I have had a pt425 and it has been excellent. It lifts far more than advertised and has excellent design. It is almost imposible to flip.

i too have a 425 for 3/4 of this mowing, mulch and fert. season. this machine according to my not too sophisticated calculation replaced 1.5 menhours. by the end of the season the machine will have paid for itself. this is pased on $10-13.00 per hour cost for a good worker ....

You guys have heard from me before about my PT-425. I took delivery in early Jan. 2001. As of today, this machine has just over 170 hours on it. I have mowed, tilled, moved snow and what must be several hundred tons of dirt and rock. I do not use it commercially, I just had a lot of leftover landscaping from a project at home as well as at my sisters home. I moved hardpacked clay piled up from three years ago. I tilled and removed existing topsoil, put in fill, and replaced the topsoil. I also spread tandem and tri-axle loads of new fill dirt. I cannot say enough about the way this machine performs. It is totally user friendly. My 11 year old daughter and my wife operate it comfortably and confidently. The thing puts me in mind of a badger. Without a doubt the smartest money I have ever spent, bar none, end of story. ....

I am looking at the PT422 and PT425, Any comments of why one is better than the other? Did you pick and choose attachments or did you go with the trailer package? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Paul:
I got the pt425 for a couple of reasons. It came with a roll bar and cover (wich is made of plate steel). More HP. And the pt425 comes with a Kohler motor. I don't know if it is better than a Robin motor or not but I do know nearly every dealer in my area works on kohler, parts can be bought at NAPA and the engine can easily be replaced.
I think you will be happy with either one. They are great machines. I saw a used one on Ebay, it only lasted a couple of days before it was sold.

Good Luck!! Rich Rogers ....

Paul:

While I don't think one is significantly better than the other, I went with the PT422. Both tractors are basically the same, except for the roll bar/canopy and motor.

The roll bar/canopy is available as an option ($500) for the PT422 whereas its included as standard for the PT425. But, the PT422 is $1000 less than the PT425 ($7000 vs $8000), so you'd still be $500 ahead when comparing apples to apples.

So, the only difference is in the motor. I decided to go with the PT422 with the Robin motor. At the time, there was some info on the Kohler website (that I cannot find now) that led me to not like it quite as well. Since I can't find this information to reference it now, I'm not going to say anything further about this subject until I locate it again.

The other issue in comparing the motors is HP and torque. And that is subject to debate. The testing methods used for the specs on the motors may have been different, so a direct comparison may not be possible. There is conflicting information on the Kohler website as to what method of testing was used — one place it lists one ASTM method and in another it lists a different method. So I don't know which is correct.

In any case, it all comes down to what you're comfortable with. If you have a local service that works with Kohler on a regular basis, then that could be a deciding factor (though I would wish no one any trouble with their motor!) I suspect either engine will work fine or PowerTrac wouldn't be using both.

Finally, I picked and chose what implements I wanted. I would have had limited (or no) use for several of the items in the trailer package. Plus, I don't plan on going too far with the tractor where the trailer would provide a big benefit (beyond keeping everything in one place or for easy access for mounting and dismounting the implements).

Good luck in making your decision. Either way, I know you'll be happy.

Thanks for the comments received on the PT422 and PT425. Has anyone used the snowblower on the PT422 or PT425? Does it work well or is the blade better?

I'm interested in the PT-425. I'm a litte concerned with the lift height being only 52". That seems like it will barely clear my pickup bed. Any of you owners had any experience with loading dirt/whatever into pickups? Looks like a great machine. I ordered the video last week. Any owners around Northern Indiana that would be willing to show one off? ....

Paul: The snowblower was not available when I bought my machine. I chose the large 10 cu. ft. bucket over the blade because it was cheaper and I believe more useful than the blade. So far, I have been very content with that decision. ....

Dave: It has been my experience that the 400 series machines are not well suited for loading pick-ups. I guess some might call that a shortcoming but I load my utility trailer and pull it with the PT or a pick-up. If you think you will need to load pick-ups a lot, then maybe you should consider the 1430. Good luck and I really do not think you will be disappointed with a Power-Trac. ....

Bryan, I measured the side of my pickup unloaded on level ground and it is 48" at the highest point(1989 1/2 ton chevy 4x4). Could you do an experiment for us? Dump a bucket over a 4' obstacle and report how much clearance you have. It would be greatly appreciated. ....

Rich:

The stump grinder is a spinning carbide tip blade which grinds wood. I have used it on cherry, oak, maple, pine and locust. It works well but does take time on larger stumps. I usually grind stump 12" in dia or less and about 3 inches below the surface of the soil.
I have also used it to dip shallow, narrow trenches for phone and electric lines.

Subject: PowerTrac

I have received a number of messages regarding information on the PowerTrac tractor. For those interested go to the following home page which gives an excellent review of this tractor from a person who has done all the research.

We have verysandy soil and it works fine. Not beach sand, of course, but the soil types are TYNER A,B,C and D, which is very steep sandy soil. Hope this helps.

Does the Power-Trac lift the mower high enough to clean the deck and change blades? I cannot tell from the pictures if it will lift sufficiently high. I am tired of running my mower on jack stands or removing the deck to clean it. By the way, does the deck do good job mowing grass?

I appreciate your answers.

The lift arms will lift the mower up over 3 feet high. This made it very easy to spray out with the garden hose.

I would not get under it without blocking it up somehow. It is very heavy and could squish you like a bug if someone were to bump the joystick.

To change or sharpen blades, I am probably going to use my forks to tip the mower on its side against a tree and chain it to the tree so that it doesn't tip over. ....
