I have a IH 244 18hp 2wd compact tractor. I use a rear blade to push the snow with mimimal success. (not enough weight) Is a rear mount snowblower the answer. I have a 200ft. driveway and get pleanty of NY ski country white stuff.

Generally blowers take less traction than blades. However, I wouldn't want to say that a blower is going to cure the problem.

I have a 3ph blower on my 24 pto hp tractor with turf tires that weights about 3,500 lbs. including loader and blower. When there's some snow pack behind the shed I have to use 4wd just to get out, though the diff lock probably would get me over the hump. However, I have little traction difficulty in 4wd either using the blower or stacking and pushing moderate amounts of snow around with the loader. In 2wd I think I'd probably want chains even with the blower, and chains on the front to improve steering might be good even for 2wd.

You might try chains first and see if a blade plus chains does the job OK before buying a blower. On the other hand, if there's not enough space to push snow off to the side, a blower might be a better idea whether there are traction problems or not.

I do have people useing that size tractor with a blower. It is tough though, without the hydro, to adjust to the speed that you need and to be able to keep the blower clean. ....

We do sell a lot of new snowblowers to customers with your size tractor and 2 wheel drive--I would stay with about a 50 inch model. ag tires or R4 tires are a + to have. I dont think turf tires would work well.--Ken Sweet ....
