Can anyone recommend an economical post-hole digger attachment for my Kubota BX2200 sub-compact tractor?

I think that posthole augers, like 3ph snow blowers, are implements that are manufactured by many regional fabrication shops. There probably are some 'name brand' PHA's but they may not be the most economical available. Dealers tend to know the small fabrication shops in their areas and know which ones have made successful products. I heard a half-dozen brand names, none of which I recognized, before I took my dealer’s recommendation. I still don’t know the name of my PHA.
There is an issue of ground clearance when putting PHA's on compacts. BX's have lower ground clearances than many and are more limited in the size augers that can be mounted. Most PHA's have three sets of mounting points for the top-link bracket (PHA's don't use top-links). The mounting positions adjust the PHA's ground clearance and a PHA for a BX almost certainly should have them.
I think there was a discussion here where an auger that mounted on a BX was mentioned. I think it's depth was limited to 3' though. I'm not sure if the 3' was the length of the auger bit or how deep a hole actually could be dug. My auger bit is about 3' but I can dig over 4' deep by burying the shaft and half the gearbox in the hole. It does mean that I have to pull the auger up periodically when digging to clear some dirt out of the hole.
Extensions can be put on most any auger to dig deeper. Extensions are a pain though. Generally, a tractor can't be driven with an extension on the PHA because the auger drags the ground. A hole has to be partially dug, the auger disconnected from the shaft and the extension installed. The extension then has to be removed while the auger is in the hole before the tractor can be moved.

Gearmore has a line of implements specifically designed for our small tractors and some stuff sized just for the BX series. You never hear their name mentioned on the board, but I have been very impressed with the quality and design of Gearmores stuff. For some reason the website does not detail the compact tool line but there is a phone number to call for info. ....

The gearmore post hole digger is made by danuser. I own one. I paid 2/3 the price of brand names for mine (under 600 with tax for digger with one bit). Haven't used it yet so can't tell you how well it works. ....

WE have been selling a "Greenline" special digger for sub- compact tractors for several years--It will dig about 42 inches. It has narrow and standard width catagory 1 lower hitch pins and does not have the ground clearance problem that regular diggers have. Ken Sweet

fractal- Thanks for the info on the Gearmore PHD- after pricing the JD unit, I was planning to go cheapo because this implement will be used only occasionaly- I was even looking at the one that Northern offers- it is made in USA. But if I can get a genuine Gearmore for the price you mentioned, I'll go that way. Like Mark says, we don't hear much about Gearmore here, probably because it's not available back east, but for us out west I think it is wise to see what Gearmore offers before shelling out for any implement. My understanding is that Gearmore is not a manufacturer, but a jobber, and they seem to be very careful about putting their name on a product- the Danuser connection substantiates that. At present, my only Gearmore implement is a GR300 ripper, which is very stout and well designed, but when I finally get around to getting to a compact, most of the implements will be from Gearmore. ....

What Gearmore dealer did you buy your digger from? I checked out the Danuser site directly and they are quoting over $1K plus shipping for the G20/40 with 9" auger. Heck, even JD was less expensive (they put their name on Rankin diggers at my local dealer). Thanks.

How did you ever make out with your PHD? I have a Leinbach PHD L7300 model on the back of my orange. I have had it now for about 4 years...put in alot of telephone pole cutoffs for fence posts.
I had my choice of auger sizes when I bought it new, I grabbed the 9" auger which gives me about a 10" -11" diameter hole. Works great! Paid $300 for it.

I have a 40" Gearmore posthold digger that is 12" in diameter. I know however that your 2200 can handle no larger than a 36". as far as the diameter I think you can go for the largest. I love mine. It has 5 replaceable cutting edges that can be turned once before needing to be replaced. It only takes one forth of the time to cut a hole through rock (I have granite all over the property) that it took with the 8" 2 man plst hole digger that I used previous to purchaseing my B7800 and the Gearmore digger, its great. The second day I had it I dug 10 holes with it, and that was only the third day of tractor use. Hope this helps. ....

I was reading a posting you had for a digger from Leinbach and wanted to know your opinion on the unit. I just purchasec a bx22 and am looking for a reasonbley priced rig that will last. I called and talked to Leinbach today and they have a 7200 JR. model that digs to 42". They were hesitant to recommend it for the bx because of its height. What is your impression?

The Kubota dealer here in the Ft. Worth area sells and AGMEIER ED32, called a 32" lite, for use on the BX series tractors. Problem with using most PHD on the BX is they are too long and you can't raise high enough for ground clearance. The ED32 is CAT 1 and comes with a 6" single flite auger for $597.00. ....
