I am considering buying a used #7 backhoe for my JD 855 tractor, it's seems like a decent used one goes for around $3,500. Does anyone have any experience with this backhoe ?? I am worried that it is to small to do much of anything. Also, $3,500 seems like alot. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

$3500 for a good used #7 isn't bad. You won't find many at that price, Also you shouldn't put anything bigger on an 855. I had a 755 before I bought the 4700 and I don't think the frame work will take anything bigger.

The #7 is a perfect match for the 855. It will do a lot of work, as long as your expectations are reasonable. Don't expect to excavate for a new basement in a day - or dig a 2 acre pond. But if you want to trench for water or hydro, plant trees, create ditches or any other job suited to the size of your tractor, it will work extremely well. I have one, use it regularly, and wouldn't be without it. It takes less than 5 minutes to attach or remove, and beats a shovel hands-down. I've used mine for everything listed above, except my pond is a lot smaller, and the basement excavation took a lot longer!! Sure - I'd like a bigger machine! But I'd like a track excavator and a dozer too. I'm happy with my #7, and am sure you will be too. You can't have mine for $3500.

Big Eddy is right on the money. I had an Arps 70 which is similar to the JD #7, except it has no sub frame, mounts on the 3-pt hitch and works off a PTO pump not the tractor hydraulics, on my JD850. Dug a 1000' irrigation trench, transplanted 50' trees, dug holes for big maple tree transplants that came in by tree spade, did fencing when my auger hit rock, etc. It is slow--a little like digging sandcastles at the beach with a tablespoon. $3,500 is about right. You might knock the price down a smidgen. Remember you'll probably sell it for what you bought it for when you are finished. I'd say close the deal and get to work. ....

thanks for your responses, it is nice to know that someone else has been happy with the performance of the 7 backhoe. One more question... my 855 currently has a curtis cab on it, can the 7 backhoe be attached while the cab is mounted ???
