Anybody familiar or ever use a Dig it or similar portable backhoe. I was looking to put a hoe on my TC33D when I saw one of thse for sale. supposedly more force than a tractor mount. Has an 18hp kohlar engine. Thought it might better than having to take hoe off and on to use other implements which I do often. Also save wear and tear on tractor.

I have had two small hoes, and both were capable muscling around the tractor to which they were attached.

In the case of my 4115, that 6.5 foot hoe will easily pull/push around a tractor with a total operating weight of 4100 pounds.

I can't imagine how an unattached backhoe could operate without being tethered/anchored to something very heavy. ....

It's a case of NOT biting off more than you can chew. Force is rather a moot, subjective measure unless it can be harnessed, it is also misleading since it is purely a function of physics, PSI x surface area of piston, period.

I have a full-sized TLB, it weighs about 20,000 pounds, but as Mark noted with his machine, the hoe will still easily drag it around.

These little machines are capable of doing tremendous work, relatively speaking, we see them in use constantly in our work, but unless you are talking about digging as close as possible to directly beneath you they aren't going to get you very far very fast. They are usually referred to as 'hydraulic labourers' because that is about what they are, a gas-powered replacement for a labourer with a shovel. The ones I have seen lots of them towed behind a tractor and powered by a free-standing PTO-driven pump.

Having said that, they are very handy, not to mention affordable, and are probably all the casual user needs.

Best of luck. ....

My use would be around the house digging up tree stumps, trenches, footers that kind of stuff. It's specs report more force than the tractor mount I was looking at. I just questioned how much it can do weighing so little. I'm sure it could dig a ditch but, how about ripping out a stump? ....

Tree stumps take a surprising amount of force, they're stubborn son-of-a-guns.

If you picked at it slowly it will come out, but not without a good fight.

Everything else you want it for is fine, it will be slower than a big machine, but faster than a shovel.... you decide.

Best of luck. ....

We had a Mini Hoe powered by a Honda motor. The thing was so light, you had to leave it hitched to the car/tow vehicle with the trans in neutral and the parking brake on, otherwise, it would drag itself all over the place. It did okay digging 30" deep holes for planting trees, but I wouldn't consider it a serious digger. I'm much more impressed with the BH on the BX22. ....
