Murf: Looks like I'll have room for about a 1500 footer, without taking down any trees. Is that enough room for ya?

Yeah, kinda thinking' the same on the tractor. Maybe add something in the 30-50 hp class for brush hogging and hopefully a heavier loader. (Some rock piles to move) Maybe I'll get to know the rental place for a while first.

Earth: You are correct, I stand in error. The fronts are just like a FWD car. However, the design is FAR inferior to the older tapered roller bearing on a hub type of front end.

The front bearings are horribly expensive and are even more horrible to r/r (compared to the lock-out style front end.

Denwood: I would MUCH rather have lockouts than the CAD front on my truck (and so would most others I've talked to). The old NP203 full time transfer case was stout to be sure, but it sucked gas like a monster! The trick with lockouts was to engage them before you got into trouble, then unlock for on the dry road. Not a big deal to me. It is a big deal when you loose a tiny vacuume line and cannot have 4WD from the CAD, or in the case of Chevy's bi-metalic strip the 4WD won't engage when its too cold out.

'Arrow: I'm workng in Antigo now, so my home south of Wausau is a bit too far. We are looking at properties this week/weekend in the area between Wausau and Antigo to cut the commutes in half (wife works in Wausau).

If you look at the two machines closely, you will notice that the Kubota is a miniature farm tractor. The Legacy XL is an enlarged lawn tractor. This is fine if that's all you want to use it for, but most sub-compact owners want more than that. <br>

Things like hydraulics, 3pt and general layout make the Kubota much more usable. (Examples: The construction of the FEL on the Kubota is far superior in weight of construction; the Legacy uses the FEL control for the 3pt, making their combined use impossible.)

I have a very good friend who is a Volkswagon Tech, and he was very vocal in NOT recomenting the Touareg, diesel or gas. They are an electrical nightmare right now. Untill they get all the electrical and computor bugs worked out, they are a $65K boat anchor ($75K for the diesel!).

Glad to hear the "repair" worked for you.

If there is any further problems, this would be a warranty issue that "should" not cost you anything.

Make sure to check the tranny dipstick (on the back of the tractor behind and below the seat) so that you haven't run low on fluid. if you are low, that sump comes filled with "Kubota Super-UDT" from the factory, and should be refilled only with the same.

I agree thats what the national standard is, but,(I don't remember the specifics) state codes can be above and beyond that. The one I was talking about was from Massachusetts or Connecticut (or on the east coast somewhere) that additional tie downs were needed on "wheeled" cargo. Once again, I cannot prove it or provide specifics, but the best bet would be to ask the local DOT for their say in the matter to prevent any fines.

I think you'll find both to be very reliable and high quality tractors. But, you're asking a loaded question, kinda like Fords verses Chevys. Just cause your cousin says "Kubotas eat New Hollands" (or whatever) don't make it so.

You need to go to both dealers and TRY OUT both machines and see which machine fits you better, which dealership gives you a better "feel" for their services, which dealership treats you better and make your decision off of that data. In the end, your dealer relationship and their support will mean a whole lot more to you than what color the hood is painted.

Excellent comparison DR! I've often wondered why people are spending 10's of thousands of dollars on these UTVs and ATVs when a small pickup or "Jeep" type vehicle would do the same or more for MUCH less money, and be legal to drive to town, too!

I had a friend who purchased a used GEO Tracker rather than an ATV for hunting. He had far less money involved, even after a winch, camo paint, lift kit and larger tires, yet the vehicle was still street legal and far more capable as a hunting rig!

Is there something I'm missing?

I would have to agree with the earlier posters and say that both of these tractors are way too small for your needs. Look AT LEAST one or two chassis sizes bigger.

Both filters are functionally the same. One is made in Japan, the other here in the US (I don't remember which). Both will work fine on your tractor, but, of course the larger one would be the preferred one for more capacity and more filter media.

Broken-- Just got a funny picture in my head on your idea: Lift the FEL to lower the ROPS and then hit the header on the barn door with the FEL instead of the ROPS. LOL
