I have been using my Rhino 75 backhoe digging out stumps and it is a great tool. I've learned that moving a tractor a time or two is still much easier than digging by hand and chopping roots with an ax and then pulling with an old farm tractor. I've also learned that children who have grown up joysticks and video games are much smoother operating the hoe than their all thumbs father. Since the hoe came with two buckets I've learned that the 9" one is much better at digging stumps than the 18" one but that the 9" plugs up from time to time with material and is hard to dump. The only downside [other than the neighbors getting their wish lists ready ] was the side to side joystick controllers bolt broke and it took 15 minutes to replace.

Tractorbrad: We all started the same way, slow and clumbsy, but in time it just gets easier. I'm still far from being either good or fast, with using it a couple times a month I don't get enough practice. You're right compard to a spade and an axe it's like you died and went to heaven. Just keep practicing. Frank. ....

The controls are much easier the "feather" if you keep the RPM's, and therefore the hydraulic flow, down.
You will lose very little or nothing in actual digging power as that is dependant on hydraulic pressure after minimum flows are achieved.
I think my backhoe is the best tool I have ever bought.

practice, is the only way to get good. If you have a Hydro moving can be easy. I sometimes need the assistance of a cane when walking so I always keep one hanging on the tractor, I hang it on one of the rear lights/flashers and when on the hoe and need to move a short way I just reach around with the cane & hit the hyrdo pedal needed, of course I don't set the parking brake.

I am very happy with my 7 series hoe for my 790.
It has done everything I have asked for and then some.
You really need to consider what you really need ie.
a tractor with a hoe or a real hoe.
Any thing like a 990 in a hoe I would buy the JD 110 which is a reverse enginered backhoe that is also a heavy duty tractor.
They are built very differently for their own specific reasons !!! ....

Decide what you requirements are Dave and go from there. I see where I'll have alot of use for my hoe for quite some time. I also realize that it not some kind of monster construction rig but having said that just look at all the sub-compact tractors that either come with a hoe or have an after market hoe available. If you have the need / want for a hoe and are happy with your tractor choice then get one. ....

what size bucket would be the best all round size? i'm thinking on a 16 and then add a smaller one later. the 110 is way too big for what i'm needing infact the 990 probaly is also i had heard some negative comment on the 7 hoe however i dont believe everything i hear. in reguards too the power of the hoe as i was reading the post about the shims too increase loader performance will this effect the hoe in the same positive way?or can it be adjusted or tweaked as well in a different way? thanks

Daveknowshow: I don't remember the exact width of my buckets for my Deere #48 hoe, but the only one I really ever use is I think an 18 inch. I do have a real narrow bucket I think around 9 or 10 inches, but it just won't work very well in our heavy clay subsoils, it won't clean when you dump it. I bought the #48 because at the time I had a 4300 tractor, now it's on my 4310. It seems to be big enough for 95% of my needs, but for the real big stuff I hire a big machine. I looked at used regular size hoes at the time, but 25-30,000 was kinda bare minimum to get something that wasn't wore out, so all in all I'm glad to have the #48. Frank. ....
