Does anyone know of a company who makes a lawn roller that will attach to a category 1- 3 point hitch?
I have a narrow area to roll and backing in with a tow behind is impossible.
I'd like to be able to raise the roller and set it down after I back in to the starting point.

Northern Tool @ www.northern-online.com carries a line of low cost implements. I think I've seen a roller in their on-line catalogue. Shipping charges might be pretty steep though. ....

Tom; basic physics, if you place all the weight of the roller on the back wheels then the psi of the tire print will be nearly as great than the roller. Norhtern does sell rollers. I believe you can get some that are PE and water filled. ....

Tim, if you already have a lawn roller buy a 3pt boom. Put a couple of shackles on each side and pick with the boom. The the 3pt roller would have to get picked each time you turn or it will scuff. PLUS when you need good solid lifting you can not beat a 3pt boom. ....

I'd guess there's greater psi on the ground with the 3ph up since both the tractor and roller weight would be distributed over the tire/ground contact, which would be a smaller area than the roller contact. Similarly, I seem to recall that flotation tires don't increase traction much compared to turfs even though the flotation tires are much wider. The same weight is distributed over a greater area, which reduces pressure on the ground.
I seem to recall that back in the days of records, typical stylus pressures were in the range of hundreds or maybe thousands of psi. No wonder records wore out and it must have taken something the equivalent of Mt. Everest to make them skip.
Another matter of basic physics that took awhile for it to sink into my head is that an implement doesn't provide rear ballast when the 3ph is floated. I don't imagine the Norther rollers are shipped filled--don't figure that what is meant though.

My buddy uses an old upright hot water heater for his roller. It is the gas type rather than electric, so it has a continuous hole right down through the middle. He put a piece of water pipe in that hole and from there brought two arms forward to his three point lift arms. Started with it filled with water, and finally filled the tank with wet cement. It doesn't lift via the 3 pt. He can pull it with the 3pt arms or sometimes he bolts the arms to the FEL bucket and then can lift it up. The weight just about flattens the front tires. But that's ok because as he points out, the tires only have to hold out until the rims hit the ground....... ....

If you have a solid core roller then there is no deflection on the roll and the contact area is a small line depending on the compression of the earth. The small hand roll I have weight a couple of hundred pounds and is difficult to move around.
The water filled rolls will deform to some extend and therefore the contact point will be much larger(PE>steel). Raising the roller will place nearly equivalent PSI on the back wheel. ....
