relay. So the pull-in coil is energized by switching ground and not by applying additional voltage.

To further diagnose you'd probably have install the bad K6 relay, run it till it died, and then measure the voltage on the red wire and check the black and white wire for ground continuity during the failure. One guess is that the pull-in coil is getting energized when it should not (white wire switched to ground) causing the shutoff solenoid to overheat. Another guess is that the bad K6 relay is somehow causing the K4 engine run relay to shut off (they are connected).

In short ... I dunno :)

EJ, you are right on the money about value. There are a lot of good tractors but many lose their value quickly. Often the value is lost not by quality but by the absence of a parts chain and consistent dealer support which take years to build. How many times have people posted about not being able to find parts for less prolific brands?

I like the TCO (true cost to own) model Edmunds uses to rate cars and trucks. It takes into account estimated fuel consumption, cost to insure, repair costs and depreciation. Expensive brands are often among the cheapest to own because depreciation costs are so much lower.

Depreciation factors into tractor cost too but not if the owner never sells it. However, a tractor parked due to lack of parts isn't worth much.

Customer loyalty is built by consistently providing a solid product and good support. In today's short sighted business environment building loyalty is low on the priority list - quarterly profits rule and "loyalty" is proclaimed by marketing as an afterthought.

Rereading this it sounds like a bunch of labor day rambling.

Just some ideas. Sometimes on a hex head that has been used a few times you can see wear marks on the facets of the head. If the wear is on one side it is RH, the other it is LH. Also, I've seen some left hand heads that have an L or LH markings on the head.

Thanks for posting your solution. I've never read a study on the effects of ethanol on small engines but it's probably not good. If they are selling E-10 for gasoline in your area that may be part of the problem.

It seems that way but it also seems with an articulating axle the fulcrum may not be planted solidly. If it articulates "just a wee bit more" it may make the problem worse if the front tire starts rolling instead of staying planted. There are a lot of dynamic forces involved and it seems a bit hard to predict in the general sense.

Sorry, I gave you some bad information.

The MFWD sensor for eHydro is located in the area on the left side of the seat but it's hard to say if it's above the floorboord or underneath.

The flywheel speed sensor is located somewhere under the fuel gauge sensor.

AFAIK the only source for tech manuals is the dealer. They are worth having but pricey.

The relays really plug in either way? Wow, it doesn't look like they should from the diagram in the tech manual.

First things first. The mid-PTO lockout relay may prevent operation if you are not in the seat or if the rear PTO is also engaged. The seat safety switch could be bad, too, but if the rear PTO works it should be OK. Also, check fuse F5.

A lot of folks have chain hooks welded to the top of their buckets. It's recommended that some gusseting be welded inside the bucket in the rolled area directly under the hooks to reinforce the area.

A leaking head gasket might explain this. If a little moisture is leaking into the cylinder it will turn to steam and as it condenses in the exhaust stream it will turn into black liquid. How's the coolant level? Does the white smoke dissipate like steam?

Sorry to hear about that, and thanks for posting back. With the rear pto access panel it doesn't seem like it would be terribly hard to fix if one knows where to look. Hopefully someone else will benefit from your expensive experience.

Yeah, something along those lines. I may just drill a hole in the cover and use a bungee cord to hold it up while hooking up the pto. I'm tired of that stupid thing doing the tomahawk chop on my arms when making the connection.
