If you post a link to a picture file on your local computer it likely won't work (unless you have your own domain and a static IP address).

There are two options. You can upload your pictures to a free photo hosting service (like photobucket) and post a link to the picture there. You'd post the picture, display it in your browser, then copy the content of the address bar (http://... stuff) and paste it into the Picture/Image URL box.

Or you can click on your name and upload the pics to your tractorpoint account.

What symptoms are you having that makes you suspect that the alternator is not working? If the battery is losing charge, over what period of time is the charge lost and how low does the voltage go?<br>

An alternator naturally produces AC current, however there will be a series of diodes somewhere in the circuit converts it to DC. Usually the diodes are built right into the alternator.<br>

With the engine off the battery voltage should measure about 12.6V. With the engine running the alternator should provide a voltage of probably 13.5-14 volts or so.<br>

If you don't get that voltage it could be the alternator, regulator, or wiring harness. Your alternator may have a built-in regulator. The best way to test an alternator is to take it to an electrical shop (or maybe NAPA) and have them bench test it.

Unless I misunderstand what was proposed I don't see how it can help much. When fuel sloshes all the rust and debris will be stirred up anyway.

I have an electric PTO clutch pack but no pedal. If there's a clutch buried in the hydro tranny somewhere it's news to me.

If the linkage is smooth operating and good the clutch disk may be rusted to the flywheel. If you can get it started in gear and then hold the clutch pedal in while rapidly throttling the engine up and down it might break free.

If that doesn't work a more stressful method might do the job. The idea is to put stress on the clutch disk as the slip point in the drive line. One way is to drive forward with the clutch pedal pushed in and then hit the brakes. Some guys have done it by easing up to an immovable object, pushing the clutch pedal in, and then pushing hard to make the clutch slip.

This is all hearsay on my part, I've got a hydro :)

I know something of emission controls but nothing about that engine. Got a picture you can post? My guess it is one of two devices, either an EGR valve or some sort of evaporative control device.

An EGR valve modulates a small amount of exhaust gas back into the engine intake to reduce combustion efficiency - in the process it lowers combustion temperatures and reduces NOx emissions. I hate the very idea of these. They are fairly easy to identify by looking for a pipe that connects exhaust back to the intake through the troublesome valve.

An evaporative control device might plug the vent opening in the carburetor to prevent gasoline fumes from evaporating into the atmosphere.

Just guessing here.

Still haven't found the numbers? Ouch. This might be a dumb idea but I'll throw it out there. Since Shibaura makes New Holland tractors you might find a current New Holland model that has similar horsepower and number of cylinders and then ask a friendly dealer what the compression should be on that model. It would probably be in the ballpark. You could also call around to some experienced diesel mechanics and see what their estimated numbers might be. I'll bet the numbers all come out fairly close to each other.

Ann, you're right, but most citizens outsource all their thinking to "experts" so even the most nonsensical statements receive little scrutiny.

Take polar ice cap melting as an example. It was discovered that an underwater volcano is erupting under that ice cap. When asked if the volcano could have an affect on the warming temperatures the scientists said, "No", and that ended all independent thought on the topic.

I'm no expert, but round bales vary a lot in weight and can weight up to 1600+ lbs dry (a lot more wet). There's no way to do a big one on your loader. Usually 3-points can lift quite a bit more. The 3-point *might* do it with proper ballasting, you might look up the lift capacity in your manual (sorry, I don't have the specs handy).

Are there any tractors that use 30W motor oil for hydraulics? Our Bandit chipper uses 30 gallons of 30 weight.

Please take no offense. I grew up reading Smokey Yunick articles in Popular Science and other magazines, and have a heck a lot of respect for the guy, but IMO if he wrote the article you refer to it must have been published in the April edition as a joke. My opinion of hybrids is pretty low too, there is probably no such thing as lossless conversion from one form of energy to another, so they must inherently lose efficiency (and they are needlessly complex to boot). An all-electric car with regenerative braking would trump a gas-electric hybrid but my money would be spent on a small diesel. A VW TDI (or their european gasoline compression-ignition engine) already meet or beat hybrids, with far less complexity.

You probably can't buy deep-cycle batteries that have the same specs as a regular battery, at least not in the same size class.

Regular batteries are designed to provide large amounts of current over a short period of time (Cold cranking amps, or CCA) with a relatively small Reserve Capacity (RC). These are for starting engines.

A deep cycle battery of the same size might have half the CCA and twice the RC compared to a regular battery. These are useful for golf carts, trolling motors, backup batteries, etc.

That said, if you find a deep cycle battery that has enough CCA for your tractor it should work fine.
