I am trying to decide about a finishing mower. I want a 72" but I can't decide on a side discharge or a rear discharge. I heard that a rear discharge may streak if the grass is too long and a side discharge may windrow. Also what brand? I am looking for a brand that is rugged and the cutting height is easily changed. I have looked at King Kutter that is a lot cheaper than a Bush Hog, Woods and Land Pride. I need advice. Is this a good time to buy? Are there any special now?

Some of the things I look at start out on the deck itself. I like to see a good spread on the bearings on the spindles. They can put on cast pulleys as well as having the upper bearing being within the pulley for the belt. If it is mounted above then for it to bea s close as possible. Grease fittings should be on all spindles and idlers shafts and the upper deck should be easy to open for maintence and cleaning. ....

I can hereby testify as I type before you that the King Kutter 72" mower deck is worth the money you pay for it. I have had one for over 2 years now and other then bogging the darn thing down in very tall wet grass and eliminating the belt(oops) I have not had a single issue nor a complaint. It is a side discharge and I have found that in tall grass (greater then 8") it will leave a line of uncut grass where the middle and left blades meet, but other than that it does a nice cut, I found that removing the guard on the discharge side eliminates that problem( I dont recommend that if you have bystanders or nearby windows.). I slightly modified the 3pt on mine to fit my quickhitch by moving the links to the inside as opposed to where they were intended to go, and have not had any problems with it. I can hitch it up in about 5 minutes and be on my way cutting. There are grease fittings on every moving part, has multi position wheels, and even on my very uneven ground I seldom encounter scalping, there is one area that will scalp, but that is because it is alongside the road next to a ditch and has a heavy crown. One thing I tried was to put quick release clips on the wheels so I cuold easily adjust them, but found the clips can be removed by an errant bush and I wind up losing the wheel, first time Idid that I sucked it up with the mower and destroyed the tire and rim :(. Since then I have found I dont need to make adjustment and put the original pins back in. All in all it has been a very good buy for me and I expect it to last me a very long time. ....

I have to agree with taheide. I have a 72" King and I love it. The only thing I did was throw the plastic belt/pulley cover away because it was rubbing my deck and causing rust. On the mower one side is blocked with a shield so the discharge goes to the left or right, your choice. I removed my cover and allowed the discharge to go out both sides. I found that less grass got caught under the gear box area which made the mower easier to clean. I did have to have a piece of flat bar welded across the bottom of the area where the 3 point hitch hooks up. This strengthened the entire assembly. I am very satisfied with my KK and would recommed it to anyone looking for a good mower at an affordable price. I paid 1200. for mine 3 years ago. ....

Hmm Never thought to remove both covers, I just pulled the guard off because of clumping. I have only used it twice this year because of the drought. I havent seen any issues with the deck flexing, but I do agree that the cover rubs, but considering all the trees and bushes by me, I would rather have it rub than have something get snagged in the pulleys or belt and fly off and hit me or break something. I think this fall I may strip it and give it a decent coat of paint. ....
