I have a chance to purchase a stiener 525 thats been used extensively but the asking price seems to good to pass up! It has a kubots diesel running but tired and a 5' mower deck. The owner has to remove immediately from his storage and offer it to me for seven hundred dollars. From a quick research I believe its worth it even if I have to rebuild it. Can anyone back up my thinking on this?

On another page somebody is looking to rebuild a Ford 1510. From a NH dealer he was quoted over $3,000 for a rebuilt short block, $1500 for a head assembly and almost $200 each for injectors not including labour. Doing the work himself using parts from NH and local machining or a partial rebuild might knock the price down a bit.

As long as the tractor was split, a new clutch and shift rails would be a good idea and probably add to costs. Anyway, it starts sounding like the price of a decent serviceable used tractor pretty fast if major rebuild work is needed.

If he is able to do the work himself, plans to keep the tractor a long time and doesn't care how much time is required, finds another 1510 for salvage or doesn't mind some unreliability it might be good economically.

I've rescued a few unusual cars and motorcycles from the scrap heap myself. It usually took a lot of time and money and the results were less reliable than just buying something already serviceable. However, it might make better sense if you want a Steiner rather than just any serviceable tractor. I went through years of aggravation to keep my '52 Nash-Healey on the road (about half the time). I sure wouldn't have done it to drive a beater of a Chevy just to get around town.

I know I'm kind of trashing your idea, but I'm just throwing out perhaps an over-statement for the sake of perspective. Well, I do have several 5HP BS push mowers and working on another because my wife likes them. The cost of buying another junker is less than a rebuild kit for the engine.

Actually its a 425 not a 525. I got the owners manuals today. the mower deck is a md460. I stopped by my local Steiner dealer today and told him my story. He said he didn't think I could go wrong for the $700.00 He offered to help me in anyway including a good supply of used parts he has. I guess I am going to pick it up this Saturday. It wouldn't be the first restoration that I spent more then the item was worth. But hey working on its half the fun. Oh yeah I'd love to trade my last project for a Backhoe...a 1985 Corvette that I invested 16 grand in parts alone. ....

Well there you are. I remember the fun parts of restoration too and that can certainly be a worthwhile end in itself.

Who knows I might get back into it myself. Even you wife is talking about building an equipment shed next year. She wants implements out of the yard and something better to look at than my 14' x 25' arctic shelter tent that now serves as a shed. What I'd get out of it is an actual shop 'cause I really can't do any serious mechanics now.

Well, I think I even know where a basket-case of a Brit Bike is. Wonder if I still have any shop manuals and if could find all my Whitworth tools? Maybe I'd even have cause to tinker with my father-in-law's South Bend lathe. Yes, I remember the fun too and hope you have a bunch of it.

Well, I went to pick up the 425 and guy was very busy that day. After waiting for two hours for him to show up he fianally made and explained he wasn't sure he wanted to sell it any longer. I thought great he knows what he has all of the sudden. When inquire as to why he would make me go through all this trouble and not sell it to me..he said he felt wrong about selling it to me in the condition it was in so he would sell it me but not for the agreed up $700 BUT $300. as is. Well this no brainer just got easier. I loaded that tractor up and got out there like I stole it...because I did at that price. Within and hour of getting it home I had it running. Tomorrow well see what it can do. ....

That's a good story. It's also one that I understand because people around here are the same way. You just don't want to stick people with something that's not going to work no matter how low the price. It's sort of the opposite of 'Let the Buyer Beware.' ....

You stole that Steiner. Great Machine! I have a 430 Max and think it's a real neat tractor. I found it was a little tough to work on though. It's so compact, you have to take apart a bunch of stuff to get at what you want too. It's worth it though, for $300.00 that was a heck of a steal!!! ....
