I am new to this forum. Aslo new owner of an old Satoh Beaver passed on to me through an estate.
It is a 4 x 4 machine and it seems to be stuck in 4x4. The lever that says its to switch it in and out will not move. Am I missing something here? I know from using someothers that it might take another lever, peddle etc. to allow it to work.
I would appreciate knowing what the trick is.
Curt

You asked if the lever moves, no it does not. I tried a number of combinations, in and out of gear, clutch in etc., but no luck moving it.

Mine had gotten progresively harder to move til it just stuck. I took the two bolts out that hold the shift lefter to the side of the housing and found the shaft to be rusted badly ! Just took apart and cleaned all the rust off of the shaft and then lubricated it with a never sieze compound. Has worked free ever since . It is a very easy fix. Do not be intimitaded by it . ....

Thank you for the idea, I will check it out. The little tractor spent most of its life outside in the rain in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. I had a repair and service shop go through it. The hydrolic system did not work all the time. The farm where it was had been sold and the clean up guys were trying to get it working. Kept adding oil to the hydrolic system and it kept boiling out. The service guy drained it, it was totally full of ....water!
I presume my in law had never ever changed the fluid. It had been in storage for about 5 years, but it ran fine.
Thanks for your help.

Since it was full of water, you will probably have the hydraulics fail in the future. There is a screen in the suction line in the transmission housing that will catch the moisture that didn't get drained. ....
