I originally posted this on the JD Owner Forum before I spotted this Forum - sorry about that! Thought I'd copy it over to this spot too:

I've been looking into getting my first compact tractor and have pretty much settled on the 790 as I'm not doing that much continuous heavy work with it. Pricing on the unit (4wd,mid pto, turf tires) at 11,700 seems in line and the 70 loader at 2695.00 in the ballpark. However, I got the price on the 7 backhoe attachment this morning and am still suffering sticker shock.....$6299.00 with rear hyd??? whewww that seems like a lot or am I just needing a welcome to the real world of attachment prices? It being over 1/2 the cost of the tractor seems plenty. Thoughts? Opinions?

Thats John Deere RETAIL, welcome to the real world of JD. I paid 6300 in 2000 for a #48. Woods makes a good hoe, the 7500 should do just fine for the 790.

I guess whether it's worth it depends on intended uses for the hoe. I think the JD hoes and mounts are strong and also make it easy to mount and remove the hoe. Some older and 3rd party sub-frame mounts are very inconvenient. Some 3rd party hoes are priced less and have reputations for strength and durability that should be as good as a JD hoe. The mounts may not be as good, but that wouldn't be a big issue unless the hoe is taken on and off frequently.

I don't use my hoe every month and the work isn't particularly heavy. A Kelley 3ph hoe works fine for me. The hoe is on the small side for the tractor and I simply recognize that a 3ph hoe places more stress on the tractor frame and can't be used as heavily as a sub-frame mount. The price was a lot less than 1/2 the tractor.

I agree with DSG's reply that J.D,'s retail price structure is a liitle out of line. I to am running a Woods 7500 subframe backhoe on my TC29, with the hydraulics off of the tractor. Its a great unit, and only takes 5 minutes to attach or remove. Price was $5500 installed. Great bend also makes a good after market backhoe. I heard somewhere that they might make the BH's for J.D. ....

Ravenn,
I just noticed this from someone elses post. I don't know the first thing about the Puma equipment, but at least it gets you something more reasonable. Let us know what you find out. http://www.puma-machinery.com/page810978.htm ....

Amerequip OEMs their backhoes to John Deere, Bush Hog, and Great Bend. If you visit each of their sites, you will notice the similarity between all of their backhoes. I stumbled across this while doing some research on the Bolens Iseki Diesels. When Amerequip was Arps in the early 80s, they also made blades for the Bolens 2-cyl diesels. Check out the last paragraph in the Company Profile tab if you don't believe me! ....

Did some checking on Amerequip and Great Bend (sure looks like a JB 7 backhoe to me) and found the following prices:

Amerequip 6600, 3pt adapter, 16" bucket, powerbeyond adapt. $5200 pto pump & reservoir option $595.00

Great Bend 652, spec'd same as the Amerequip $4800.00
pto pump & res $685.00

just thought i'd pass the info along

From the prices, I'd guess that all these hoes are sub-frame mounts. Amerequip's 3ph adapter probably is a sub-frame.

I'm curious about the price including both a power-beyond adapter and a pto pump. I'd guess that the hoe valve assembly has power-beyond capability so it could be run from a tractor's auxiliary hydraulics. The adapter probably is for the hoe valve when running it from a pto pump where power-beyond isn't needed. The adapter might be just a t-fitting.

Some hoes also can be used with either open or closed centre hydraulic systems, but the set ups are different. Sounds like equivalent hoes can be gotten directly from manufactures at lower prices than those with tractor brands. Without dealer setup, it’s a good idea to have some background in hydraulics.

Northern has what looks like the 6600 for $5000.00 They quoted me $416 in shipping to Nevada.
My dealer priced the same package at $6100.00 but I didn't ask if it included installation.
Northern also lists a Great Bend model for larger tractors. ....
