Why not just buy it new from JD? You'd be lucky to beat the price, and the kit comes with hoses and all the mounting parts. Roger L ....

I believe you can buy the ROPS at cost from your local JD dealer, as part of JD'stractor safety concerns. ....

I'm thinking of adding a power steering kit to my 85 JD650.
Aside from the cost, is there any downside that I should know about? ....

Jim, would you let us all know if JD is still carrying the complete PS kit for the JD650? The messages in this thread are several years old. I have heard rumors that JD is discontinuing some of the otional equipment for the X'50 series tractors. ....

I called my local JD dealer and was told that the power steering kit for the 650 is still available, however, the ps kit and line kit comes out to $980 plus tax. ....

Thanks for checking. Nice to know that they still have it. A couple of years back the whole think was a kit with hoses for $871, so the price has gone up a little. Seems worth it to me if you have a loader on a JD 650; otherwise not. ....

Jim,
You asked i there was any downside. If you do have a loader, you might notice slower cycle times since the power steering diverts 2 gallons per minute of hydraulic flow to the steering valve. some people find this unacceptable especially if your hydraulic pump is worn already. A higher flow pump may be available but I am not sure. ....

Jim, Kenny has a real good point. Last I checked, the JD power steering kit did come with a priority valve which divides the flow up just as you say. I haven't personally seen much reduction in the flow rate of gear pumps with moderate wear, but a person has to keep in mind that tractor hydraulic pumps are rated at some speed....often PTO speed. Below that speed they put out a lesser flow rate. And just like you say, that priority valve will permanently divert a portion of the flow. What this means is that if all your pump is putting out at idle is 2 gallon/minute, then nothing except the power steering will work until you rev the engine. Even if you don't use the power steering at idle, that portion of the flow is not available to the loader; it is reserved for power steering only. What this means is that if you add power steering you can expect to be gunning the motor when you work the loader. And even so, the loader will work slower. The lifting capacity of the loader is unaffected. I think the PS is worth the slower cycle rate, but others might not. If you absolutely hated it, then you could add a front mounted hydraulic pump....more dollars....It is something that needs to be considered. Thanks, Kenny. ....
