Roundup that you buy in the Home Depot etc. is the "baby milk" version of what the farmers use to keep the EPA happy. Go to the local COOP or Tractor Supply Store and buy the smallest container of Glyphosphate you can find. Mind you now this is some REALLY pricey stuff but very concentrated and effective. The Army stuff you are referring to I believe is "2,4,D" which is used in many herbicides in varying amounts. Glyphosphate ins the generic name for concentrated Roundup by the way. It works most effective when mixed with a surfactant (i.e. glycerin or a good soap/detergent). Mix up a batch and spray it and I think you will see a difference. My family uses this stuff to kill all the vegetation prior to planting since they "No till" farm. Works great for them. Vinegar, and salt will also work but salt takes a LONG time to be absorbed by the soil and the soil may end up barren for years. Just ask any farmer that has broken a NaCl filled tire open in a field. ....

Chief,
In regards to the vinegar and salt, would that just be a matter of sparying the ground with vinegar, spreading salt, waiting for it to be absorbed, and whala, problem solved?
I have property that borders a lake, where I have rip rap stone 6' high, on a 45d angle, along the bank. Large weeds, small weeds, small trees, even grass grow up between the rocks, and a couple times a year I have the task of walking the rocks and pulling them up. I am hesitant to use a strong chemical due to the run off entering the lake (not that high quantities of vinegar is). Would this be a good alternative, and is there a certain method of broadcasting that will yield high returns?
BH ....

Your talking about alot of vinegar and salt but you can mix it up and spray it out of a hand held pump up sprayer. Mix the salt in a solution of hot water as strong as possible and then add the vinegar. An old guy I cut grass for does this and swears by it. Not much if anything is growing where he sprayed it. For a sure fire vegetation killer, I would use the glyphosphate. It breaks down in the soil fast and is not toxic. (at least that is what the sellers tell the farmers). ....
