I am interested in buying a Yanmar Model1601 OD, Model 21 OD or Model F15D. I have done some research with many comments on grey market Yanmars. What does this mean and how do you identify a grey market Yanmar? Is this a good or bad thing? If you have additional information on any of these models please let me know.

To try to help with your answer, they are tractors that are made for use in another country and imported and sold in the states, for example there might be a Yamnar that is shipped to some other country for sales in that country or it might come from Japan for Japananese use,the lettering etc name on the hood might be in Japanese, the specs for the tractor might not meet US standards, the Yamnar would not be sold through a Yamnar dealer, but by someone who deals in grey market tractors instead. My understanding you can get some good buys on some good equipment, but parts could be hard to find. This is just what little bit I know (or think I know)about them. I probably really have you confused now. ....

The Japanese market is geared toward consumerism. Many of the laws were set up after the war to create a home market for goods. For example, you buy a new car in Japan and in 3 yrs you must have a safety inspection. At the safety inspection a number of parts must be replaced to the tune of $3000 twenty years ago. I suspect that it would be at least double now. After the safety the car is good for another 2 yrs. After this time the car must be safetied every year. Most people can not afford this so they buy a new car. In context the average car travels less than 40,000 Km (25,000 miles) in five years. A number of the early Japanese cars were designed only for this mileage, thus the smoking Civic 70's at 50,000 miles. Some were sleeper as they were direct copies of european engines. The cars are left hand drive and were crushed, but the car companies have created a market in third world countries. The 5 year model cycle on Japanese cars relates to this.
How does this relate to compact tractor and equipment? There maybe some regulations, but Japanese farmers replace their tractors not because they are worn out. This is difficult on the averge 3 acres. They replace them to get new. The dealer has no market for old tractors (1200-1500hrs), they probably used to crush them now they export them out of country. The import taxes on used equipment is low. Dealers here buy containers of these tractors, at very low prices and sell them here. Many of the models are similar to the US designed tractors, but they do not have the parts supply and all parts will not be available. There are now some houses specializing in the supply of parts for these grey tractors.
Additionally Japanese manufactures have plants in southeast Asia. Some of these tractors are also making it to the US and maybe new, but not all the parts are common. Some of the early Kiotis (Korea) were identical to the kubotas, my brother in law has one that he can by all the parts at the Kubota dealers.
Maybe too long of an explaination but it is an interesting situation. I wish I could buy some equipment, (track hoe etc.) at the container load price.

I'm a grey market tractor dealer. I import directly from Japan. I'm also an authorized Yanmar dealer and also have developed sources for parts for other Japanese brands. This is my take on the grey market. I sell mostly Yanmars. They are the only company that has their own parts depot in the US. Their parts are cheaper than the other bramds. The availability of parts for US versus grey models is about the same. Availability of parts for grey Yanmar vs US brand compacts of the same age is better for the Yanmar. For example,Grey Yanmar parts are much easier to get than Bolens compact parts. There are parts that are no longer ,but this is true of many tractors of their age. The important thing in buying any tractor is having a knowledgeable parts source. I have all US Yanmar parts books, around 35 grey Yanmar books, & access to most of the others. I also have other brand grey (Mitsubishi/Satoh, Bolens/Iseki, Hinomoto,Shibaura, Kubota)& US part books For more info contact sheaftractor@coiinc.com.

The majority of grey Yanmars are Japanese rice paddy/market garden tractors traded to the dealers in Japan for new tractors. Most come in the container with the rice rototiller on the back. Some have a different hookup on the back than the 3 point hitch.

I am wondering how to interpret the model numbers that you were given. I think for the first one you mean YM1601D. For the second one, I'm not sure what you are referring to. For the last, I think that the F15D is the designation for a newer model Yanmar of about the same size....I'm not personally familiar with that model.
I bring all of this up because when dealing with grey market, the person who you deal with means everything. If the person offering these is not sure what models that he has, then you may want to think about what that means.
In general, the most common grey market Yanmars are the YM series. These letters are followed by 4 digits (grey market) or 3 digits (US models). In all of Yanmar's model designations that I have ever seen, the first two numbers are horsepower as calculated by Yanmar. YM followed by 3 digits is the designation that Yanmar used for their non-grey or US models. There are more resources available for the US models, and they command a higher price. A suffix "D" indicates 4wd. I've never heard of the suffix "OD".
We are starting to see grey market Yanmars newer than the YM series. These are the F, FX, and FF series.
