I'm looking to buy either a Rhino Box with hyd. scarifiers , or Woods bb with lever actuated scarifiers ( 72") ,and an equally heavy rake with guage wheels (84").
OR a York FW rake(84 ") with scarifiers ,blade , etc .
The price is about the same . But the RW York rake only has a 60 " scarifier .
Given the same choices ,what would you folks suggest ?
John

John,
Thats a hard one to answer without knowing what you need to do with the implement.
Hydraulic scarifiers would be nice but the price of the implements with hydraulic scarifiers is high.
For my uses I felt adding hydraulic top and tilt would be more flexible and could be used on several differant implements.

Vince, the woods BB with manually ( lever operated) scarifiers , and the Rhino with hyd scarifiers are within about 50 bucks of each other (from my dealer ). Thereason I want either hyd or lever operated scarifiers is I'm lazy . I can't getting off the machine and pinning six to eight teeth up or down when I need to use them , when all I have to do is pull a lever or move a handle . :)I'm willing to pay for the added convenience . If I add the price of the woods or Rhino rake , it comes out close to the same as the YORK Rw with all the goodies .On it's plus side it's like having two tools in one. The minus is that it's relativelt light ,and the scarifier is only 5 feet wide which is less than the width of my tractor . The York R1 is WAY to expensive ($ 4 K.) As far as usage ... I've got around 800 ft of gravel drive that always needs attention ,Lots of brush ,etc that needs to be moved ,and more rocks than I care to think about that need to be gathered up . As for the tnt .... I was not thinking when I ordered my machine . I only got one remote . Should have gone with all three . That will be remedied when I get the 50 hr service . I'm going to have them add the other two valves . I believe I'll talk over the price of the tnt actuators at the same time .
Seeing as I'm servicing , buying attachments ,and adding remotes all at the same time I might be able to get some break on the pricing . At least that's what I'm hoping for . That's why I posted the original question . I want to be as specific as possible when it comes time to talk prices . John ....

The boxblade would probably be best for driveway maintanance, but won't help much with your brush and rock cleanup.
So if you can only go with 1 implement right now, the rake would be the most usefull for the uses you discribe.
I know you already have a heavy backblade to help with driveway maintanance if needed. ....

Vince , Thanks for the post.!
It's a tough decision ! I can afford the BB and the rake . Or the york . But not all of them :) While I've got a decently heavy rear blade , it won't do the job of the scarifiers . I can do a decent job of gathering brush with my tooth bar , but it won't really do the job as good as a rake . I believe that a good bb and a good rake is probably the way to go ,as the York is sort of a compromise of both . As to the top and tilt .... Gotta have it ! I love moving parts !! And it'll allow me to operate things on the 3ph more efectively . Now to prep the wife for "sticker Shock ! " John ....

I added a few photos to show how my top and tilt works on my Kioti DK 35.
Picture #9 - The small levers in front of the position and draft control levers control my rear remotes.
Picture #10- Is the rear remote couplers
#16 and #17 are my top/tilt cylinders ....

I'd think about the lengths of the implements. Most people use boxes that are at least as long as the rear tire tracks and even longer blades. With a short box the full width of a grade can't be worked and still have both rear tires on the same grade. That would make working close to obstructions and maintaining crowns the full width of drives difficult. Longer blades allow a blade to be angled and still cover the rear tire tracks.

A blade that doesn't have end plates can't be used to cut and drag dirt to somewhere else for spreading. Dirt comes off one of both ends and not much is carried on the blade. I have those aggravating pin scarifiers but they aren't too aggravating because I only need them when cutting new excavations. ....

I have a York rake with gauge wheels, scarifier, and grader blade. It has no hydraulics, only manual settings, and it has never failed to give excellent results. It is one of the few multi-use tools that I've tried that actually works. The issue of only having a 5ft scarifier is actually in your favor if you intend to make gradual turns, as you would in making a walking path. The scarifier is intended for basic straight line work, no drastic turns. If it was wider in length, and you made a tight turn, you would find yourself with a bar full of bent or missing points. But being that it is only 5ft., you can make a gradual turn without harming the implement. But be advised, if you really need a box blade, the York rake isn't what you need. ....

Tom G
Thanks for the post . I've got a woods 84' rear blade . it tilts offsets ,etc . It also has removable end plates . It's pretty versitile (sp ). But I'm in need of something to break into some tough ground with rocks roots etc .
I'm looking at a couple of different makes of bb in the 72" size . The reson I'm looking at the hyd/lever operated scarifiers was stated earlier .... I'm lazy :)
Thanks , John ....

Have you looked at a sub-soiler? Basically a one tooth scarifier..... and pretty inexpensive. Bust up the soil and then go to work with the rake combo. ....

I wonder if the Woods blade could be fitted with a scarifier bar? I'm not sure if the blade angle can be adjusted to a scraping action like a box but if the blade has end plates it will do most of what a box will do plus angles, offsets and tilts. It wouldn't have a rear cutter though and it may not be as heavy as a box. Weight is good since it determines whether the blade will cut hard ground. Abbeywood's comment is good to keep in mind and I find that heavy cuts with just the blade aren't great in turns.

I'm not sure what the ground is like but my box cuts compacted pit run OK without scarifiers. If I use them on long grades the box fills up too fast. What I do use them for is for short shallow excavations when I want to remove a bunch of material over a short distance. I think of them mostly as a supplement to the blade angle for adjusting how fast the box fills and I want them ober the full length of the cutter.

I haven't had to do loosening and grading as separate operations. I don't think they'd be too useful for drive maintenance since ordinarily the ground beneath the finish material shouldn't be disturbed. ....

Tom ,
About the only other thing that woods has for my blade is a guage wheeland skid shoes . . I think that a good heavy box blade and tnt is how I'm going to go . I've got the dealer looking up prices even as I write this . I'm sure it'll cost a bit .
But when it's all said and done it'll be worth it .
Thanks for the tips and suggestions , John ....

ironpeddler .
I,ve looked at your system , and It does interest me a lot . I sent an E-mail to your site a couple of weeks ago .But, didn't get a reply . I probably sent it to the wrong place . That's a very attractive price , Considering it's going to cost me more than that to add the same thing to my machine at the dealers . John ....

I just talked to him today . I see that the site has been updated to include the Joystick and Rops mounting !
I guess it's Dumb question time .. But What is the purpose of the long angle iron box assembly ? and does the joystick mount to it instead of drilling the fender of my tractor ? John ....
