If you post again and indicate the model tractor, somebody probably will know. In the meantime, there are some discussions in the archives that might help you out with some general information about floats, gauges, constant voltage devices etc.. ....

It looks like I'm going to disappear to our camp for a few days, so I'll get my 2-cents in. I can't help with the specific tractor. If there aren’t any specific comments made here, you might try SSB or Yesterday's Tractors. I don't know how active the IH forums are there but the Ford forums get fair traffic. From a wiring diagram, the gauge on my Ford 1710 has four wires. There is a 12v lead for the lights that also feeds other gauges, a 12 V lead for the level sending unit in the tank, a lead to the lighting switch and a ground bus that's common to other instrumentation, the sending unit etc.. My tank has connectors for two leads at the top. One lead is hot and the other is the ground. Somewhere in all of this is a constant voltage reference device. Mine probably is incorporated in the gauge. My gauge is attached to the wiring harness by a special 4-connector plug. If there is no wiring to your gauge, I'd look for a spare plug somewhere in the vicinity. It might be difficult to figure out the connections without a wiring diagram, but some figuring can be done with a VOM. Ground wires still should show continuity with an ohmmeter, and hot leads still should show battery, of reference voltage with a voltmeter. Sorry I can't provide specific comments. ....
