I have 5ft. cutter thats about 10 years old, in good condition. When I engage the PTO with the cutter on the tractor it shakes the whole tractor. I know something is out of balance, but I cant seem to find it. Any sugestions?

STEVEM; First a word of caution, please don't get under the cutter without proper blocking, 3pt's and hydraulics can fail and fall on someone under it. Lots of things could be wrong. Start by checking for broken or bent blades, if it has a stump jumper dish, feel around between the disc and the cutter deck, a rock or something could have gotten in there. If those things check out rotate the blades slowly by hand to check for a bent main shaft. If all that's OK then check the "U" joints in the driveline for a shot bearing or broken yolk. That's about all I can think of, hope this helps. Frank. ....

I'd also check the blade for balance and that it is centered on its mount, or maybe get a new blade. Frank mentioned the driveline and that would include the pto shaft. If the vibration changes as the 3ph is raised, I'd think pto shaft. ....

I think Frank is right on line about safety. Sometimes we tend to forget the simplest things can be disastrous. Please use jack stands!
Also, follow Frank's advice on checking between the 'stump jumper' disc and the bottom of the deck. My neighbor had a piece of root wedged up under his and it shook like a wet dog until we figured out what was lodged up in there.

One other thing...most of those cutters with a 'stump jumper' have cutter blades that are designed to pivot/swing freely on their mounting bolt. Sometimes they can gald up if left sitting for a while, especially over the winter. At first glance it may look as though the blades are in 180 degree alignment but even the slightest offset can cause a vibration.

My manual says to take the blades off and weigh them when sharpening, etc, and make sure they weigh the same or the cutter can be seriously out of balance. But if it was OK before and suddenly started vibrating it almost has to be something else.

5picker; Thanks, I think you solved a mystery for me. This spring when I first used the MX5 cutter it had a shake to it. I shut it down to find the problem, but could'nt find anything wrong, I started it back up and no shake. After thinking about your remark about the blade pivots galding up I'm sure that was the problem. It's worked fine since, perhaps a squirt of oil this fall would be in order. Thanks, Frank. ....
