I have a 1986 Long 360 that I am trying to replace the emergency brake pad in. Talked to the dealer I bought the brake parts from, but they had never replaced one. Have the differential case split from the trans. , need to know if there is a shortcut to getting the emerg. brake shoe out, the obvious way that I can see being to remove the rear differential cover to access gears and remove? Anyone out there able to help me? Thanks, Walt PS.... Also have a message posted under chat.

The process you are talking about is not unique in the industry to get to parking brakes. your dealer should have the manuals for his reference to work on them or have the info available. ....

Thanks Art, for the reply. You are the only person that has answered my question is any way. I just finished the job tonight though. As to your answer, yes I bought the actual shop manual for the tractor, I thought it would be a good idea to have it before diving into this project. I"ve been an auto mechanic for years, but never got into tearing a tractor apart. I checked with the dealer I was buying the service and parking brake parts from and asked him briefly what was involved. He told me the tractor would have to be split at the trans. and differential cases to get to the emergency brakes. After looking at the shop manual once I got it, it said to remove the final drives from the differential, which I had to do to change the service brakes anyway, then to split the case and remove the safety plate from the pivot pin and extract it from the front of the differential case, allowing the emergency brake shoe to drop from its pivot point on the right side and then to remove the emergency brake unit from the housing. Well, that's where you come to a standstill. The emergency brake is below a gear on the pinion shaft, all of which is housed between to solid walls in the case. The only way to get the pinion shaft out of the gear and be able to lift the gear out from between these walls and extract the brake is to remove the rear of the differential case and extract all the gears and pto, allowing you to pull the pinion shaft back. No one could tell me this at the dealers, they had never done one, and the book gives no reference as to having to do this, but there is no other way, gauranteed. Well, hope this helps anyone out there that ever has the same problem, it's been a good learning experience. Thanks again for your response. Walt ....

Many of the newer tractors use transmission brakes for parking. They are easily over powered by the engine and we have several customers that we have added a seatbelt buzzer or a lite on the dash to remind them that the brake is on. Glad you were successful with your repair. ....
