According to my Yanmar owners manual it states to only use genuine Yanmar oil filters because it has a special bypass valve. Is anyone using any non-Yanmar oil filters. If so, have you had any problems.

I would like to know if there is any truth to the statement made in my owners manual.

Thanks

I have come to a conclusion after reading the opinions on this board, especially those of some of the well educated folks like Dr. Peters. Spending that extra buck and a half once or twice a year for the recommended filter is damn cheap insurance, especially when balanced against any risk of engine damage. ....

I've been using NAPA and FRAM oil and hydrolic filters for my Yanmar 180D (18 hr 4wd) since it was new. I was the original owner and I've changed to oil filter at least times using NAPA or FRAM filters.

In my opinion buying YANMAR FILTERS just adds to the cost.

Before using the FRAM FILTERS I wrote FRAM and they replied using their filters would work fine.

Jimmy, I haven't heard anyone say bad things about Napa. There are some stories in the archives about collapsed Fram’s and engine damage. Some folks who disassemble and test oil filters have said that Fram changed the product (made it cheaper) to meet Wal-Mart’s price ceiling.
I have a flyer on my desk offering genuine Toyota oil filters “approved and engineered element with an anti-drain back valve” for $4.99 for my Tundra and my Camry. And I have to drive past the Toyota dealer to get to Wal-Mart.
I’ll probably use 5 filters in the next 4 years for each car and I am averaging about 60 hours a year on the tractor so far, so if I change the oil at 100 hours like it says in the book, or go 150 hours with Deere’s semi-synthetic as they now suggest, I am buying a filter every two years. I can’t find any significant savings in non-OEM filters around my house. I’ll stick with my statements above.

I've been around this world for a while now, seen lots of tractors.........I have never heard of a confirmed bad filter problem about any brand of filter. Iv'e heard rumers, and witness personally accusations of disatsified customers of many filter brands.....But never have seen evidence that supported the accusations or the rumors.

I was involved in a case involveing a Baldwin brand air filter on a J D engine. And accusations were made, as the selling dealer of the tractor, we were caught in the middle.
Thank God we have a few Techs in our shop with cool heads, and the nack for solveing mysteries....turns out, the cust. performs all his own P.M. and the tech on the overhaul job found part of an old seal stuck to the inside of the air filter canister that prevented a good seal......problem solved.....he even had the presence of mine to leave the old seal parts in tact until the cust..and Baldwin's folks to see it.

No bad filter.........just bad home service..... ....

I have seen good and better filters. I will repeat what I look for in a filter. I inspect the inside of the filter for the amount of media, the depth and the number of pleats in the filter media. It is difficult to check the quality of the media unless I cut the filter and check the pore size and distribution on a porometer, which I don't have at my disposal right now.
Next I check the quality of the seal. I prefer the silicon seals, buna-N can deteriate in hot oil and can be attacked by diesel oil.
Finally I check the can thickness and the construction.
I do not normally buy OEM, my last purchase was the STP's. For the Diesel truck they are the same as Mobil 1 at 3x the price. I checked the Fram again which has increased quality since Allied Signal merged with Honeywell.
My recommendation to a Yanmar owner is to travel the the JD dealer and use their filters if the Yanmar are expensive. I buy the JD at near 3 dollars and I am sure that they will meet Yanmar specs.
Incidently I am less than impressed with the MF/Agco filters, at least for my old tractor. ....

Am I guilty of reading between the lines? I think Eric just said there was a time when, in his educated and valued opinion, the quality of Fram oil filters (or as George Foreman sez..oall filters) took a big dump. Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the prosecution rests, or at least goes back to the kitchen for another cup of morning coffee.

I think the history of Fram goes:

Ford Autolite

thenspin off to
Bendix

then spin off to
Allied Signal

Allied Signal / Honeywell Merger Now part of
Honeywell

I am positive about Allied Signal and Honeywell as current and prior. I used to work at Allied.

I do think in all of these transitions with profitabilityan issue cost reduction/Market share growth became very important.

The same thing happened to Smith & Wesson in the 70’s and 80’s. They got passed around the corporate world like a cheap cigar and the finest revolvers in the world became somewhat flawed in terms of quality. For a while there everyone was chewing on their backside, even the president (note the small p) of the united states. So I guess if S&W can return from the grave, which they have, and are now producing the finest, most accurate revolvers in their history, maybe Fram can resurrect itself too. It would be useful to get the straight dope on the improvements to the product line though. ....

