As some of you hear i had to sell my JD 955 because of some pain in the a** neighors. They didn't like looking at it siding in the yard. I bought one of my other neighors tractor(had the same problem), a B7500 which would fit in the shop. (jd 955 to big)
I when to pick up a JD snow blower for a 214 with the loader and i could feel the rear end lifting up. He never had the tires filled. I looked in the manual and i can't find how much counter weight i should have? I am guessing at least 500 pounds. I got a rear blower coming about 400lb. I also got two kubota 95 pound weights coming. How much does it cost to have the tires filled? My JD 955 had that done before i bought it. B7500 w/302 loader on turfs.

I'd try with the weight that you have available. I know that you are familier with the filled tires but we have found that less is better as long as it's not hindering the loader useage. There are things that you might notice, with the smaller wheels and tires you very well will notice a difference in the ride. One not only being heavier but also having the larger tires to help with the ride. ....

I'm not sure about costs since I don't have loaded tires myself. That's good since I drive on the lawn sometimes even if I don't use the tractor for mowing. I depend on 3ph weight when needed for loader work and you might see how yours works with the weights and an implement before loading the tires. Sounds like the neighbourhood association might be highly sympathetic if all those gallons of fill wipped out their 'communally seen' yards. Well guess you could explain that's it's just beet pulp (Rimguard) but I don't imagine they'd see any humour in such a story or anything else probably.

There are mobile tire repair shops most places that will come and do it. I've heard of people buying a valve stem gadget and doing it themselves with drill motor pumps. That's probably cheaper but not easier since you'd have to have containers, mix it if it's not window washer fluid and then dispose of any left over. ....

My rule of thumb, for this class of tractor, is a 1 to 1 counter balance for the loader and then add more ballast to counter the proposed load.

Your loader probably weighs at least 500 pounds so that is a good place to start, just for "driving around weight".

For serious loader work you will need an additional 100 pounds of counter weight for each cubic foot of dirt your loader can hold. You can factor maybe 1/2 of the operators weight into the equation as long as you remember to drop the load to the ground before you dismount the tractor.

Small, short coupled tractors have very light rear ends. Seeing is believing..... look at my #8 photo.

Mark,

There wasn't an anvil or something similar in that bucket by any chance was there?

Or are the clamp on forks that heavy?

Plots no i am not. How much paint would it take to paint it John Deere green and yellow. Both tractors have their ups and downs. I miss my JD 955, it had more power.

I was like a kid on christmas day when i got it. The tractor was babied. The guy even waxed the tractor monthly. Its the nicest used machine i have bought yet.

The tractor is only being used as a loader. I hope to get a backhoe for it someday. Someday being like next week if i had the money. I plan to get a woods 72" rake and 60" blade in the spring. Sold my other rake when i sold the JD 955. So i am guessing getting the tires filled is a good idea. My mother needs to be able to use it for her gardens, when i am not around. I want it as safe as possible, we have a pretty good grade in the back. thanks ....

I didn't think you would be as happy with it as you seemed to be pretty happy with your old green one. all in all I'm sure it's a fine machine you have now and will surely work out fine for you, best of luck. and ya you could just splash a little on it . LOL ....

Parker: the clamp-on's weighed 90 pounds. There was nothing else in the bucket and no tricks.... I'd estimate I was lifting about 200 pounds. ....

Mark just for fun i went and jumped up and down on the bucket. All 210 pounds of me. I could see the back end wanting to come of the ground. That was scaring me. I have my sister(130LB) stand in the bucket and see if i can lift up the back end. I can't wait until friday and call a tire service to come and fill the tires. Well i am off to unwrap more presents. ....

Before adding too much counterweight remember this, you sold a tractor and purchased a "toy". You went from a machine made from cast iron like it should be, to a tractor built from aluminum castings and thin sheet metal stampings. If you add enough weight to keep the rear end down and you try to do serious work, at some point in time it will snap! Just the facts and nothing but the facts. ....

Going smaller is the toughest thing to do when looking at tractors. The tractor you have will never be what you had but you can still have an excellent performing tractor! Front forks are a killer when extending out the front of the tractor bucket and require more wheight for counter balance. The rear tires being loaded will definitly help you. Kubota offers a factory weight box for the three point hitch that will give you another 500lbs ballast on the rear if needed. ....

Hurliman, from your handle I know where you are coming from. If ballast is used as recommended he will do just fine with the steel frame that they use to build these tractors the same as one built out of antiquated cast iron molds that might have difficulty with consistancy of the product. ....
