Got back to this today. It would start and run for a few seconds on ether but wouldn't stay running. Pulled the carburetor and dropped the float bowl. It all looked clean, orifices and jets seemed to be fine but I sprayed it all out with carb cleaner anyway. Put it back together, same problems starting. So I replaced the Honda carburetor with a Chinese made STENS carburetor. Two pulls and it started right up. I'll see how it starts cold tomorrow when I pressure wash the deck.

I may be confusing models or brands but I think those tractors have a tendency to have the ignition switch go bad. Is there power at the ignition switch?

Maybe you can't assume that because some wires aren't connected and a light exists that they are necessarily used on your model. All kinds of stuff has extra wires, connectors, and lights that aren't used. They might use the same harness on a couple of different models for example.

We finally pulled the trigger and traded our '94 Taurus SHO in on a new Subaru Impreza Outback Sport. This is a neat little car, not at all cheap and tinny like the Toyota Corolla I rented a couple of weeks ago. It is pretty well equipped, power everything (except seats), heated everything, great sound system, and very comfortable seats. The only down side is that it's automatic transmission only has 4-speeds, which is sort of behind the times, and the engine has a timing belt instead of a chain. Built in Japan and very solid.<br>

We wanted to trade the Highlander in but the dealer was about 4k low on trade-in, using high gas prices as the excuse. Maybe he's right but I'm sure we can do a lot better selling it as a private party sale. I was happy to get rid of the Taurus, something new was breaking on it every week it seemed.<br>

I'd post a pic but one trip up the gravel road and it's filthy already :( It doesn't do as well on the gravel road as the Highlander but we haven't found any other vehicle that does.

We used to go to flea markets but always brought home a bunch of stuff we didn't need so don't go any more. There always seems to be too much stuff to get rid of anyway. My wife has the "gotta have it" bug, if she likes it she's gotta have it.

The "Change" issue is hilarious. Change is always present. The flip side would be a campaign slogan that says, "Stop All Change!". Couldn't be done. Funny how the specifics of exactly what "change" entails are never spelled out. But people fall for it. It's lunacy.

The downside to AG tires is that they leave tracks and tear up soft surfaces (including turf). The upside is better traction in snow (your case), mud, and soil. That's not to say you'd never need chains depending on conditions.

I had R4 industrial tires for a few months and replaced them with AG due to traction problems on sloped lots, softer and muddy soil, snow, and even dry, powdery clay soil. They're mostly good for hard surfaces, which is what they were designed for.

Some guys recommend turf in snow but it doesn't seem that they would do well in rough woods country.

Specific complaints about those fuel system components don't seem to come along too often (and if problems become too complex I suspect many of us let the dealer sort it out). You could probably jumper across the fuel relay to eliminate that as a possible cause.

Like I said, the logic that extended warranties are generally bad for the consumer is sound. Yet we usually buy them on vehicles and they have always paid for themselves for us.

BTW, it's not always true that extended warranties don't cover "wear and tear" items. I was looking at Subaru's factory extended warranty and it does cover wear items like clutches and brake pads.

We finally took a test drive in an 08 Impreza Outback. It sure feels like very high quality and quite substantial for a small car. The wife really liked it so we'll probably close the deal next weekend. The only complaints I had were that the low profile tires really don't fit the "outback" image and the auto transmission is only a 4-speed (but it's manual mode is pretty cool)<br>

The Toyota dealer loaned us a new Corolla while the Highlander is being repaired. It's not a bad small car but compared to the Impreza it feels quite a bit cheaper. Less features, more noise, doesn't handle as well, a lot cheaper interior. It's not a direct comparison since it's $5k cheaper and not AWD but the Impreza didn't have any of the cheap feel to it.

14.8k seems like a great price. What I know about the NH machines is only a result of lurking and not from personal experience.

Lurking shows that the weak areas of the TC26 tend to be electrical (ignition/starter circuit) and an oil cooler hose that might keep bursting unless a retrofit kit is installed.

Any machine can also be subject to abuse, often accidental. Crawl under it and give it a good exam in all the stress areas looking for cracks, loose bolts, etc. Rear axle, 3ph mount points, backhoe mounts, around the engine bell housing mount points, and front axle. Just give everything a good examination with a strong light looking for things that may not seem right.

Thanks for the pics. That looks simple and easy.

When you said 2x4x8's in the original post I read it as TWO 4'x8' sheets of plywood and couldn't figure out how they were being used. You were clear but my brain was fuzzy.

Anyway, there's a steel building company around the corner that gives away pallets all the time so I'll pick some up and start fiddling with 'em. Thanks again!

There are quick hitch ends, like Pat's easy change, which go on the ends of the lower lift arms. They help a lot but you still have to get off the tractor to make the top link connection.<br>

I went the other direction, with a full three point JD iMatch hitch. There are other models (Land Pride makes one I think) that are a bit more adjustable, but with one of these you don't even have to get out of the seat to change implements (except for those that require pto hookup). This works best when your implements all fit. I modified a couple of implements to make them fit and the investment in time and money was worth it to me.

Lots of rollovers occur on level ground. If you're pulling a heavy load and the hitch point rises above the centerline of the axle the tractor can flip over backwards. Seriously. Be careful out there.

Don't feel bad, there are lots of us lousy negotiators around. It's sort of easy to ask "You gave me a quote, what is your absolute bottom line price?". Then when they give it to you tell them you'll get back to them once you hear from the other guy. They might hem and haw a bit.

If you can't get them to budge on price ask them for extras, like "can you throw in the 50 and 200 hour servicing" or, like Joel said, ask them to throw in filters and fluids if you do the work yourself.

At the very least they need to give you a couple of hats :)