I have done a lot of research on oil filters. You have to look at the reviews on line where they cut filters in half and took them apart to get a good review. Fram is the worst filter on the market. It's filter material is nothing but cardboard. The best is the Napa Gold. It has a thicker metal casing and a 1 micron filter. Wixs is right there with Napa Gold in quality and also a 1 micron filter. Wixs has a larger selection with all the manufactors filters. I use Wixs filter on all of my cars and tractors. I use Mobil 1 synthetic oil in my vehicles and Rotella T in my tractors.
Hope this help someone. ....

Amazing how some of these old threads pop up.

Seventeen years later I am still using OEM filters on my Toyota trucks and my Kubota tractor. Well now that I think about it, I even use OEM from Koehler for the engine on the 'bota riding mower. Nary a problem, ever.

Cheap insurance. Like buying decent self defense ammo. After the shooting and you get your pants changed are you going to wonder if that dollar per round ammo was worth it? Maybe you could have gotten by with the 50 cent stuff? Nah. I think not.

I do agree 100% with the Mobil 1 and Rotella Synthetic comments. Unless you actually see the interior of an engine with 100K on the clock and NO measurable wear of the contact and bearing surfaces it is hard to believe how good the stuff really is. ....

Hi Mark,

I think I should try being you again, my wife and I sound like the the old Jerry Stiller and Mira routine most of the time.

Fram has gotten on the band wagon of up selling the consumer and now offers all sorts of purportedly Premium filters, not sure that was the case 17 years ago. I think it is more hype than fact.

Fram Extra,Tough, Ultra, and Racing Guard Filters. All step up priced.

For a long time I too was stuck on OEM filters for our units, then we got a batch in (we order in bulk for the fleet and got a decent discount for doing so) after a long back-order and low & behold, the filters were NOT white with blue stenciling as usual, they were standard FleetGuard filters.

When we questioned it the parts guy remarked that OEM filters were just custom labelled FleetGuard filters.

As an avid devotee of Euro cars I discovered long ago that almost all "OEM" parts are available as the 'normal' brand name as well, usually at a STEEP discount to 'stealership' parts prices.

Want proof? Go to a 'Bota dealer and have the parts folks give you the price for a standard Pioneer QD fitting as a KUBOTA part using their part number. It is about 10 times the price that they actually sell the Pioneer brand fitting for.

Best of luck. ....

DRankin.
Where can you get Wix and Napa Gold filters for 50 cents? They are just as high as OEM filters. I believe you should use the best filters that you think is the best for your engine. If you go to youtube and look up the worst oil filter ever by the DoRite Fabrication you might understand why I use Wix filters.
I really believe you need to use OEM filters while your tractor or vehicles are under warranty so if you have any problems with your engines it want be your fault. But not all OEM parts are better parts.
I have a Kubota tractor that I like using Wixs filter, Rotella T6 engine oil and I use the OEM UDT2 hydraulic Oil. This is just my opinion and Ive only been using Wixs for around 12 years and so far so good.

DGL1253, I think you may have missed a metaphor. But in all fairness I frequently provoke that response in people and it is a burden I have learned to bear.

Dennis and Murf: Wow, just like old times. Good to know you are both still out there and percolating.

Back on topic: I guess part of my thinking is influenced by the fact I DON'T have a fleet to service. I buy an average of two oil filters a year and when I need those two I go where I know they got 'em in stock.

Might save $3 to $5 going elsewhere but I might have to go to 3 to 5 stores to find what I need. So the savings go into the gas tank when you live several miles from town and you drive a 1/2 ton V-8 something..

OEM is at least predictable (adequate) quality. Walmart/Fram? Not so much.

Keep percolating guys. Or at least perambulating. There I go again (!)

Good to see both of you Mark and Murf! Belated happy Father's Day. Hope you both are doing well.

When I got around to filters and maintenance on my Kubota RTVX-1000C, this video pretty much summed it up for me. I use the OEM Kubota filters.

This video confirms Murf's point on the rebranded Fleetguard filters.

As always Mark you are spot on, for a couple of filters a year (as long as the dealer isn't too far out of the way) it wouldn't pay to shop around.

As you touched on though, servicing a fleet is a whole other deal, we buy an average of 60 filters a month in the summer and about half that a month in the winter.

Best of luck. ....
